Default Anyone Carry the 627PC....the BloodWork Revolver??

Hey all,

One of my very favorite S&W pistols is the 627PC. Since seeing it and handling it at the NRA show here in Houston 5 or so years ago, I have wanted one. Such a beautiful pistol that feels great in my hand.

I am curious whether those that have them, actually carry them for CCW. I know it ain't a pocket carry pistol, and it wouldn't be much harder than carrying a full sized 1911. I think carrying 8 rounds of 357mag rounds would be very desirable. The size and weight of this pistol would allow you to shoot those 357mag loads that are too much for the J Frames. It also is cut for Moon Clips which would give you the ability to reload much faster and with practice, almost as fast as a semi auto.

So...those that own this beautiful pistol, do you carry it or not? If so, how about telling us about it and how it works out for you and what rig you use to carry it with. PICS would certainly be welcomed. I would really like to see your pics of your 627PC and the holster you carry it in.

Lastly, would you recommend it to others for CCW use?

Thanks all for your time.
Have a great weekend.

Larry

It's definitely carryable, with a good belt and holster. I carried mine in a Wright Banshee IWB holster. Weight isn't a huge problem, most people have more issue with the width of the N frames cylinder, especially IWB. The grips that come on them suck, completely. Great for concealment, terrible for anything else. I ended up trading mine for a 586 L-Comp, the weight difference is only about 0.2 ounces or so but the L frame definitely carried more comfortably. I will end up getting another 627 eventually though, it's too nice a gun not to own, plus it works in my 3" 629s holsters...

I want one!

I carry a 3" 629 everyday, so I wouldn't have a problem carrying it. I use a Don Hume H715M carried AIWB.

Like uncleted327 I bought a 627 PC and a 586 L Comp. Thinking I would use one of the 2 for a CCW. Well still haven't decided, and even got a S&W 9mm Pro to add to pile. All great guns but my internal debate is revolver vs. semi. As of now I'm leaning toward the semi, of the revolvers for CCW I would go with the 586 L Comp.

Like uncleted said the grips are too small for the gun. These give you a much better grasp. You'll need it for full .357 loads. It is more fun to shoot now.
627.jpg

Another great choice, BUT that tritium front site sucks. Too small and hard to see. It appears to be a universal complaint from owners. C'mon S&W you can do better at this price point. Check out Yankee Marshall's upgrades to his 586L. Can't go wrong with this one after replacing the front sight.
586.jpg

Finally. I really like this one but have only put 50 rounds through it with no problems. Have had some issues with the mag failing to seat. But it shoots accurately, fits my dainty hands well, and would even be a decent IWB. The other 2 are definitely OWB, at least for me. I have enough going on IWB without adding a gun.

Good luck. Half the fun is the search.

I have had mine since they came out 18+ years ago

At the moment I have one in 357 Magnum and two in 41 Magnum. A close buddy of mine bought my other 627PDR just before Bloodwork came out

I always use a real belt when when carrying a firearm. I used the Factory offered speed scabbard, which I think was made by DeSantis for Smith and Wesson

Truthfully, I stopped carrying this firearm when the Night Guard series of snub nosed revolvers was released.

I own and occasionally carry a 657PC, which I first tried in a lobo pancake. Unfortunately the barrel was too short to hold the gun vertical so the weight of the gun would cant outwards a little and I didn't like it.

I have pocket carried it in 5.11 tactical pants, which is possible but not as comfortable as having it on a belt.

I switched to AIWB and that was MUCH more comfortable. Its actually the most comfortable AIWB gun that I own, and that includes a 649, 686 3", and glock 26 all carried in the same method.

The reason being is that the grip of a revolver curves enough to not stab me in the stomach when I bend over (unlike the glock), but the short barrel of the 657 lets me completely bend over with getting poked in the leg/other parts (the 686 will stab my leg with its slightly longer barrel).

The J-frame holsters that I have hold the gun up too high so the grip can jab me, whereas N-frame holsters seem to drop the cylinder a bit lower which for my body is just right.

*Disclaimer* I'm a medic, so even if I plain clothes it to a seen from daily life to help out, complete range of motion is the most important thing for me in a carry rig.

Good thread Nalapombu, I have been wanting a 627 or 586L or 686+ for some time now. But I want to shoot them before dropping the money.

My hunch is the 586L comp may fit my needs best.

Hand fit wise, the L frame x86 models seem to just fit better than the chunky N-frame models. But there is just something so cool about that massive little bloodwork package.

Default 627,657 and 629 UDR

I was lucky to have two of the 627’s one fluted one not. I carried the fluted for a time then went the black plastic. Now they are going to limit the rounds we are allowed to carry so back to the 627 UDR. Secret is a good belt and holster with N frame carry. I did change the grips the PAC Compacts. Cheers Frank Jr.

I carry it rarely. I like the extra ammo but not the sight radius. I have no problem carrying N-frames, and a 4" 29-10 is common, as is a 327 TRR8. I've had it about 10 years.

I experimented with ammo, settling on .38-Special +P. That way I can readily control the gun with the original small grips.

I carry it in an Uncle Mike's belt slide, a Don Hume tunnel holster or a custom floral-carved leather one made for a 4" barrel.

I like 4" barrels much better, and carry a Python, 586 and 686 regularly. Sometimes a 19 or a 66.

Thanks all for your contributions. Some gorgeous pistolas in this thread for sure.

I too really like the 596 L-Comp. I have been wanting to trade my M65 3-inch towards one, but haven't found a deal yet. I really like my 65 with the 3 inch, but I think I'd like the 586 L-Comp more. I know I'd have to pay some boot, but I'm cool with that as long as it's a fair deal.

So many wonderful and beautiful S&W revolvers out there. The problem is that my checkbook isn't FAT enough.

Did I mention that I'd also love to have a model 27 with 3 1/2 inch barrel? Talk about a breathtaking revolver.....that one is IT!!

Thanks again everyone.

I carried mine in a Galco shoulder holster for awhile. I, too, had trouble with belt holsters canting outward. I found that I needed a larger coat to carry it under.
I retired and now pocket carry a .380! :-)

I think you and I have the same tastes in guns. It only takes time and money. BTW there was a 586 L comp for sale in the classifieds. Still listed, but I don’t know if it’s sold. The listers name is huckleberryhound22. FWIW I bought my 586 L comp, and 27-2 3 1/2 off the forum classifieds.
