Nice gun. l picked up a pre mim Mt Gun in 45 Colt earlier this year... l

really like it. lmhop the 45 Colt ctg isn't much fun or accurate w/light

target loads.. l shoot the shorter 45 Schofield cases in it. Much more

pleasant and accurate.. Thankfully S&W solved the little throat/big bore

problem in the 625s in 45Colt..

Default S&W Model 625 45ACP Mountain Gun

Congratulations on getting that
S&W Model 625 45ACP Mountain Gun,
you wanted.

It is always nice when someone remembers
your demeanor, keeps you in mind, and saves
something for you.
He must have known your situation and how
much a cool revolver meant to you.

Please, when you get a chance to shoot it,
post a Range Report for us. Thank you.

I'm going to check out a few LGS today and see if they have any moon clips in stock just so I can shoot and extract easily. I want to get a feel for the gun before I go all in on it, as I've never shot/owned an N frame or a .45 ACP revolver. Both of which I'm excited about. If I can find them at a LGS then I'll shoot it today! I just don't feel like shooting and having to poke out empties with a rod!!

If you don't have a moon clip tool for removing the brass, you might want to pick up some surplus half moon clips. They are easier to load and unload by hand and work fine.

It is easy to fill full moons by pressing them down around cartridges laid on a flat surface. I like doing that on the lid of the large plastic tool box I use for a rain proof range bag. A change in the lid's height creates a stop to press the cartridge against. After the novelty of a store bought filler wore off I'd probably go back to my old method. It is easy to make a demooner out of an old golf club handle or a capped piece of pipe. Half of the open end is cut filed lower making a step that contacts the clip while you rotate it prying the cases out. Empties collect in the tube.

All of my 1917s and 625s give reliable ignition without clips. Pointing the revolver up a lot of the empties fall out. Those that do not are easily pulled out with a finger nail. While for a century the poke 'em out with a rod story has been a way for authors to fill out gun stories I've never seen that done in real life. Polish your shoes before asking the bank for a loan and use your moon clips at matches. Neither are necessary on casual days.

Its funny you mentioned that as that is exactly what I did today. I decided to take it to the range and see how it would perform without the clips the LGS didn't have any for sale. Turns out it was awesome! Fired all rounds flawlessly, I'd say about 80% of the spent cases fell out when i tipped up the cylinder. The rest easily came out with a slight shake or my finger tips. This mountain gun is a beast, it didn't seem large until I was shooting it. Although that size really soaked up the recoil of the .45 (it has never been an issue for me in 1911's) despite being in a revolver. The 625 shot great though overall, sights were off quite a bit for me at first but after some tweaking they are pretty close (still shoots about 1" to the right for me). I've added some pics from the range, first cylinder full at 21 feet and then the second pic was my final group at 21 feet. I settled into the mountain gun by the end and my group definitely shrank! I love the grips on the gun, nice full and beautiful, great to look at! I noticed while shooting that they slid around alot in my hands so I might invest in a hogue monogrip or something for shooting purposes just so I can get a better purchase. I have the monogrip on my K and L frames and love the way they feel when shooting.
