Default S&W 686-6 missing or phantom part ??

Hi. Hoping someone can help me out. Other day I took the side plate off my new 686-6 revolver to get to know it a little better.

I was cycling the trigger with the side plate off when suddenly something tiny went flying ! My guess is it was a spring. It shot out and vanished, never to be seen again. Searched the area for hours trying to find whatever it was, but no luck.

At this point I've done hours of research trying to figure out what that part could be. I've watched every disassembly/reassembly video I can find on the L-frame. I've completely disassembled and reassembled mine several times already and Nothing seems to be missing ! It cycles and works fine both double and single action. Just using snap caps for now.

I'm at wits end at this point. I wasn't able to find a schematic for the 686-6. And based off whatever info I did find, nothing seems to be missing off mine. There were two other people that saw something go flying so I know it's not just in my head.

Any thoughts ?

Maybe it was the hammer block.
A photo of the gun with side plate removed would help too.

It was most likely the firing pin retaining pin. Those have a habit of popping out under those conditions.

Not meant as a criticism, but you should never cycle the action with the sideplate off.

Definitely not the hammer block. And firing pin retaining pin seems in place.

I’m a mechanic by trade so all my toys eventually get completely taken apart and put back together. I try to figure them out and understand them as much as I can. I have more of a bond and more confidence with them afterwards. Unfortunately, sometimes growing pains do apply. I had seen a bunch of 686 videos and had seen this be done with nothing going flying.

Uhh... Wouldn't consider the hammer block a tiny part either.

The piece that shot out seemed pretty small.

The Hammer Block is Item 78 on the schematic.

I noticed on taking one of mine apart that it was the firstest thing to come out (it is not "attached" to anything; it just rests in its place and the side plate holds it in).

$4.99 from Brownell's.

Here it is all taken apart again. It’s pretty much completely disassembled except for the lock mechanism.

To elaborate a little - The hammer and trigger pivot on the hammer and trigger studs which are pressed into the frame on the left side and sit in recessed areas on the side plate. When the side plate is removed the studs are only supported on one side.

A couple cycles of the action probably won't hurt anything but I'd recommend removing tension on the mainspring before cycling the action. Additionally you should remove tension on the mainspring before removing the side plate to reduce stress on the hammer and trigger studs.

There doesn't appear to be anything missing. Put it back together and shoot it.

May have been just a little piece of crud or metal, that was trapped in the action, and took the opportunity to escape with the sideplate off.

Yes the firing pin bushing is still there.
Put it back together and shoot it it is !

Btw. My Rolex tells time better than ever now. I meticulously polished every individual piece. It’s more of a “Flow” than a “Movement” now. Plus now I feel more bonded with it and have more confidence in its timing accuracy.

There is a very very small two sided spring that holds the key locking
mechanism into place and I do not see yours. This spring in hard to see with the naked eye.

I hope this helps.

I was thinking the same thing, then I took one off the shelf and the spring is hidden behind the locked flag, if he removed the flag it's possible it's the missing piece. The pictures hide the spring position because it's behind the flag. Might be the piece.

I'm no help as to what the piece could be but I admit to cycling a couple of my Smiths with the side plate off several times. Maybe the mental support will help.

The super tiny spring behind the lock flag is still there so it’s not that either.

Cylinder stop spring ? I believe that is in my photo. Is there more than one ?

A satanical S&W employee put an extra spring in your gun to cause you consternation if/when you found it.

It's as good an explanation as any offered so far....

As a service to the readers here, what is the name of the place where you do the mechanical work?

I own a few S&W’s. Until this year I had never removed a single side plate. I have a friend who is a pistol smith and I asked him to show me how. He did. But now I feel comfortable doing this myself. Knowing all the time I have a backup if I run into problems.

Default S&W 686-6 MISSING OR PHANTOM PART?

Try sweeping the area again with a large magnet. I use one off a large discarded speaker. If its there that should pull it in for ya.

Looks like everything is there. How does the action feel? I'd put it back together at this point and try to shoot it. Doesn't look like any small part is missing or broken.

If the action isn't smooth either send it back or find a local gunsmith to check it out for you.

A hint: Take them apart in a large plastic bag so your parts can never escape.

I lost a cylinder bolt spring once when removing that ******* "HH" lock. That was a show stopper for sure while waiting for Numrich to send me (2)... But I wasn't pulling the trigger or cycling anything with the side-plate off. OP, take it to your buddy if he is a real certified pistol/revolver smith. Otherwise, send it back to Smith with a detailed note of what you did. Even though this is 100% your fault... Smith will still pay shipping both ways and fix her for free. That's the kind of stand up people they have running S&W!

On a related note, I was once reassembling a Davis derringer after replacing a broken selector. Of course, as I was about finished and was installing the mainspring, the guide pin sproinged out and I heard it bounce on the hardwood floor.

I searched and hunted and moved furniture and combed through floor sweepings with a magnet for days to no avail. Finally I broke down and ordered a new part. When I sold my workshop and moved several year later, lo-and-behold, there was the guide pin. It had flown ten feet away, through a closet door and skittered underneath a dusty bookcase. It lay there for a decade amidst the dust bunnies while I waited for the Davis derringer to appreciate enough to recover my costs. I'm sorry to report it never happened and I'm still in a financial hole.

I know, I know - what I paid for the new parts plus shipping is about what that gun was worth, but I just couldn't abide having a non-working gun I knew I could fix. I've used the plastic bag trick for disassembly AND reassembly ever since.

Just to Update. I reassembled the 686 and have fired 100 rounds so far. 50 rounds each of 357 magnum and 38 special. Gun performed flawlessly. While it was apart, I did some polishing of the moving parts and also installed a spring kit. It’s got a smooth, much softer double action now and the single action, I’d say it’s the definition of a “hair trigger”. Very Nice !

The same thing happened to me with my 686+. It was a very small coil spring unlike any other L frame spring. Mine was just lying loose inside.

That lends some credence to the above quote.
