Default 29-5 Silhouette

This one has been on my wish list for quite some time now. I was holding out waiting for "the one". I wanted at the least a dash 4 model and lo and behold came upon this dash 5 model.
And it couldn't have come along at a better time. This is officially my "b'day/retirement" gun! I hung up the tin snips & hammer after 32 years in the trade. So now you can call me "The Retired Tin Knocker".
I don't think I could've found a nicer gun to celebrate, 'specially considering my fondness of 44 mags. As two of my shooting buddies (translate: enablers) informed me after the pool table thread Rack 'em Up Again 44 Mag Style I indeed needed one more barrel length to complete the collection.
The gun came with Pach grips but fortunately no freckling underneath or anywhere else for that matter. The blue finish is perfect, not a scratch. I replaced the Pachs with a beautiful set of Black Walnut grips I bought from chris872 on eBay. This guy does amazing work. Check him out.
Alright, enough typing, here's a few pics. Thanks as always for letting me share.
Mark

75vette has the coolest stuff!!!

But I'm kind of partial to long barreled 44mags.

Congrats on the retirement! Something about that gun does not look right-not dirty and laying near a pile of fresh empties.

I have it's near-twin in a 29-3. I had an unfluted cylinder fitted and I installed a scope using a sideplate mount that still allows me to use the open sights. It wears a Leupold VX-IV.

Very nice! I would like to shoot silhouettes with that one. The new grip panels will be comfortable to shoot magnums with the wide wood at the top of the frame. Congrats on a very nice gun.

That'll come soon! I need to get to a local outdoor range & play with the front sights. I got a few pointers from forum member jaymoore, the mad scientist at our IHMSA meet Saturday on sighting it in. I popped off a few at 25yds at my indoor range last week and it was about a foot high but produced some tight groups.

A truly stunning gun!! l actually got to see and TOUCH it this past Saturday

in Gainesville Ga.. The bluing and grips are near perfect on it.. SAD Tto

see the factory has discontinued these and many other long barrel models..

Retirement will give the owner/shooter opportunity and extra time to score a magic ''42'':-)

Not too sad to get outbid on this one, as I know it went to a good home!

Low round count revolver now, pretty sure that's fixin' to change.

Also noteworthy: 75Vette did something for the second time that I never was able to achieve- a 20 in Field Pistol using cast bullets out of a .44! He was the Chicken smacking King of the day.

That one is a real beauty man! I didn't know they made the silhouette models in the -5 revision. They must be pretty scarce, as all I've ever seen on GB is the -3 guns.

Thanks Mudd, apparently the dash 5 was the last of the silhouettes with all the good engineering changes. It's listed in the SCSW 4 but with the wrong pic.

I know I’m looking forward to a range report. Also like to hear about the difference compared to an 8 3/8” barrel

I hope to get the gun to an outdoor range very soon Cory. I shot 24 rounds through it with the new grips and it was very manageable. I imagine full blown bear loads would sting but I'm not into pain anymore! The longer barrel does throw the sight on out there. I think I'm gonna have fun with this one!!

I found out about him through the forum. The quality & fit were dead on. He makes sq butt or conversions, checkered or smooth.

Default Silhouette!

Thank you sir! 75vette just shared some info on his -5 gun! I have been looking for one of those for a long time! Here are a couple pieces of eye candy for others to enjoy.

The one on the left is a 29-3 "N" serial prefix in a period correct presentation case and the one on the right is a 29-3 "ABC" in it's period correct presentation case. The one in the middle is a WELL used shooter that has shot a lot of deer(but NO Metallic Silhouettes). And last is my holly grail gun! Thanks to the silver back gorilla! ! !

Beautiful 29 silhouette! If it shoots as half as good as it looks you have a winner. Enjoy your retirement in good health.

Joe, I was glad to share that info with you to add to your data base. I do remember a post from a couple of years ago when you shared the pic of one of four model 57s that you own. That is a beauty to behold!! Did S&W still make the presentation cases for the 29-5s??

In my picture, the case on the left is the type case shipped with guns from 1979-1983 and could be bought as an after market item from the factory until 1985. The case on the right was introduced in 1985 and sold as an aftermarket item only. I don't know when the factory changed the type of case again. So the case from your 29-5 gun would be the one on the right. Your 29-5 was probably shipped sometime in 1991!

Hey Richcory, The papers I received when I bought the gun had more information that a factory letter. The factory made 4 of the 41 mag Silhouettes; I have one, another SWCA member has one, one was bought by Hank Williams Jr(and cut to 7 1/2") , but the 4 th gun is still out there!
Good luck boys!
