I've seen reference to them here off and on. Try searching for "Model 36 target." There are several posted on this thread:
M36 Target
I'd love to own one, but have not yet had the opportunity.

It's the product code 101549. Google searching that number along with some other terms might turn up some stuff.

The 36-6 with the full lug and target version, i.e. adjustable sights, was made in 1989.
I assume you've held this in your hand but if not my impression of this revolver was positive. If you have small to medium sized hands this would make a really nice/comfortable .38 special revolver for plinking or target shooting. These must be a bit uncommon as I've seen only one in person.

I picked one up earlier this year. Supposedly fairly rare, I've heard around 600 made, though others claim more.

Re: 36-6
Per our forum, 615 made. Bought one NIB when I encountered one at my then LGS. The finish is more easily worn than traditional blue. Smith released the 60-4 (same revolver in stainless. (Which I feel would be the perfect hiking gun. Smith has "upgraded" the gun to a .357 mag w/ IL. I have no desire to shoot .357 in a J frame. Would love to find one of the 60-4, but haven't seen one for years. Small frame 3" really float my boat for the perfect marriage of compactness and sight radius. Regardless of caliber or mfg

Here's an excerpt from one of Roy Jinks' letters related to the Model 36-6.
The company made quite a number of oddball Chiefs in 1989. I understand the desire to get rid of the Hogues, but they were original. I like the Combat grips of the era -- like the ones that came on the limited run of DAO Chiefs that year.
Neat little Chiefs you're getting. Enjoy.

I have enjoyed mine. Came with the rubber grips, which I replaced with J Round/Square target grips. They make it look like a baby 586.
As noted before, it has a fraternal twin the Model 60-4.

I’d like to get a set of those original combats for my 36-2 DAO but they run almost as much as I paid for it in the first place.

It is scary how such a rare gun found its way over the big pond to Switzerland.
This Februray was a lucky month. I found finally a .32 S&W Wadcutter FAS sportpistol. And with the same permission (yes we need such over here), I was able to buy a 36-6, which was on lay away since Christmas. (Hey, I was busy!!)
M29since14 reommended strongly to buy this J-frame. And as always I took his opinion serious. (OK, not always, but sometimes....or.....more rarely )
Sorry, no idea to add pictures without photobucket. I hope this upload-thing works.
Ain't she's a beauty?? ....the FAS .32 I mean.

I just recently resolved a "question" that has bugged me for some time. The 36-6 was listed in both the SCSW3 and SCSW4 as having been only 615 produced. There had some reports of up to 2000 produced. Roy did confirm to me that the 2000 is the correct number. So it isn't quite as rare as first believed, but even 2000 puts it a fairly scarce gun.
Still one of the best balanced best shooting carry guns. That and the 60-4. I'm not sure of the value, but I wouldn't sell mine for less than in the $700-$800 range, and NO, it is not for sale.

Re: 36-6
Exerpt from Roy's letter(see post #8) came as a surprise ! For years 615 was the accepted #. Even w/ the higher number what's the current market value for one w/ box and docs. Haven't seen one sold so I have no idea. Not selling mine, just asking out of curiosity.

I gave $600 for mine 3 months ago from a local seller, but that’s probably a little low. He was getting rid of his late fathers guns and I don’t think he realized what he had. I would say somewhere in the $800-$900 range to the right buyer would probably be more realistic for a nice one with box and docs. They are very nice revolvers. My only dislike is the matte finish. It does make them unique, but personal preference would be a standard bluing.

I have had a 36-6 since the early 1990s. It shoots great, but the finish is not very durable. I found the original Hogue Rubber Monogrip to be spongy. I replaced mine with a set of wooden monogrips. Buy it and you will never regret it.

These are so cute
This one was purchased new by a Federal Probation Officer in South Florida I used to do the actions on many of their Officer's revolvers.
In 1994 she was forced to migrate to a 357 Magnum. The gun shop offered her $140 on trade toward a 3" Model 65
She sold it to me for the $140 complete in the box
Naturally I also took care of the action on the Model 65 for no charge

A lot of knowledgeable people on here! Thanks all, I really appreciate it. Makes me want this little gun more than my natural inclination towards prelock Smith's already pushed me. And I agree, that's gonna make a great winter carry gun.

Accuracy
The seller gave me the gun and 100 rounds of .38 Special FMJ from Fiocchi for the $580.-. The Fiocchi ain't bad ammo. But for the first test was it clear to use my own ammo. Since many many years are Accurate-powders my brand. I use Solo 1000 and AA#2 for the Wadcutters.
The rubbergrip is an aesthetical challenge, I'd say. But it sits very good in my hand.
I know that some snobs here would replace them with expensive specially made wooden Nill-Grips for that kind of J-frames, but I haven't the chance for such.... . What would you say, M29since14???😁😁

S&W has made this style gun in stainless steel for years. Here is my 60-10 with 3" full lug barrel in .357 Mag:
Sorry for the ****** picture, but this was originally to show the holster. I believe they may still be making a version, but now it has the internal lock.

Ever since Pachmayr came out with the “Presentation” rubber grip (and what a name for it! ), these ugly monstrosities have been the bane of my revolver shooting existence. They work wonderfully and they actually do improve my shooting in every case I have tried them, but they look awful - no matter who makes them and no matter what model. Very frustrating!
But returning to the subject of the OP, these really are marvelous little guns, whether they be the carbon-steel 36-6 or the stainless versions, 60-4, -10, and so on. They are just the right size and weight for just about anything outdoors that might make you wish to take a small revolver along. I’ve taken my 60-4 on several canoe/kayak trips and it’s perfect, save for the ammo being a bit bulky. But that is manageable, and if it is not for some reason, one can always fall back on his old trusty Model 51 (or 651).
I particularly like the bead-blasted finish of the 36-6 and was looking for one, and then along came the 60-4, which alleviated my concern about having a polished-blue finish, as on the 51, on a boondocking gun. All in all, you can’t go wrong with these models, carbon or stainless. Now... if only S&W had made a similar version in .32 Magnum!

My 36-2 DAO came with the Combats, and I stumbled upon the pair on my 36-6 at the Riverton gun show last year for $50.

A full underlug, 3" barrel, adjustable sight, 6 shot 327 fed mag would seriously result in the thinning of my collection. Because that gun would be so perfect (for me) that I wouldn't need to hold onto some other guns I've collected.

I’m sorry the blue on the 36-6 seems to be a little delicate, since if there was ever a gun that was meant to be carried a lot, this is it. I guess S&W decided to alleviate the problem with the stainless Model 60-4. I agree with those above that the only further improvement would be the exact same gun in 327 FM to go with it. My Model 60-4 is definitely an all-time favorite. OTOH a 3” full lug Model 63 would probably be overkill, but I’d probably spring for one of those too if it came without the reshaped frame for the IL. “Why? Because it’s just the right thing to do.”

If I ever come across a 36-6 I will buy it as a companion to my 60-4, which is in all truth probably the most practical, useful gun i own. I have no desire for a .357 version, .38+P is more than plenty for this gun and for most real-world purposes. My favorite load in mine is my own 158 gr cast SWC over 700X at a level that is in the lower +P range. Comfortable to shoot, accurate, and powerful enough for most needs.
