Model 10 standard barrel

I'm a relatively new gun owner and have fallen in love with the model 10 standard barrels (pencil barrels) and have decided to start collecting these guns. I guess my question is when did Smith & Wesson stop offering the standard barrel model 10's? Do any of you own any later models with the standard barrels? I wish they still offered them (without those gross locks of course &#128530

Good question. The only standard barrel Model 10s I recall seeing with MIM hammers were part of the modern Classic line. MIM hammers were phased in about 1996 to 1997 so, if I recall correctly, the last standard production Model 10s with standard barrels were made before then.

How's your collection coming along? I'd want each of the barrel lengths, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inch before different butt shapes. Technically 2 1/2" were made but they are too scarce to chase after this early. I think 5" looks the best.

Welcome to the forum ,you are in a good place for expert advice .The model 10s are great revolvers and can make for a very interesting collection .After shooting for years I thought I knew something about revolvers especially S&Ws but found out very quick " thought I knew" was right . I think the M10-9 was the last traditional barrel M&P before the lock. Most -9's had the pencil barrel, but like all thing S&W there's always exceptions, and some went out with HBs.

I've seen the following:

Round butt, 4-inch, product code 100108.
Round butt, 2-inch, product code 100102.
Square butt, 5-inch, product code 100110.
Square butt, 3-inch, product code 100134. Made for Turkey Republic Police, white stripe front, white dot rear, inscribed “T.C. POLIS”.

The -9, from my observations, was in production during the 1989 to 1997 era. A small number of Performance Center specials were made latter in the early 2000's.

You'll never see a newer Model 10 without the lock. No Smith revolver made with an exposed hammer that can be cocked into single action will ever be made without lock.

Yes, and that particular model with a 4 inch barrel is right near the top of my favorite revolvers. Not particularly valuable or rare but just classy and classic in every way. Oh, BTW, I love stainless steel.

This is my Model 10-9 that shipped from the factory on April 12, 1996. It has the 4" tapered barrel, and round butt with grooves, or as the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, refers to them, "serrated backstrap and forestrap".

Wow! That is the perfect Deep South hot and humid weather carry revolver. I have a 10-5 4” with the round butt which is my “tux” revolver when a belt is not available. With an old Bianchi #6 suede clip on holster it hides well and the 4” barrel keeps the grip frame snug against the body.
