Default Model 19-5

Hello all! I want to start by thanking everyone for advice received on my question/topic.
I picked up a 19-5 from a friend for $200. It has a fair amount of wear on the blueing however the wood grips are in pretty good shape.
It shoots like a million bucks. All of the workings are 100%.
I've seen that Smith has a reblueing service for $220 on their website. Would I be killing any future value by having this done? And I intend on shooting it. However I wish it looked a bit better.

Am I wasting time and $ wanting to have it reblued?

Thanks again!
Todd

Not if you have $200 into it and there is no rust.

No rust. Looks mostly like holster wear.

It's a personal decision, really. If the finish on it now bothers you, then have it re-finished. When you consider what you paid for the gun, and the cost to refinish, you will have about what you could sell it for into it, maybe a little less. Collectors pay top prices for guns with original finish, and a good one at that, so if you refinish it, or leave it with the original worn finish, it about an even wash, either way. Any way you slice it, $200 for a finish worn but tight model 19 is a steal.

In my opinion it almost always deminishes the value of a firearm when it is refinished or reblued. Monetary value is always decreased. Did you buy it for resale or did buy it to use? I personally like firearms that tell a story, that show honest wear. A reblue is always obvious.

I agree with almost all the above information but if you want to see the results of what others have done in the refinish dept. go to the classifieds and you may have to go back a few pages of the ones marked sold and you will find a M19-? that had been sold for I believe it was $575 that had been reblued at Ford's. It was incredible and I almost purchased it and in retrospect wish I had. The seller admitted he was upside down in it but at the price you paid and without any rust as an issue if you intend on keeping this firearm I would go for it. I believe the seller noted he had paid for a premium package but none the less it was beautiful. If you go online there is also an outfit in Texas that I approached at one time and they were very helpful and actually discouraged me due to some minor rust. I wish I had their name but I am sure there can't be that many bluing outfits in Texas. They might also be found using the Forum search. Find the one that sold it had great photos that might help you make up your mind.

Default This may help you decide.

Here is one re blued that sold lately. The seller notes he was upside down but in this case from what you purchased yours for you have some room to re blue IMHO. Some might say you should invest the money in a P+R if the -5 is not, I can't remember now right off the top of my head but I would go for it as life is to short for ugly/abused revolvers. Here is the ad.

My plan is to shoot it. It's solid as hell. It's only issues are cosmetic.

In the first photo, notice the large SW logo on the right side. It looks like it has lost some the design due to buffing during the bluing process. Not good in my opinion. Best left alone.

Congratulations! For a fine gun like a 19, it doesn't make me any difference when I shoot it if it's been reblued or not.

My understanding due to the info on this forum, is that the new blueing process that S&W uses is very fragile. That is,with ammonia-based cleaners.
Personally, I would just shoot it.
YMMV.

I had a well-known pistolsmith reblue an 18-4 and 28-2 for me. They came out fantastic. Great work. They "needed" it. It just bugged me knowing that they weren't "original" finish. I ended up selling both of them and eventually replacing them with nice, original guns.
