Default My 686 is back from S&W today.

Arrived today with note that the bbl was aligned and test fired.
With rain scheduled for tomorrow I may not get to the range until
Monday. Here's hoping it was fixed!

686 is a stainless revolver. I'm guessing that you are not stainless, but both of you can endure a little rain!

I guess I am not that hard core. I usually shoot sporting clays Saturday mornings and I am even skipping that!

Not sure until I shoot it, but they left the throat a little rough. I do not know what the throat would have to do with it shooting 5" to the left at 15yds.

I finally got to the range today. I had loaded up some 38 special for the accuracy test. With Speer 158 gr SWC, 4. grs of Win 231 it was shooting about 1" to the right at 15 yds with a very nice group. Much better than my initial test. Tuned the sight 1" to the left and shot about 25 reloads of Bullseye with the same set up. My group opened way up but was centered.
I then attempted to shoot some double action. After the second round the gun bound up and I had to empty the cylinder and free up the action.
Ditto the second time, something was not allowing the hammer to come all the way back and release. The gun was very dirty after about 50 rounds through it, the 231 really got it dirty. Here I am thinking, ok back to S&W for another trip.
I stopped at the gun dealer I purchased the gun from on the way home. We talked about what could cause the problem. He looked on u tube and found a video where someone said he had the same problem when his Smith was very dirty.
I did a good cleaning today and will make another trip to the range this week for some double action only shooting.

I am thinking 50 rounds no mater how dirty should not have locked it up. Lets hope I am wrong and a good cleaning takes care of it.

Before you clean it, check for scratches on the front of the cylinder that would indicate a very tight barrel/cylinder gap. If you have already cleaned it, use a feeler gauge to check the gap. It should be at least .004.

I shoot a lot of 38 special with either the Speer 158 SWC or Hornady 158 with 231 and Bullseye out of my 686-6 and don’t have that issue.
Bullseye is a little dirty but with 231 it hardly looks like it’s been shot after a 100 to 200 rounds.

My 686 6" was shaving copper off of JHP bullets and drew blood
under my safety glasses.

The cylinder was replaced and they reamed the barrel.

I will test when this "Spring weather" clears up and winds die down.

Something is really wrong with that 686. Mine has shot 500 plus rounds throughout an afternoon of family shooting with the reloads I mentioned and with some factory 38 and 357 loads.
It looked like a 586 it was so dirty but never once stopped working.
Sure hope you can get it sorted out. I would really like to get a new S&W Classic 25 but not so sure about taking the chance on it especially what it’s going to cost me.

Bawhawhahahahaha! Yes OP, a wee bit of rain is nothing to shy away from when testing our carry pieces... I find my best days of Kayak fishing are in a light rain as well my best days of hunting animals as well. YMMV... But I'm betting most of you have my sentiments!

ETA: OP something else is going on with your Revo... I hope it gets right I really do... Best wishes!

Default I went to test my recently remodeled 686..

But it was SO hot saturday that by the time we finished with rifles we were in rough shape and didn't get to the pistol range. Everybody else was really glad that I brought enough soda and water for everybody. Which was lucky because I didn't know we were going to have four people.

I do hope the cleaning will fix it up. I find it hard to imagine though, how dirty a 686 would have to be to bind up. My binding problem may have been the recall of the firing pin/bushing that was letting early models of the 686 lock up. I locked it up for the first time in over 5 years so I sent it back. As per above comment, I haven't been able to test it yet.

I'm starting to wonder if all your problems have been ammo related. Grab a couple Remington green & white box 38 special or 357 magnum and try it again.

Thanks for all the comments.
I checked the spacing between the cylinder and the bbl throat and a .003 feeler fits with slight play. The next size I had was a .006 and it would not go, so I figure it is about .004 -.005.
The 2 powders I used are probably 10 years old or so, been shooting Unigue in my 45 and 9mm and 20 ga. so have not needed them.
I am going back to the range this morning and have some factory Blazer 158gr jacketed to try double action.
If everything goes ok I plan on picking up some fresh powder this weekend. All in all I am hoping I do not have to send it back again!

Glad to hear you got it back.

My M&P is still at SW. It was received by SW on Feb 23 -- waiting for a frame replacement. Mags would not drop out as expected. They keep telling me a couple more weeks.

yeah, ya have to go thru a process of elimination. I hate sending stuff back only to discover it was something simple. Once you ruled everything out then yeah, give C/S a phone call and take it from there. I hope all works well out for you at the range though.

I thought I could beat the rain today. Buy the time I got to the range front gate it was starting to rain. I thought maybe it will not last long! Waited 20 minutes in the truck, no let up.
Then I thought the hell with it, like what was said here "the gun is stainless.' At 72 my finish has warn off but I don't think I would rust!
Put 3 cylinders of factory ammo through it without a hiccup. Thought I would try my reloads again, same, no problems.
I was cranking them off as fast as possible, no problems. I guess it could have been the dirt/residue or a burr or something.
Hopefully I have seen the last of this nonsense.
Thanks for all the input, it helps!

Per post #12;

4.0 grs of w231 is way too low.......... and will be dirty !!

I load 4.7 grs in a 38 case for 893fps with a lead 158 Speer bullet.

In a "L" frame this bullet in a 38 case can get up to 1124fps with slow powders.

I can see why you are having problems.

I was going by the Speer manual #12, I know it is a little old.

Min load = 4.0 gr at 792 mzi vel
Max load = 4.4 gr at 878 mzi vel
This load is for plinking but I want a efficient burn without leading.

Probably had some powder residue under the cylinder star and the cartridge head was dragging on the recoil shield.

I load 4.7 grs in a 38 case for 893fps with a lead 158 Speer bullet.

In a "L" frame this bullet in a 38 case can get up to 1124fps with slow powders.

I can see why you are having problems.
Really? I use HP38. Same as 231, correct? The hodgson website says 3.1 grains to 3.8 for 158 grain LSWC. 3.8 to 4.3 for fmj. I recently switched to plated so am loading 3.8 grains. I never load .357 cases, though.

I use a load of 3.4 grains of 231 with a lead 158 SWC and it works fine and isn't very dirty.
