Model 650
My father recently passed and going through his firearms I found a S&W Model 650. It has a box that matches the serial number but no paperwork (manuals). It does have an extra 22LR cylinder. The gun had a set of rubber pachmayr-like grips and what appears to be after-market wood grips. The gun is in fairly good shape and appears to have not been used much. I don't remember seeing my Dad carry or shoot this gun. I am curious to find out more on this gun. Serial Number is AFLXXXX. I would like to know when the gun was made, opinions on the gun itself (pros, cons), and what it might be worth. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the S&W forum.
AFL series handguns were made in about 1987. The 650 was mfg between 1983 -1988 3" Heavy barrel, smooth combat trigger. If my memory serves me correctly, there were not an excessive number mfg. as more 651 (target) models were made. Together with the 22RF cylinder it might be considered a little scarce, not rare. A very shootable gun and a pleasure to use.

There are other points of view on the question of pleasure to shoot. Just make sure you don't shoot it without extra good ear protection. I recently searched 650's on this site & found quite a few who do not like the gun/cartridge.
That said- they are hard to find are seem to sell at high prices. Recently a 650 has been listed in the "for sale" section at $900 with no box & no extra cylinder.
The additional 22LR cylinder is a real bonus for use & if selling.

I paid $750 for this one a year ago.
The loudness is over stated, IMO.
With ear muffs, it's no louder than a 38 special J frame.
Having the 22lr cylinder is nice. Wish mine came with one.

A revolver with an AFL s/n prefix would of shipped in.....
September - December of 1984.
On the box label there should be a 4-digit number that begins with 4 or perhaps a 5.
What is that number?

Thanks for all the responses so far.
The only 4 digit number on the box label is under an item called "Spec. Order" and it is 6773.
