Default 624 3" questions

**Got an email back from Earl Minot-mine didn’t ship from LH, no biggie, should be from 1986.**
***Still hoping to get feedback on that ms screw and if the .146 sight blade is proper, thanks.***

I just made a killer deal on a lightly used 3" 624 no dash (ALW prefix so I'm going to assume it came from Lew Horton), sending off an email to Mr. Earl just for giggles. The gun came without grips. I have a set of Pachmayr Compacs for a K frame, they don't fit at the top of grip frame. I laid a set of K round service grips on it and they lined up perfectly except at the top of the frame-which I expected. Do I need the N compacs?

Also the mainspring screw extends just the slightest out the front of the frame as in the photo below (yes, it's completely seated). Is this normal? I looked on Numrich's site and the only mainspring screws they show are for square butt frames-is there really a difference, or I'm concerned over nothing?

Also this has a plain black rear sight leaf-assuming the white outline got changed out sometime in it's journey through numerous owners. I have a spare new in the package .146 white outline-is that the correct size for gun?

Thanks in advance for the help. I'll put up a pic of the gun after I clean it up tonight.

Bueller, Bueller, Bueller.....
Well anyway here it is all cleaned up minus grips. Have a set of N Pachmayr Compacs on the way courtesy of a good friend in Tucson.

You need N-Frame grips.

Specifically Round Butt grips or round to square conversion grips.

I would just stick with around Butt grips.

The reason you got a killer deal on it and it doesn't have the grips is because the grips that came on it were Finger groove Combat grips and they were sold separately for good money.

Thanks, my friend is sending me a set of the rubber ones that are N. Yeah, I had a 3" 24-3 that came not only with the correct combat grips but original box and papers.

This 624 was a bit neglected but at least mechanically it's quite sound-doesn't appear to have been fired much, plus it came to local friend in a trade so those things helped quite a bit on the price.

This was my 24:

I still have mine. It is a Lew Horton gun, but that means absolutely nothing.

Also shown is my Model 629 with similar grips. They are no fun on the magnum with full powered loads.

Yes, whether it shipped from Horton or one of the other distributors really isn't a concern, more of a curiosity for me. Does anyone have thoughts on that mainspring screw? Also under further inspection in better light and a magnifying glass the rear sight did have the white outline but it's been blackened over. I'm really looking forward to getting grips on it-the shops in my area are woefully inadequate when it comes to revolver accessories outside of HKS speedloaders.

Wink

OP, nice gun. Great for CC. I had a shooter grade one I carried (have permit); and really liked the .44 special round for self defense.

Relative to the Lew Horton provenance, to me, I find it appealing because I consider the factors that went into the development. S&W was not producing a standard offering with the 3" barrel N frames to my recollection (hence, Jovino); while there were some made, Lew Horton made it more available, if you will, to the market. To me, I find this an interesting stop on the journey and talking point. Others feel differently. Check out current and closed auctions to gauge market interest.

I pulled the grips off of my 3” 624 and looks like your gun is perfectly normal....or both of ours are screwed up! 624 3" questions

I guess I am little slow tonight!! It just dawned on me that I have several new strain screws for round butt N frames, and the new ones have a much thinner head on them than all the old screws did. So these new screw heads seat below the grip frame on my older guns. That must have been the solution to the proud screw head that you have.
