Default Picked up my new 3", 686-6 today!

I got my new 686-6, 3" put on my permit today. It is all clean and ready for a trial this weekend if the weather man is wrong!
Not worried about my Smith melting in the rain, but I might.
I really like the feel of it, I know I am going to like it!

Any new gun I get doesn't make it home before I run a few through it. But I live in the middle of a National Forest.

I understood everything else, and it sounds great.

In NYS a person has to have a valid pistol permit to even handle a pistol. I purchased the gun, then take the invoice from the dealer to the county pistol permit office and have it added to my NYS permit. Take a coupon back to the dealer to prove it was added. Then and only then can I take possession of the pistol.
Just like in any communist county or state!

Default Congratulations on an exceptional selection

I love 3" 686s. Have a couple my self. Best balance of anything I own. My fluted cylinder 686+ is my favorite . Even ahead of my vintage 77 6" Colt Python

The 686 has many fans here.

I like the fact you can find all sorts of grips for the K/L frames and so get what you want. I used VZ G-10 grips with "tactical diamonds" for a solid grip; but occasionally put the S&W factory rubber grips on when I know I am going to shoot a lot of .357 Mag ammo (I usually shoot .38 Special handloads, mild or middle of the road).

Congrats, and enjoy!

Never mind - I found the answer in a earlier post.

Here in Utah I can carry anything with my CWP.

Didn't know anyone had to list the weapon that they carried.

An update on the 686 at the range yesterday. I set up to shoot it on the bench for an accuracy test. It was hitting 5" to the left at 15 yards, not very pleased! A fellow shooter I know was there and shot it, had the same results. He brought the front sight blade to my attention, it appears to be canted.
I adjusted the rear sight until I was hitting in the vicinity of my point of aim. The rear sight is almost all the way to the right, not pleased again!
I will be calling customer service tomorrow(Monday)
I am very disappointed to say the least!

You're going to absolutely love your new 686, and as much as I don't care for the lock and MIM parts, it is the finest current production revolver out there. I love mine. S&W 686 3" 1'st Shots - YouTube

Smith and Wesson seems to be having a lot of trouble clocking their barrels and properly machining their forcing cones lately. lately. I recently bought one of their .22's that has BOTH problems.

Default Isn't it odd......

Isn't it odd that a premier revolver manufacturer can't screw a barrel on straight?

I've heard of too many 'over clocked' barrels, which is easily spotted. Then there is the issue that +/- five degrees (I believe is the right tolderance) is 'in spec'. Neither of these are disasterous if they are willing to fix it.

Also, small index marks would be a big help rather than a guy with a wrench 'eyeballing' the clocking.

Most of the problems I've heard about seem to fall into the above category. But how often is the hole for the barrel in the body of the pistol misaligned, which leaves the barrel pointed in a direction other than 'straight ahead'? In verbal descriptions of misaligned barrels I never could tell exactly which category the problem was in.

Does anybody have a feel for this?

I was looking at a 3" 686-2 Plus Talo (7 shot) the other day. Near perfect shape - at least a 95% gun.
Asking price was $609 plus tax - which would come out to about $665.
Was I a fool for walking out without putting it on layaway?

Not necessarily. If you didn't really want it, you saved yourself a lot of money. On the other hand, that's a great price on a 3" pre-lock 686 in excellent condition. Someone is going to leave that store with a lighter wallet but very happy soon...

Congratulations on a fine firearm sir, it should serve you well.

I've a 686 Plus-5 3 inch unfluted that I love. I need to shoot it more...

IMHO that's a good price for a 3 inch gun.

Just my opinion, worth exactly what you paid for it.
