Default S&W Custom Shop change 686-4 to seven shot?

I read an ancient post on here indicating that S&W custom shop would at that time change a 686 from six to seven shot configuration, and at reasonable price. I'd like to end up with a 686-4 seven shot, and finding a factory original one is proving difficult, let alone at a "reasonable" price. Since I'm not really concerned with collectibility, I'd be just fine with a conversion.

A lot has changed in MA since that post I read was written. Does anyone here know if they still do that change on a pre-MIM action?

You might try giving them a call and asking this to them directly. That would be the surest way to find out that info, as well as a good estimate on the cost involved in the conversion too if they still do this.

I had a 686+ with 2" barrel. I liked having 7 shots but unfortunately I did not like the L frame and sold it. Worst part is I couldn't tell you what I didn't like about the L frame, it just felt awkward in my hands.

Joed, did your 686+ have a 2" or 2 1/2" bbl? I'm just curious.

Thanks-

They would have to replace everything inside to get the timing right.

You are better of leaving such a gun alone.

Buy a new 686+ with 2.5 or 3 inch barrel.

You will be satisfied. The lock is not an issue on this gun.

Plus, change the cylinder. I would think it would not be a cheap fix. Myself, I'd go and just buy a new 686+. The lock and MIM parts are a non-issue and I've found my newer 686s shoot more accurately than my older ones. New guns also come with a lifetime warranty. Your 686-4 is worth more stock than it ever would be with the P.C. swap and I cannot believe the cost to change it to a + would be worth the one extra round.

Why modify a perfectly good 686-4 for one additional shot. Just asking- to each his own
