What is your favorite handgun caliber?
What is your favorite handgun caliber? It can be revolver or autoloader.
Mine is the 357 Magnum.
Because I can shoot a powerful round and also the wonderful 38 Special, police choice and a bad-guy stopper for many years, even when the 45 Colt round was available. You can shoot both with in a 357 Magnum revolver.
Next, 9mm.
Cheap, ubiquitous, autoloader that will get the job done. Still, not up to the 357 Magnum for power and versatility (i.e. 38 Special).
Please participate.
God bless,
Birdgun

I have revolvers in every revo caliber out there, including 44 Auto Mag. My favorite one of all is the one I'm shooting at the moment.

I love a good .22. A close second is the .44 Special.

I have to agree with 22lr... I find them most accurate and cheap to shoot.
second is a toss up... 38/357, 10mm, 45acp/45colt, 44mag
Guess I just like to shoot...

Anyone with a M1 Carbine and a machete for a profile pic is a level headed guy in my book! Yeah, 22 is hard to beat. I've too much shooting to do before deciding on the centerfire of choice.

More than 70 percent of the S&W revolvers I own take a .38 Special so that must be it.
Chiefs Specials and postwar M&Ps rock 'n' roll.

Redford, watch out. Those 45 Colt guns can be addictive. I've only got seven (S&W 25-5, S&W 625-9, two Uberti Model P, two Uberti Open Tops, Uberti Model 1873 Sporting Rifle).

My favorite handgun cartrige is .22 LR but if you asked which I'd pick if I could only use one cartridge it would be .44 Magnum. With all due respect for .357s I've loaded down .44 Magnum to 180 grain cast bullets at 700 fps and there is no comparison on the high end. For a bullet caster the cost difference is insignificant. If the revolver has to be smaller there is the Model 69.
Automatics are great and everyone should have a few but not until after they have a dozen revolvers.

Self defense - .45acp
General all around use - .38/.357 magnum
Getting other's attention - .500 S&W

I'm in love -I've always been - with .38 Spl. Very close to it, follows the .22 (LR & short: the last one, very unusual today and hard to find, is "delicious" to me).

I always carry several handguns to the range. Only limited to how many I want to clean after the shooting session. There is always a 38/357 in the bunch.

IF I COULD HAVE ONLY ONE GUN---FOR PURE VERSATILITY OF PURPOSE--ON THE RANGE, IN THE FIELD, FOR CCW /SD OR HD--AS WELL AS THE WIDE VARIETY OF AMMO, IN .37 MAG/.38 SPL, I WOULD CHOOSE THE M686+, 4", MOUNTAIN GUN.......(EXTREME LEFT IN THE 3 MG LINEUP, BELOW)

.45 Long Colt
The legendary center-fire cartridge which debuted in 1873 alongside the equally legendary Colt Single Action Army revolver (aka the Peacemaker) yet still remains relevant and popular well over a century later. Designed not only to be a decisive man-stopper on the battlefield, but also to literally down the horse he rode in on, this cartridge packs a serious wallop in the original Black Powder loading, and in modern maximum power Smokeless Powder loads can equal or surpass the .44 Magnum with significantly lower chamber pressure.
.45 Automatic Colt Pistol
The decedent of the legendary .45 Long Colt designed in 1905 by the iconic John Moses Browning to duplicate the performance of the US Military's Black Powder .45LC load from decades past in a modern Smokeless Powder cartridge fired from a semiautomatic pistol. The .45 ACP was adopted along with the timeless classic that is the M1911 and proudly served the US Military for over a century even after being replaced by the Beretta 92 platform chambered in 9mm Luger as the standard issue sidearm of SpecOps. Much like the .45LC before it, as if the .45 ACP wasn't already effective enough in the original Standard Pressure loads, more powerful +P and .45 Super loads increase the effectiveness of the .45 ACP to rival full-power 10mm Auto loads.
.380 Automatic Colt Pistol
Often mistaken as a shortened version of the 9mm Luger cartridge as a result of their dimensional similarities, (9x17 - 9x19) the .380 ACP is in fact a scaled down .45 ACP designed in 1908 by John Moses Browning to offer the maximum amount of power possible in a compact straight blowback operated semiautomatic pistol. Many consider it to be the bare minimum in terms of viable self-defense cartridges, but it served as both a military and law enforcement cartridge across Europe well into the 1980s. In modern self-defense loads, the .380 ACP offers performance similar to the .38 Special, with High Velocity loads (often inaccurately marketed as +P loads) which offer performance similar to the Russian 9x18mm Makarov cartridge, and thus remains a popular self-defense cartridge to this day.

Favorite handgun caliber? Easy! It's the .22 LR!!! No doubt about it. I positively adore the .22 LR caliber especially in handguns. I have a little 18-3 that I've fired a wheel barrow load of ammo through. It is the most accurate little revolver I've ever fired without exception regardless of the manufacturer or ammo used. Using CCI Mini-Mags or Aguila that little revolver will simply obliterate the center of a standard bullseye. Three or four hours of shooting ... cost is just negligible. Nothing even approaches it for utility, accuracy, cost effectiveness, etc. Sincerely. bruce.

Tough to come up with a favorite, but if I had to choose one, it'd be the most versatile of them all- the .44 Magnum.

That’s a tough question. I like mag rounds, I think it comes down to .357 or .44 mag. I don’t know that you can call either of them more versatile than the other; they both cover such a spectrum. They kind of ‘overlap’ in a zone, for lack of better term, but I think I have to take the .44 mag for where it’s particular spectrum tops out; if you need/want/must have the ability to go there. I have only recently started shooting any 44 special, and am discovering it’s a surprisingly awesome round in ways I would not have thought. I like it better than .45 ACP.

I only have a Ruger SR22 and M&P .40. But my favorite caliber is 9MM. I don't think there is a better general purpose caliber than 9MM. It is proven in law enforcement and general purpose all around easy to shoot caliber.

.357. Unless I'm shooting a 44, unless I'm shooting a 22, unless I'm shooting a 308.
Hey 75 Vette, you're gong to run out of pool table pretty soon.

While I pretty much like them all, I have also narrowed it down to the 22 and it's double, a 44 special. Since as a reloader I have more versatality with a reloadable cartridge, I choise the 44 special. (Never did like shooting a 44 magnum much.)

In a revolver, the 44 mag, because I handload and can make it do great things. I would not want full house 44's all the time. In a semi auto, the 45acp.
Shooting cheap, and just plain fun, the 22 in a model 17
As a secondary thought, I have never fired one, but the 41 mag has always had a lot of appeal to me

I will be as bad as everyone else and suggest several
22 LR is one of the greatest all around cartridges
9mm is a go to but I am a 45 ACP guy for sure in semi auto
357 for the reasons above, but a slow stopper in 45 LC is awfully nice

Probably favorite Caliber
The .44 S&W Special is probably my most
favorite Revolver Caliber.
It is something different to most people, easy
to Reload, easy to Shoot, usually always Accurate.

MY favorite caliber is 41 mag for target and hunting.
If I could only chose one caliber for everyday carry it would be a 357 in some form

Like so many others if I had to pick one favorite it would have to be the 357.
I can load everything from light 105 grain bunny-toot 38 special loads with the power factor of a hot 22lr, all the way up to 180 grain fire breathing 357 magnums that will take down big game.
Hard to beat that much versatility and that wide of a spread with anything else.

Technically, I shouldn’t be answering on this thread because I don’t own a revolver manufactured after 1980 , but since the original question was about caliber, here goes. My favorite is .38 Special. Favorite to shoot, favorite to reload, and chambered in my favorite revolvers. It does everything I need it to do. I understand those who prefer .357 revolvers for their “versatility”, and if I still had any, I might agree, but I don’t own or shoot magnums any more. Good shootin’,

The answer to every caliber war is 357 mag.
Hard to call a favorite though...

.45 ACP, accurate, easy to reload to various power levels, available in a multitude of platforms. Probably not the best at any one thing, but does everything pretty well.

My favorite handgun caliber is the one I'm shooting at the moment.
Since I was in an informal bullseye league, I probably have shot more rounds of 22 LR than any other caliber, but I shot some PPC also, so there have been a pile of 38s in my back trail as well.
For emotional attachment though, there is a soft spot in my heart (or head?) for the 32s. It started with an I-frame Regulation Police and now extends to my custom K-frame stainless 327. I guess if I had to declare a favorite, that would have to be it.

44 and then... well... everything else.
Really respect the 45acp for SD in a 1911. Straight shooting!
Warming up to the 480 these days.
Generally I like any caliber with few exceptions, but those listed stand out.

Since I am long retired and shoot mostly 22lr now, I would say that is my favorite. If money were no object I would say 357 mag/ 38 Special. For autos it is 9mm.

Hands down favorite is .38 Special in all it various manifestations. Has
been a favorite for decades. I like 148 grain wadcutters. There is no better shooting experience than shooting clover lead groups with .38 wadcutters on a nice Sunday afternoon. Enjoy 158 grain RNL (even more accurate than WC). Like hot loaded +P 158 grain SWC. I shoot .38s all the time, reload for it, cast bullets for it, etc. Have multiple 5 gallon buckets of empty .38 brass. I tend to think some flavor of .38 will do about anything we could reasonaly expect a handgun to do.
Second favorite is probably .22 LR, for all the reasons the previous posters mentioned.
My third favorite is fairly new to me. .30 Luger (7,65 Luger). I got an old 1929 model Swiss Luger that is stupid accurate with this round. Flat shooting, low recoil, but really clangs the steel plates. Different. Bottleneck. I’m infatuated, at least for now. Maybe the thrill will fade.
Honorable mentions include .44 Special and .32 S&W Long.
Shot a lot of .357. I respect the round, but would not say it is actually a favorite. I always tend to find it too much of a good thing, and ease back to hot .38 Special.
Shot a ton of .45 ACP. Again, I respect it. But never really got to be best friends with it.

I could get all logical and practical on you guys. But, that would yield a boring answer. For me, the cartridge that makes me grin is the 44 Special. There's something about it that's just right. My infatuation with the 44 Special is more than logical, it's close to lust. I can't pass one up without looking at it at the least. Sometimes they jump into my arms and demand to be taken home. I never met a 44 Special I didn't like.
Dang it, Skeeter! :-)
