Opinions sought: 629-2 Mountain Revolver (Update...layaway and pics)
Saw a 629-2 at a shop listed as a "Mountain Gun". I really don't know anything about these guns, but thought it looked cool.
Gun is in good condition and has Hogue rubber grips on it. The finish is a matte stainless, and it has black sights. Barrel length is 4 inches. No box or papers. Price is $850.
I'm wondering is this is a good price, and if this is a desirable gun to get. I would love to hear any and all opinions on this model gun.
Serial number is BDY9102. Can someone tell me when this gun shipped? Thanks.

IMO, yeah and oh yeah! I guess it depends on what part of the country you're in, but I think N-frame MG's tend to sell for more than that. If you like the idea of a 4-inch 44 magnum hand cannon that's a few ounces lighter than the norm, it's a great gun. Not everyone's cup of tea, due to the extra recoil, but highly desirable nonetheless, because it's a little easier to carry and possibly conceal. If it's truly a mountain gun, the barrel will narrow noticeably just ahead of the frame and I believe it should also say Mountain Gun on the barrel. I think you're looking at a 1990 gun, which is when S&W was at the top of its game. If you are in the market for a 44 magnum, don't let it get away.

I owned one of the first Mountain Guns of that vintage. It's one of the ones I wish I had back. I wouldn't hesitate to pay that for one in good shape.

The BDY serial number prefix was being inscribed on new Smiths in.... May - August of 1989.
The Mountain Gun, in my view, has the same shape and form as the old school Highway Patrolman. (Except the HP was a .357 and blue). Which was built specifically for police use.
Everything you need. Nothing you don't. A strong working revolver built to be a little bit lighter to help facilitate everyday carry. Product code for the -2 4-inch MG was 103652.

The "Mountain Revolver" was a limited run of 5000 guns in 1989. They had no special markings, but featured a lightweight tapered barrel, a chamfered cylinder, a bead blasted finish and were supplied with Pachmayr Grippers. This was the first iteration of what later became the "Mountain Gun". My serial number prefix is BDW.
These are pre-endurance package guns and they're lighter than a standard 4" .44 Mag, so I prefer to shoot mostly .44 Specials and only occasionally use magnums. I haven't decided which grips I like best, but I don't like to leave rubber grips on long term.

S&W Model 629 44Mag Mountain Gun
I believe that is a good price, for not having
the box and all.
If you are serious, use that for leverage, and
see if you can get it at $800 "out the door".
Take cash.
I bought one about a year ago, and really enjoy
it. Mine was a "Safe Queen". I paid a little more
plus tax. I also have the 45Colt MG and really
enjoy that.
Which ever I pick, they are nice to carry during
during Elk Hunting (protection against Black Bear).
I reload so I have reloads for Plinking to Hunting.
Reloading is my time and $8.00 for 50 cartridges
I've been reloading for a long time, so I have all
the stuff.
Good luck in your endeavor and whatever you decide.
Give us a Range Report when you shoot it.

I agree with The Norseman. See if you can use the no box & docs to your advantage and offer $800. If they won’t budge I’d still pay the $850 all day long.

Wonderful revolvers and beautiful examples S&W Chad... I prefer 4" and 3" barreled 629's personally. I put 80% .44Specials thru my 3" but it's not bad at all running 3-4 full house cylinders of .44mags each range session to stay sharp for "Woods Use"... Although, I think I've found the near perfect Woods Gun Load. It's a 255grain "Keith" Hard Cast in .44Special from Underwood. Before I was using 300grain semi-jacketed lead flat points... of which I still have a healthy stock of and can use in a pinch when at the family mountain home; as I left 50 or so up there in the spare closet on a high shelf.
OP, that Mountain Gun is in good shape then $850 is $100-$150 less than they go for in my area. I say go for it!

Great guns! If you can get one for $850, I’d jump on it.
I bought one back in ‘89 and stupidly and regretfully traded it for another gun. Last August at a small gun show I found a “minty” 629-2 Mountain Revolver with box, grips and goodies for $650. Knowing they often go for twice that, I grabbed it and ran. It keeps my 625-6 MG, which I found NIB a few months earlier, from getting lonely.
I had a 329 I used when backpacking, but soon dumped it after acquiring the above guns.

Thanks, everyone for the advice and information!
I ran back and placed the gun on layaway. BTW, the lockup on it was perfect. I can see a faint dirt line on the frame where from it wearing Pachmayr grips. I will grab a set for it after I get it paid off.

S&W Model Mountain Gun
Wow! That does really look like in really
good shape!
If you do reload here's a few recipes:
My current, go to, plinking 44 Magnum reload is;
240gr Lead Semi Wad Cutter Laser Cast bullet
5.6grs Alliant Red Dot, CCI LP #300 primer
Brass is Winchester, Remington, Federal, Starline.
Crimp is what I call medium roll crimp.
FPS approximately 825.
Bullets tumbled lube with Ben's Liquid Lube,
for Lead free barrel performance.
Primers no where near flat.
My go to Reload for Deer/Soft skin animals
240gr Hornady XTP
22.5 - 23grs Winchester 296
CCI LP Mag #350 primer
Cases: Win or R-P
Crimp: Medium, is what I think is Medium
FPS: chronographed 22.5grs 1300fps
with 23grs approaching 1400 stout with
revolver in my avatar.
Enjoy!

My .44 Magnum MG is a -4. It's sitting in the drawer beneath my key board as I type. My .45 ACP MG is next to my bed. These are fine revolvers.

The MG is great for hiking and wanting a big bore gun with you for things like bear or big cats. I've got a -5 that goes with me.
Full 44 Mag loads are a little brutal so practice with loads like The Norseman offered at 800+ fps.. makes it fun to shoot when plinking.

Excellent decision. That’s a fine example of the Mountain gun design! I’m envious. I forget about the advantage of layaway when cash isn’t immediately at hand.

Great move, the dash 2 was the precursor of the Mountain Gun which came with a satin finish. The gun that you just locked in is the Mountain Revolver with the bead blasted finish and even more desirable. Congrats!
