I've Googled the G key off my keyboard trying to get an experienced opinion on a rubber or other softer-than-wood grip for my wife's new Model 60 Pro series that will cover the backstrap and be otherwise small enough in profile to accommodate her small hands. The gun is new, but she's shot it enough with Remington bulk pack .38 (130 gr. @ 790 fps) to know that after 30 or 40 rounds the recoil begins to affect her shooting.

I've gotten lots of ideas on what would work for my larger guy hands from posts on this site, but can't see an answer to my specific question.

have you looked at the Hogue Tamer. I just put them on my 640 but have not had an opportunity to shoot it yet.

start reloading with 95g bullets, if you load REALLY light (400-600 FPS), then DO NOT shoot steel targets.

I'll second this. Covered backstrap, moderately soft rubber, slim, but with a full 3-finger grip. Give them a try.

Another option would be the Taurus 3-finger grips which are shown below (with the Hogue J-frames).

They make them for the M85/M68 sized pistols and they require only a very slight modification to fit a J-frame. They are also available in a 2-finger boot grip style that also covers the backstrap.

The standard rubber J-frame "combat" grip should accommodate small hands and is very comfortable.

The Hogue Tamer only works with Centennial frames and the OP is looking for grips for a model 60. Also the Tamers greatly increase trigger reach and I don't think they reduce recoil at all from my experience. I much prefer the newer Hogue Monogrip for a 3" J frame, although you have to change the stock pin.

If you are a Pachmayr fan, go for the smaller Compac Pro over the Diamond Pro. I prefer the Hogue because there are no issues with fitting/gaps/alignment.

I'm not sure which grip you are referring to, but unless I am mistaken this is the one they call the Tamer - at least that is what comes up on a search for "Hogue Tamer J Frame". Same one in my picture posted above.

You are correct that there is a different model specifically for the Centennial.

If you look at the Amazon link you provided it says and shows the Hogue Monogrip which is what I recommended. The Monogrip is not the same as the Tamer.
The Hogue Tamer only fits the Centennial frame and the polymer BG38 frame.
I've owned and used each model of Hogue rubber J frame grips and I know this to be correct. If you don't believe me check Hogue's website.

These are the factory grips on air weight 32 Magnums, and are both small and concealable, and soft enough to be very comfortable to shoot quite a bit.

Out of all the grips I’ve tried, the Hogue Tamer has good cushion for Recoil but, it’s not as fat as the Pachmayr Compacts. The stock Boot Grips are ok for a box or less. I also have a index finger that will not extend all the way. With the Tamer the J-Frame fits my hand good with no trouble reaching the trigger.

While I cannot speak for anyone else's wife... I can say that my 5'10' 150lb wifey in good shape with small hands likes the pictured combo as much as I like it... Look at my screen name... It just works!

OK, then I guess I must be mistaken about the one I posted being the "Tamer" model. I've always seen/heard of the one with the plastic cap at the bottom of the grip as being the "Tamer" model.

So then according to your info I guess what I am also recommending is the Monogrip model rather than the Tamer.

OP, what you want is the Hogue Monogrip for the J-frame. The same one I provided an Amazon link for.

I see why it can be confusing. The old Hogue Monogrip didn't have the plastic part at the bottom like the new Hogue Monogrip and the Tamer have. It also has the speedloader cut on both sides now and you have to replace the stock pin. I like the new design much better.

I'm also a petite woman with small hands that carries J frames. I alternate between the 60 and the 640 Pro for EDC. My 60 Pro isn't currently on my permit. For me, the secret to controlling recoil is gripping the gun really tightly. In order to achieve that tight grip, I need rubber grips that allow me to grip the gun with my entire hand - neither the bantam or wood grips that come on the 640 Pro & the 60 Pro work for me.

The grip that works the best for me is the one that comes stock on the 60. In #6 above, Telecaster posted a picture of them - the "combat grips". Altho they aren't on the S&W website any longer, you can call in an order. The gentleman that took my order knew exactly what I was asking for - even knew the model # by heart because he gets so many requests for them.

I put them on all my J frames. I generally don't shoot more than 50 rds from my J frames before moving on to my 686s, but I get much better groups using these grips and they don't bother my arthritic hands. As a bonus, because the combat grips are curved, they tuck under my rib cage quite well with a IWB holster.

Here's a comparison shot of the Tamer on an M&P 340 (Centennial) vs the Monogrip on a 360PD.

The Tamer doesn't work on revolvers with exposed hammers because it will not allow the hammer to go all the way back into the cocked position.

The Monogrip works on Centennial models, but it's short of the top of the back strap. The Tamer solves that deficiency.
