Shot A Couple Of The Little .44's Today
Rossi mdl. 720 and plain old 696. Bought both when they were first announced. The Rossi preceeded the 696 by several years.

And what were your comparative impressions? I have several N frames in 44 caliber, ( my favorite) but no L frames.

I have the same Smith in 41 Magnum. I see you switched to the "kidney" thumblatch - helps?

The 696 no dash came that way from the factory.

I bought the Rossi about 20 years ago. Kept a round count to 740 rds. to see when it would break.......It didn't. Still shooting it. Its a little smaller than the 696.

I have a Rossi 720, liked it so I got the similar models in .22lr and .22mag (515 and 513 models I think). Great little kit guns with very good triggers (much better than my Ruger SP101 .22 of J frame .22's). Very under rated guns.

I really like that Smith OP! .44caliber is the best caliber! In fact, I've just locked myself into a model 24, Lew Horton 3" barreled blued beauty... I can't wait to have it in at my FFL. I like .44Spec so much I'm going to tailor a separate reloading section/station press dedicated to just loading my favorite .44Special loads; from mild to semi-wild. Thanks for posting OP!

Yup. I only have one - a 971 (357 magnum) with a 2-3/4" barrel.
A buddy shot it and first thing out of his mouth was
"Wow, that's a ROSSI? Who did the trigger job?"
He couldn't believe it when I told him it hadn't had one.

The Interarms Rossi revolvers were quite good. I really like the chunky barrel rib and excellent sights on my Rossi 515 (.22 mag). At 30-oz it is a little heavier than most kit guns but the extra weight is in the barrel which really steadies things down for accurate shooting.

I shot my 629 while up at our family/shared Mountain Home in Highlands NC yesterday. I found a stash of miniature "Diet-Coke" cans (unopened of course), and thought, nobody is going to drink this ****. So outside they went with me into the ravine. I marked off 25 yards and wedged 6 cans in between some half rotted trees; loaded the 3" Smith with a cylinder of Underwood's, 255grain "Keith" Hard-Cast in .44Special. Wow, what an accurate and very pleasant load to shoot. But at $1 a pill delivered to the door... I'm going to try and mimic this lovely loading on my Dillon press!

I have been a fan of the .44 Special for longer than most of you have been alive. The more I used it the better I liked it, both "On the Range and in the Field".
My shortest piece is my 624 with 4" barrel. I got both the 4" and 6.5" 624's right after Skeeter Skelton talked S&W into introducing them.
I cast all my own bullets for several calibers. My most used is a 250 gr. Keith (Mihec #503 H&G these days) but a cast bullet I am very fond of is the Group Buy 200 gr. W/C:
This is a superbly accurate bullet up to and including fifty yards. It offers light recoil and with that full diameter meplat, terrific terminal effect.
Using 5.0 grs. of Red Dot gives just under 900 fps. in .44 Special cases. 4.0 grs. makes a fine target load. It is a terrific load and would be my choice for a self defense load, particularly in a short, light handgun (at the 5.0 gr. level).
FWIW
