recently acquired 686 .357 Mag
This is a new to me S&W 686. I'm sure you already know what it is.
Doing some reading its referred to as a 5" 1/2 Lug.
What is a half lug??
Any idea when they were produced?
I'm new at this so thank you.

Nice! Nearly all 686 revolvers have a full length lug under the barrel. I believe that is a unique and desirable gun. Is is a 686-5?
Actually, I see the keys in your picture, so it must be a 686-6. Others will probably have some info for you. Nice gun.

Thank you very much for the info. Now I know what a 1/2 lug is and what the 6 stands for.
I think its a beautiful handgun and I'm look forward to shooting it.

One more possibly dumb question.
Why do soo many pictures of hand guns have a piece of wood or something in the trigger??
Is it to prop them up for the picture?

It’s part of a diligence to safe handling protocol. Especially if & when photographing.

If you're asking when your's was made there'll be a date on the box's label, assuming it's for your gun, & also on the fired case envelope if it was made before they stopped doing that.

Thank you.
I assumed the fired casing wasn't with the gun in the case but is was behind the foam along with some papers and brochures. The envelope is still taped shut.
The gun has been fired a lot and I'm guessing that my brother possibly carried it as his service revolver before he started carrying a Colt 1911.
It looks like 11/12/03
thanks again

Nice acquisition, my unscientific survey puts the 686 as the most popular revolver on this site.

We could guess, but it would be a lot easier if you told us. On the box label there's a 6-digit number called the product code. It likely begins with "16". That's the unique identifier for that particular variation.
So..... what is that number?

Sorry, I wasn't aware of that. The product number is 164284.
Thank you

164284 was a limited issue "Stocking Dealer Exclusive". These were special guns reserved for those S&W distributors that met certain contractual provisions. I've never seen a number published, but if I had to guess I'd say fewer than 400 were made.
In some respects it reminds me of the Mountain Gun concept. Except the 164284 has a heavier barrel profile. It's not super rare or astronomically valuable, but to a buyer that knows what it is, it probably carries a 10-20% premium over an otherwise identical Model 686-6.

[QUOTE=Kernel Crittenden,
Dear Kernel, you seem to know so much about dates and manufacturing data. I know some of the gun, but if you have more that would be helpful. Can you help me with this gun?
Thanks. - Hutch

Thank you soo much for the info.
I really had no idea what it was specifically when I got it other than it was a .357 mag and I liked it.
I'll keep it for sure. I'm going to put a few rounds thru it this weekend.

That's it. People use shotgun shells and about anything to 'prop' up their guns for photos. What's cool is that gun manufacturers make them with their own logo so it looks a LOT more official than dowels and stuff.

Well, you 'lucked out' and picked one of the finest .357s made. Its competition, the Colt Python, was a good bit more expensive and a lot of us like the 686 more anyway.

1. I can comment, but before we get started.... do you have the box? (I'm guessing "no", but have to ask).
2. You should ask the question in a new thread. More members will see it, and possibly chime in, and it's more appropriate than hijacking this one with such a dissimilar topic.

Yes you lucked out.
The 5” barrel is sought after by some. Not rare but limited. Took me a while to find one. The sights, and Ahrends grips are special. Cocobolo not available anymore. 7 shots doesn’t hurt.
