This Model 617

This is a nice little gem that Smith didn't go overboard on producing large quantities.
The number for this configuration is either 15 or 23 total.

Anyway, let us see your images of this particular iteration of the S&W Model 617 no dash.

This is the only model S&W that I have seen with the satin finish on the stocks. I like it.

Yes, it does have the aluminum cylinder.

Great and scarce gun you have there! That's a much better configuration to me than the full lug barrel. I would prefer the stainless cylinder over aluminum. With 10 chambers and flutes instead of 6, the weight is already reduced without aluminum and its problems. My $.02

The bottom gun looks like the 10-shot round butt no-lug M617-1 product code 103595. Sources say 17 shipped in August of 1998. Known serial number prefixes include CCM. Shipped in that white cardboard box with the eagle logo on it.

Top gun looks like a duplicate pic of the 103597 you already posted.

One of the reason I like to use product codes is ten years from now someone looking for information on these guns, can just type the product code and the words "Smith and Wesson" into Google and it will take them directly to this thread. Saves them from sorting through 10,000 threads on standard M617's. It makes the thread far more powerful to search engines.

Here’s both RB and SB...


Froggie, the Ashland models were 6 holers and came as (2) 6" and (1) 4".
One of the 6" had 3 T's. (see below)
The Ashlands are somewhat scarce in that there were only a few hundred (hafta look it up for exact numbers) of each of the 3 models.
As you know, the 10-shot alloy were even more scarce with 23 SB and 17 RB.

I've always wondered why they just didn't make the 617 with the same barrel contour as the Model 18. I've got a 617-4 and it is just wayyyy too heavy with that underlug barrel. Only beef I have about the gun. WOuld love to have a barrel with the Model 18 taper on it.

Yes sir on all accounts. The one missing is the Ashland 6" Standard (non-target hammer/trigger). Off hand I don't recall the product code or amount produced. I think that one and the 4 others I've pictured are about the extent of no lock, no lug, 617's produced. Other than maybe for export only but I'm not sure about that. Any info; number produced, product codes, etc. is appreciated.
