Your thoughts on a 3" 629
I'm toying with the idea of buying a new 629 with a 3 inch bbl SKU 150715 and would like to hear some pros and cons. Also I can't seem to find a belt holster for one--ones for 4" yes - 3" no
thanks

Love mine. Rides great in a Simply Rugged pancake holster with a good belt.

I love mine. I changed the grips and made my own holster for it.

Factory ammo, 44 mag with 240 grain bullet, can be described as brisk. My 44 magnum ammo are all reloads because I've been fortunate to find range brass. My ammo is in white boxes or red boxes. I don't shoot red box ammo in my short barreled M29 / M629. Made that mistake just once.
I don't have any 44 Spl brass but have a box of CCI aluminum Blazer 44 Special ammo. Recoil is not much more than a mid-range 38 Special in a K-frame. That heavy N-frame absorbs the recoil easily.

You don't mention an intended use so it's hard to get specific.
Generally speaking for any magnum cartridge , the short barrel is going to give up velocity at the expense of muzzle flash. There will be some accuracy long range loss over a longer barreled version (due to sight radius). As for holsters, I'm sure somebody like Lobo leather can make you a nice one at a reasonable cost. That said, I never had an issue carrying a 3" revolver in a 4" holster.
All that said, the heart wants what the heart wants.......

I like 3" J frames,, but if I am gonna tote the weight of an N frame, Id like enough barrel to actually make it worthwhile and shootable

thanks for the input
I should have mentioned I already have a 629 with a 6.5" bbl. I'm thinking the 3" would be easier to carry when I'm hiking or walking/climbing to those out-of-the-way spots for fly fishing. I do reload 44 mag and special--thinking I wouldn't carry factory or full maxed mag loads unless I was in bear country. I like my 6.5" and use it for deer hunting but I'm typically not carrying it any real distances when I hunt.
I really appreciate the info

I just picked up a 629-5 full lug 3" myself. On the chance I may carry it for self-defense, picked up some 180 JHPs in 44 special. Should I carry it in the woods it would most likely be in the summer time. First two chambers w/ snakeshot and the other 4 with 180 JHPs in 44 mag. I may/may not try to work up a 180 JHP 44 mag load specific to the 3" The load I run in my 5" 629 isn't real stout but may be for the 3".

Don't have a 3" N frame, but do have a 2.75" L Frame M69 5 shot .44 mag. Have shot it a fair amount from up close and personal out to 440 yds. I'm not the best shot, so the 440 yd gong wasn't in much jeopardy -- 50 yards and in, it's a different story.
Was at the range yesterday verifying sight settings on some 22s getting. It was windy and hands were getting really cold, so only shot two rounds with the 2.75" M69 with Federal 240gr JHP (No. 44A) at 50 yards rested. Both hit within 2" of my point of aim from a rest.
One of the locals (above average shooter) showed up to chat and I offered up the little .44 and the remaining box of .44 mags to get his impression. First up was a gas cylinder (one of the tall skinny ones) at 300 yds. He was standing upright with his butt resting on one of the bench rest tables. I was watching thru my binoculars. His first shot was about two feet left of the cylinder but dead on elevation wise -- remember this was the first time he ever touched this gun. He shot the next 10 rounds without hitting the cylinder but wasn't missing by much. He moved in to an 8" swinger at 200 yds for the last 4 rounds. Never hit it, but was much closer -- from my vantage point thru the binoculars, he wasn't more than a foot off the plate in any direction -- almost nailed it with the last shot.
Gun is equipped with Hogue 500 X Frame grips and recoil is "stout" according to my friend but certainly doable. I have around 1,200 rounds (too lazy to look up actual count) thru the gun, most of which (90% .44 Mags). I don't find the recoil objectionable and never noticed the muzzle flash (I mostly use A2400 and H110 in my .44 Mag Loads)
Point being, these short barreled magnums can be very useful and tons of fun and aren't limited to short ranges. Yes, you'll give up some ballistic advantage to longer barrels (and sight radius), but I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot at an elk within 50 yds. FWIW, I've chronoed some 315gr and 325gr Cast FN GCs right at 1,100 fps. My preferred load is an LBT 260gr WFNGC at a bit over 1,100 fps which also happens to be the guns favorite load.
50 yard target rested on my range bag (verified on a differnt day).
Here's a picture with a set of Hogues 500s that I modified a bit.

If you don't put Hogue or Pachmayr stocks on one of those and you fire full house .44 Magnum rounds you'll be sorry. I was very happy to trade it to a friend in lieu of a $900 poker debt and, trust me, he keeps the Pachmayrs on there and only loads it with .44 Specials. It's delicious with .44 Specials. Madmen shoot those with .44 Magnum loads. IMHO
Okay, the reports above do say Hogue and it can be handled but I don't see it as a whole lot of fun, regardless, but, as always, YMMV!!!

Buy it
and don't look back. Believe it or not I carry a 625-7 in 45 colt for trail walks. No problem conceal carrying in a pancake holster. If you do not like it, a 3" n frame will always sell.

I'll throw in a situation that happened recently. I am in an LGS and 2 smiths are on the counter. A mint nearly unfired 629-6 3" deluxe and a scratched up, carry worthy 640-1. Being the lock snob I am I'm paying 99% of my attention to the 640 while my brother is looking over the 629. This 629 is a seriously nice gun, whoever did the polishing was spot on that day. I already have over twice as many N frames as J frames so I buy the 640 and my brother buys the 629. We get home, shoot a few shots in the yard and I'm able to nearly stack the shots single action at 10 yds. It shoots amazing and a perfect point of aim. The weight of the N frame made shooting even full house 44 mags a breeze. The shortest barrel length I have is 5" and I wasn't sure how the 3" would handle. Needless to say I seriously want one now. It doesn't help that since his gun was used it was about $250 off MSRP. I'm not sure I made the right choice that day.

I do not enjoy shooting full powered 44 Magnum ammo in my 3" 44. It can be done though, and would not be a problem if a few shots had to be made for any number of reasons.
Mostly though, I shoot loads approximating 44 Special +P, in either 44 Special or Magnum brass, in this gun and the other 44's I own. I only shoot handloads and home cast bullets in my 44's except for a box of Speer 200 grain Gold dot ammo I bought about 10 years ago for some reason.

I have the exact gun you are describing. I love it.
I carry it everyday as my CCW. I use a Don Hume H715 and carry it AIWB. The N frame is heavy enough that OWB really pulls your belt and feels heavy. AIWB isn't bad at all, especially if I could lose pound or two.
Because I refuse to put giant rubber grips on a CCW, I only shoot .44 SPL or light magnums thru it and save the full house magnums for my 6.5" 629 with stock rubber grips. I carry it with Underwood .44 SPL 200gr Gold Dot JHPs.
That said, I don't shoot the Deluxe as well as my 4" M29. Not sure why. I just seem to shoot the M29 straighter for some reason. However, for me 3" is the perfect barrel length for AIWB carry, so I'm just going to practice more.

If you get a 629 you will love it. I got one several years ago and it is my "glades carry gun when I go hog hunting. I have used full power 240gn factory loads and 240gn lead SWC that I load to 1000fps and they both shoot to the same POI at 25yds. I know I lose some MV in the 3'bbl but nothing has asked to be shot twice with those 240gn loads. I don't find the recoil to be excessive either. Get one, you'll love it.

Even the 629 Deluxe is hard to find. I'm not sure if they are about sold out or what, but I finally managed to find one for a decent price on gunbroker after the usual suspects were all sold out.
EDIT: Grabagun has the 629 Deluxe back in stock for the best price I've seen: ACT NOW!

Have a 3 inch 629 with the factory wood combats on it. Love to shoot it with 44 special ammunition. Not so much with 44 magnum ammunition.

Bell Charter Oak does seem to make nice holsters, and now I'm thinking I need to get another 629 Deluxe and one of these to hold the pair:
Of course, I'm joking. Two N frames might get a bit heavy. Although now that I think about it, maybe...

ACTUALLY, I SOMETIMES CARRIED MY 8 3/8", AND MY 3" M629s SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE BIG BOY WOULD BE IN A SHOULDER HOLSTER, AND THE SNUBBY, IN A CROSS DRAW BELT HOLSTER, ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE....

That's awesome! I've got a 6" (with shoulder holster) and 3" M629, maybe I should carry both sometimes just so I can say I did.

DEFINITELY TRY IT, dr. mordo......
I PREDICT THAT YOU WILL FIND IT QUITE COMFORTABLE. THE WEAPONS' WEIGHTS WILL COUNTER BALANCE EACH OTHER, PRETTY WELL......
ONE KEY IS TO WEAR A TOP QUALITY GUNBELT, TO CARRY THE SNUBBY. IF YOUR SHOULDER RIG HAS A STRAP THAT CONNECTS IT TO YOUR BELT, ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF YOUR BODY, YOU COULD NOT DO ANY BETTER THAN THAT ! ! !

I am a fan of the 629 and the 44 mag-own several, and have shot them extensively-load my own specifically for each gun, but I am not a fan of the recoil of the shorter barreled guns-not at all, to say nothing of the report when fired.

I got my 3" 629 about 6 months ago for the same purposes you intend to use it for. It's my dedicated "Woods-Gun" for sure as it replaced a 4" 625 in .45ACP/Super... It's pretty great in a DeSantis OWB holster... A Beltman Bullhide leather belt with an internal stiffener makes carrying this rig very nice and I almost forget I'm wearing it at times. For street I carry the Blazer Brass Aluminum cased Gold Dots in .44Special. For woods it's 300 grain SJFP from Prvi Partizan... Muzzle flash with both loads is minimal probably due to flash retardant powders. The recoil is more than manageable with Full-House loads. It's just a solid revolver that pulls double duty, CCW and Woods-Carry... I did delete the Hillary Hole last night with a Lock Delete from Original Precision... To me it really completes the rig. The balance in the hand is superb and after 500 rounds the trigger has honed itself to a buttery smooth state. This is my favorite wheel gun... and I have a few nice Vintage and minty 70's Revolvers so that says a lot in my opinion.

I love my 3” 629s. I carry them in either a Galco Combat Master or shoulder rig. They weigh about the same as a 1911.

Oh that is a beautiful revolver/holster rig you have there! Would you be so kind as to "PM" me what stocks those are? They look comfortable while still retaining a combat profile. I bet they disperse/soak up the recoil... Thanks in Advance CH4!

^^^ I agree those grips look nice, but they are downright painful when shooting full-powered .44 Magnum ammo.
Here is my Model 24 with those grips. They are fine in .44 Special...

A 44 magnum with a barrel shorter than 5" would have too much muzzle blast for me. My 44 magnums have 6.5" and 7.5" barrels. The 44 special option is there, but to me you have an overweight 44 special.
For 44 special carry, I have a 4" Charter Arms and a pair of 3" Taurus 431s.
That's my opinion. The important thing is, make yourself happy.

THAT IS THE IMPORTANT THING, Tex1001, WE ALL NEED TO MAKE OURSELVES HAPPY......
YEARS AGO, THROUGH ERRORS IN JUDGEMENT, I SUCCUMBED TO LOW PRICES, AND ATTRACTIVE COSMETICS, AND PURCHASED 3 NEW TAURUS REVOLVERS. A YEAR LATER, I SOLD THEM ALL, FOR LESS THAN 1/2 OF WHAT I PAID FOR THEM.......
I WAS MUCH RELIEVED TO BE RID OF THEM, AND THAT'S HOW I MADE MYSELF HAPPY.........

I've had the 3" 629 Deluxe on my short list for years, almost went with the new snubby 69, but I just snagged the 629 off Buds for $685, couldn't pass it up at that price.

The shoulder rig is a Galco Miami Classic and the stocks are factory Combats. Although the stocks are pretty meaty, recoil is brutal with anything stronger than .44 Specials. YMMV

I have two Model 29 snubbies, one ported, one not. They are a LOT of fun to shoot, especially at an indoor range right next to somebody you don't like. Enjoy.

I've owned so many 3" barrels I almost feel bad...OK maybe not.
I have a permit (CCL/CCW) and routinely carry a 629 3" Lew Horton. I am fortunate to have a few of these...
It is a great gun and with practice magnum loads are doable. I should note I am a bigger fella with a strong grip. I wouldn't think this is something for a 'green horn' to pick up and run with successfully. As far as skill level, you should be a bit 'long in the tooth'.
Now, I am looking for a 3" Lew Horton 29 with combat grips for a safe queen. I liked the blued a lot but the stainless is great for days on the farm.

The 3" 629-4 Backpacker is a fine shooting revolver from 7yds out to 15yds that I normally shoot indoors with reduced loads in 44mag cases but a bit hard to locate for those looking for one.

I have a 3" PC 629 which is double Magnaported and now carries beautiful Fishpaw checkered wooden grips which do not cover the backstrap but are a tad thicker than Pachmayr Compac Pros, which they more or less copy. These are the best grips for this gun, better than Hogue or Pachmayr, even.
My DeSantis pancake for 3" N frame has been my holster for this gun, although I am sure that O'Rourke would build you one at least as good if DeSantis is no longer doing that. Lobo Gun Leather is another source that I can recommend from personal experience.
In my recent experience (I am now 73), I don't really like .44 Magnum recoil as much as I do heavy .44 Special, meaning "Buy your .44 Mag ammo in 20-rd boxes."

My thought (that is what you asked for, right?) is that the .44 Magnum is wasted power in a 3" barrel. Even .44 Spl. is hobbled in a bbl. that short, but sometimes concealability is the determinant, more so than ballistic performance. When I CCW, it's usually a .38, and I'm a big guy, but I'm confident in my marksmanship (gulp). Just sayin'.

I respect your opinion... And I'm a marksman too... But would you feel comfortable carrying your .38Special... CCW style for your "Woods-Gun?"
ETA: I'm a huge Vintage and Current Production "J" frame/M36 fan myself. I often carry one and sometimes two on an occasion or three for Street Carry... But in the woods a 3" M629 with a warm and fuzzy Full-House Mag that you are proficient with is way more capable than anything lesser when concealability is/can be an issue... I'm a fly under the radar kind of guy because I'm a big ol' boy too and get enough looks being a large built man... We have a family mountain home that nestles up to the Nantahala National Forest where we Kayak, Fish, Hike, etc... It's pretty yuppie (not my style), and the very thought of any kind of gun amidst these "Liberal Types" would result in multiple calls, cell phone pics, and videos of us to the local Sheriff's office if I were spotted... So the 3" 629 makes sense. And yes, we have an all too comfortable black bear(s) that use our house as it's own cedar plank scratching post as well as urinates upon my 15' Rubicon to show their presence etc... I love .38Special LSWCHP's for around town use though my friend!

I just picked up a new 629 Deluxe 3” this week and I love it. I had been without a 44mag long enough.

Those are Ahrends retro-combats, round to square butt conversions. Oil finished Cordia wood. The grips are very nice, although I would have preferred them just a little beefier (wider/thicker). Still, no complaints.

What is the difference between the "Deluxe" and the regular 629?

Awesome choice! .44Special in 200 grain flavor Gold Dot's are your friend for "Around Town" carry if you so desire to CCW it... I carry mine in an OWB holster with a Beltman Belt 50% of the time with Bianchi speed strips more and more these days. For Woods Loads Fiocchi, PRVI Partizan, and PMC have some great loads available in 300 grain flavors... Buffalo Bore has some quality loads too with hard cast offerings as well... I bought 5 different makes/manufacturers of both each in.44Special and .44Magnum to find my favorite preference load in each of the respective caliber/loads. I have to say that CCI/Speer, Fiocchi, PMC, Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Winchester, S&B, Hornady & Remington have all been great... none have disappointed. Just stay away from "Ultramax" is all I'm sayin'... It's up to you to find your revolver's favorite loading in .44Special/Magnum. YMMV...

I believe in a 3" 629 so much that back in the day I kept missing the LH offerings, so I had the guys that made the 3" LH for S&W make one for me.
It's my constant companion in the woods.
It's Mag-Na-Ported and I have grips on it that fit my hand right, so I can lob 265g cast out of it all day long with 22g of W296 behind it.

See what you have done-- Now I am going to have to buy the 629 3" for 675$ is saw at the show last week. 95%+, great trigger, but has the internal lock. I saw HamHands gun with repair and it looks nice. I thought I would last longer!! Be Safe,

^^^ I doubt that you will ever find another one at that price.
Don't worry about the lock. Much consternation over nothing.
