First S&W Revolver
Just picked up a 686-6 Plus with 4" barrel. Last revolver I had was a Hi Standard I bought in the mid 60's. Going to use this for competition. Hope to get the range tomorrow, barring rain, to test it out. The stainless steel finish sure makes it stand out!!!

bulova,
you made a great choice! The 686 revolvers are very practical and shootable guns. I have an older 686 that I bought new at the Indy 500 gun show for $360 with taxes around 1995 and have enjoyed ever ince, even though the stainless front sight in harder to see for me now than it was 23 years ago.

Your 686 is a wonderful gun, but I'm curious as to what kind of competition? The seven shot guns aren't generally thought of as useful for most gun games. IDPA restricts revolvers to six rounds. You can use your plus, but you will have to leave one chamber empty, which means proper indexing on on-the-clock reloads. USPSA allows 8 rounds of minor or 6 rounds of major. You can load 7 rounds of .357 (major) but you can only shoot six of them. You'd get eaten alive by the .45 ACP revolvers. ICORE, again 6 or 8 rounds. Steel maybe. Regardless, I hope you have fun with your new gun. If you feel that you want to shoot IDPA, USPSA or ICORE, your 7-shot can easily be converted to a 6- shot with a new cylinder and hand. Have fun.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

I got the Plus model because it was a great deal. Our local club has Plates competition where you shoot 22, center fire and revolver. Max is 6 rounds and yes, I need to make sure I don't start on an empty chamber!!! I use a Sig M11-A1 or Kimber Team Match in IDPA.

Went to the range this evening. Only had time to put a box of 50, 38spl thru before it started to rain!! Shot really smooth. Less recoil then my 1911's. Hope to take to the Plates shoot (revolver portion) Wednesday if it does not rain. Will also shoot my Victory (22 portion)and probably my Sig M11-A1 (production portion). Cost is $5 per gun and might even win a few bucks (if noone else shows up!!!

Smith revolvers are very dangerous. They breed in the safe like rabbits.
I bet we all started with only one, but now.....

My only 686, at this time is a 5" Pro Series. Got rid of my -3, 6" at the last gun show. Really like this 1! (still have a 586, 4" no dash)
YOU WILL WANT MORE!!! Bob

Sounds like a problem with rabbits like wife is having in the yard. The bunnies are eating all of her flowers!!! Being in the city, I can't use the 686 to reduce the herd!!!

Discovered a problem with the 686 Plus at a match last evening. It does not have a provision for moon clips!! Spoke to S&W today and they confirmed by S/N, the cylinder is not machined to accept. Any suggestions on who could do the work if I wanted it done?
Thanks!!

TK Custom or Pinnacle Custom Revolver can machine your cylinder for moon clips.
