Default First time pistol @ 50 yds!!

Well today was my first crack at 50 yard shooting with any pistol. What fun!! Unfortunately it was a last minute decision and so only got 2 chances/targets. 8 rounds each. Pictured is my second target. First one was good, but not as good. Oddly, this second one that's pictured I was tired and relaxed and got better groupings, haha, kind of a hail Mary since they said 2 more minutes until cold and I had 6 left in the chamber.

This was from my TRR8 (8 shots, 1 off paper), Aimpoint Micro. 357 ammo was my load, cast RN red powder coated 160 grains (cant think where I bought them from, if you know, let me know, I need more!!). IMR 4227, about 15.5 give or take as I use Lee Dippers.

Looking good! I feel a better sense of accomplishment shooting at (and hitting) targets at 25 yards or more. Unless I'm shooting a 4" barrel or shorter the target starts at 25 yds. You should check into your local IHMSA matches and shoot at steel critters out to 100 yds or Big Bore class to 200 meters (I haven't made that one myself yet).

A couple of months ago, My friend set up a 100yard 10" round steel target. He was shooting his red dotted AR-15 at it. I took one shot out of my 5" 629 and rang the gong. I just walked away like I did it all the time. Nothing like shooting steel at a distance.

At 50 yards, I'd be hurting my shoulder patting myself on the back if I got a shot on paper.

On thing good about the steel game, a hit is a hit. Dead on center or a nick on the edge, all good in my book.

Most of the time I shoot at public ranges the "pistoleros"are wearing out the 7 yard range. I love breaking out a S&W or two and shooting at the 25 or 50 yard line...You get some good looks. I am working on 100 yards, but so far do not get out often enough to be proficient.

I have a “backyard” range. I have 8”, 6” and 4” round plates at 80yds which is as far as I can go. Did have at 100 but moved bench up to be in shade. I find myself shooting at the long distance more and more. Only use the 50ft target for checking loads and sighting in optics. Amazing how accurate even a 4” can be with good optics. No problem ringing the 6” plate with a 4” gun with a good red dot optic and right load. I have a couple of the clamp on style mounts which are surprisingly stable and stay put even with full .357 loads. Next experiment is going to be with my 3” model 66.

Practicing at 50 and 100 makes your 10 and 25yd groups really tiny.
I shoot 460sw at 200-300yds at a 12”.
You really practice your flinch at that range. Rings gong maybe 1 in 5.
Its NOT the gun and NEVER you.
ALWAYS blame wind

Here are pictures of the tool you need for shooting at 50 yards. It was used back in the days of the Police Pistol Combat (PPC) competition matches. This one was built by Ken Eversull featuring a 6" slabbed sided, heavy contour custom barrel and a Bill Davis custom sight rib manufactured by Aristocrat. The rib has rear windage adjustment and front sliding elevation adjustments preset for 7, 25 & 50 yards. This one is based upon a S&W Model 10-7 frame. It is specially tuned for double action shooting. The hammer has been bobbed and has an installed trigger stop. It weighs about 3 lbs. 10 ounces.

I sometimes help run rimfire silhouette matches at our local club. Knocking over steel rams with a .22 pistol at 100 yards just NEVER gets old.
The cool thing is that at 100 yds, you pull the trigger, wait for what seems like an eternity for the bullet to get there, then (if your good, lucky or both), watch the target start to tumble. It's only after the target is 1/2 way down will you finally hear the ring of the steel. :-)

At 200m I have given up waiting and started to move onto the next Ram with the .44 before the critter begins to topple. Thinking: "Dang, thought that felt like a good shot, can't underst....Oh, nevermind!"

You'd think. I've seen multiple times where an edge hit does nothing but vibrate the target. Or the infamous tail hit on 150m Big Bore Turkeys that does nothing but rotate them 90 or 180 degrees, "laughing" at you as they remain on the rail. Even had a Ram resist a good .44 hit once at 200. Kdiver58 watched through the spotting scope as the bullet flew in and hit the steel in exactly the wrong place- pushing it straight back but not enough to have it topple.

Mighty fine work, especially for a first attempt AND with cast bullets! Far easier to start off using jacketed projectiles.

When I started in law enforcement in 1968 the 50 yard line was part of our qualification using our issued Model 15s. I shot expert (95% >) my entire 30 year career but this was quite a challenge. This requirement was deleted in later years and now 25 yards is as far as it goes.

I've been an IHMSA member on/off since 1982. It's the best game there is to improve your long range skills with a handgun and teach you how to reload. I started with an 8 3/8" Model 57 and a few years later switched to a Model 29 in the same barrel length.

I have LEOSA coming up next month and am practicing w/my Glock 17 @ 25 yards b/c I am determined to score 100% this year. Past scores have been 97% and the flyer is always @ 25.

Every time I go to the range, I put 50 rounds through my qualification 1911 at 25 yards. It has put me at the 100% mark in my LEOSA quals.

You should be able to browse around the IHMSA home page & find something close to you. I just started getting my feet wet with these fine folks 3 years ago and have had a great time. It looks like you're ready to go with those two set ups! Nice.
Welcome to IHMSA - Main

I love shooting at longer ranges with handguns. With my eyesight these days I'm really just wasting ammo but it's still fun.

A while back a bud and I were shooting our j-frames at 100yds...now to be honest we missed A LOT but had a few very satisfying hits on an old hubcap!

Funny I seem to remember the hits better than the misses

Default eye sight fix

I'm 67 and wear 4:00 power magnifiers to see. With scoped handgun can get right back in the bulls eye, I did. First photo's a M-53 with .22 LR cylinder (3" target) , seconds a M-14 using 2.7 bull's-eye and hollow base wadcutter, last are others alternate at the range weekly different each time. My advice to get back in the fun.
