I would have stopped that rep. and asked about warranty..and raised a stink if they kept on with saying they will charge me.

A 642 isn’t worth sinking $300 into for repairs.
I suspect Smith will honor the warranty an make it right.

Did you send in the warranty card when you bought the pistol. According to their website there is a lifetime warranty but only if the card was mailed in. There was another member here who had an issue with a broken hammer stud (pin?) and they told him he would have to pay for repairs because it was "user caused". However, they ended up fixing it for free. RPG is right about paying for the repair. Considering a new one can be had for less than $400 that puts a $300 repair right at the tipping point.

Mine broke, but during the first year that I owned it. I sent it back and they swapped parts to a new frame for the repair. Free, with free shipping included. I stopped shooting it so much and mostly just carry and shoot maybe once per year.

It happened to me a couple of years ago. S&W replaced it with a new 642-1 for free, free shipping both ways, and they reimbursed the NICS fee since it had to go through a FFL. All under warranty. The broken gun was purchased new in 2011, so it was about 4.5 years old at the time, IIRC.
