Default All stainless rear sight, but for what model?

Hi all,
This rear sight is all stainless and looks like the S&W factory sight on my Model 66 except it is about 1/4" shorter than the Model 66 3" +/- rear sight. Any ideas as to what revolver this sight would fit. Maybe this is for one of the older .38 Special stainless revolvers? (The sight leaf is not broken, it's just angle of the photo).

It is either from an early model 67 (.38 Special), or a model 66 - not sure if the sight leaf length between the two are different.

If I am not mistaken:

This sight leaf is likely from an early Model 66 or 67 with 4" barrel.

The sight leaf on the 2-1/2" and 3" guns was longer than the 4" and 6" variants, leading all the way to the edge of the barrel.

The sight leaf on the 4" and 6" guns stopped about a 1/4" shy of the barrel.

Thanks for the info. The revolver I measured is a 66-2 with a 2 1/2" barrel. I'll check the length of my very early 66 4" when I get back in town and see what that reveals.

There were two lengths of rear sights on earlier K-frames. The first design had the mounting hole aligned closely with the barrel-cylinder gap and the FBI requested it be moved when they inspected a pre-production sample of the run of guns they ordered so the hole was moved back toward the rear of the frame somewhat.

Just for the heck of it I pulled out my model 67 no dash, 4", with a parkerized rear sight and it's 2.75" long like the one in your photo.

And, just like rbmac52 said the front edge of my sight is about 1/4" back from the barrel/frame joint. As AverageEd said, the screw that fastens the leaf down to the frame is located right above the forcing cone.

Good information; you learn something new everyday.
