Default Let’s get this straight for once. New smiths

Ok if we don’t see it offered by s&w anymore at there sight it means it’s not discontinued it’s just on the back burner and not being manufactured or offered right now? But they could return to be offered again at anytime s&w wants to do a run of them.
There not gone forever right?

Example,

M58
M28
M27
M25
M24

Having zero knowledge of S&W but being involved with other complex assembly product manufacturing. My guess is reality works this way...

The Boom Revolver company makes guns in .22, .32, .38, .41, .44 and .46 calibers. It has one MIM machine which makes frames in 3 sizes using 3 molds and 6 cylinders in 6 calibers using 6 molds.

It cold forges 30 different barrels (6 calibers in 5 lenths) on one forge using 30 different mandrels.

So this 'cycle' the boss decides to make 100 .32s and 1000 .22s and 50 .46s based on sales. He has just those two machines to make parts for those models. So no medium frames are made until later, how much later, well if demand for small and or large frame revolvers goes up, it might be a while.

But unless the molds need to be retooled, eventually everything gets manufactured, albeit in smaller limited runs. For smaller concerns deciding when to make the switch can be difficult because every change decreases production and incurs fixed labor costs which must be spread over a production run be it 10 or 10,000 units.

While my post here that I'd buy two Boom .46s is not likely to be answered, Jason at Lipsey’s takes wishes by e-mail and if he gets enough interest in a revolver he might talk to S&W. However, Lipsey’s specials have not included S&Ws since the Obama years when gun manufacturers did not have to scrounge for business. Currently all gun manufacturers are struggling to stay afloat, so it is safe to say that using modern parts S&W would reintroduce anything on your list if a distributor or government agency placed a large enough order.

My speculation is that the obsolescence of service grade revolvers makes the 58 and 28 the two revolvers on your list the least likely to be reintroduced.

Although Smith COULD produce any of the models listed, they would be the next dash iteration of the respective model so that they would only resemble the original models.

As an example, for many of us older folks a proper M27 has no MIM parts, has a one piece barrel, doesn’t have a lock and doesn’t have a frame mounted firing pin. I suspect any NEW M 27 would have all these ‘improvements’ and probably others.

Smith & Wesson will make anything they have parts for, and if enough interest will mfg some new parts. The Model 431PD was listed as "Discontinued in 2005", but when I obtained one new from a major on line dealer, I was informed the ship date was April 2016. Roy mentioned a batch were assembled from parts on hand. Of course the frame itself is used in several different models of different caliber.

The selections at their Web sight are plenty and seem to change frequently, so you're probably right on that account. The M27 and M25 are still offered as "Classics". They're prone to favor stainless steel over carbon steel though. I'm guessing they'll never come back from that.

There are a couple of not so minor details not to be overlooked----and they don't have anything to do with stainless steel or carbon steel----just philosophy and orientation. I'm inclined to lump them together, but we'll look at both.

There are two philosophies extant among the world's manufacturers. One is we will be successful if we make the best possible product for the price. The other is we will be successful if we make our product at the lowest possible cost. You can decide which philosophy applies to which manufacturer---and at what point in time---because they change with different regimes.

Along with philosophy there is the matter of orientation: We will be customer oriented---or we will be self oriented. Again, you can decide which applies to which manufacturer---and at what point in time.

See how simple this is-----and that's exactly how simple it is. There is usually a lot of smoke you have to see through, but keep in mind it's just smoke. So when Monster Motor Company falls upon hard times, and gets bailed out by a government using its citizens' money, or when Big Airplane Company gets snarfed up by little airplane company, the reason for either/both boils down to a combination of philosophy and orientation----and to the effect of that combination on the marketplace---and its effect on ALL companies.

That's us---we are the marketplace. If/when we get to liking or disliking one company or another, either good times or bad times follow rather quickly. That's because we've seen through the smoke---and either liked or disliked what we saw----and voted accordingly. We vote with our dollars. We vote for stuff we like made by folks we like. Often times the other stuff is made by folks who are so self centered they believe we don't know beans from apple butter about anything. Sometimes it takes a while, but there's truth in that old say about chickens coming home to roost.

All this was simpler in the good old days. Actually it wasn't simpler-----just more responsive/faster acting. That was when there weren't so many of them---and there weren't so many of us---but the marketplace is in charge---sooner or later.

And of course there are companies who are one way, and act another way---try to be all things to all people---and that'll work---for a while. It's like someone said up there----something about a whole ton of PC wheelguns.

The model 66 made a comeback ! They realized there was a demand for a K framed 38/357 ...demand = sales and sales = profit . Wish I had one .

I would love to see the prices of the Third Generation models if brought back only for a short time!! Am guessing a Tactical or CS-9 would be over a grand easy!
