Default Grips for a 17-6

I am trying to determine what grips were on a model 17-6. The box says it has CS (combat Stocks) but I goggled combat stocks and came up with a lot of different stocks. Also, I wasn't able to find the serial number in the SCSW my s/n is BHN7xxx and I couldn't find BHN listed. I know they were made from 1990 thru 1994. The stocks are full target but are date stamped 1998 so I know hey aren't the correct stocks. Any help would be appreciated.

The 17-6 was a transitional model meaning that some were non full lug barrels and shipped with magna stocks, the majority were full lug shipped with combat stocks like these.

I believe you or your source is mistaken that a 17-6 started in 1990. My 17-6 is a BBJ-xxxx serial number and it was purchased brand new in November of 1989. Mine is an earlier dash-6, it does not have the full lug barrel nor the very pricey and gorgeous combat stocks as shown on the revolvers in post #2. My revolver came with the same large stocks that the Model 686 no-dash through at least the 686-4 shipped with -- I want to say that they are named "Goncalo Alves Target" but I may be mistaken with that moniker.

Stocks on a revolver with an earlier date than the revolver itself is not only possible, it seems likely (to me anyway.)

If your 17-6 has the standard target barrel like a K-38 Masterpiece Model 14, then you likely have the same stocks as me. If your 17-6 has the full lug barrel like the revolvers in post#2, then it probably came with the same stocks as in the photo.

The SCSW said on page 216 that product code 100538 was made from 1990-1994. I have a 17-5 with the type of grips in post #2 and was wondering what grips it should have since I don't have a box and don't know the product codes.

This one shipped in May, 1989 per Mr. Jinks. I have fingers like Italian sausages and finger groove stocks never work for me. I have kept the originals in the box and replaced them with the nice set of rosewood stocks from an ebay vendor in Thailand.

I was lucky the previous owner had the combat grips that came on the gun and I got them today and put on the pistol, looks a lot better and feels good. Thanks for the input on the grips without seeing pictures I wouldn't have been able to get the correct grips.

Wow, did he give them to you well after the sale?

Haha, that's two guys that probably aren't aware of the market for those stocks. The market is... ummm, compelling.

This is a victory for you.

Nice that you got the original combat grips back.

I love those grips, I have them on my 17-6, 586-1, 66-3, 686-4 and 29-5 Classic Hunter. Wish I could find another pair for N frame for my 629-2 Classic Hunter. But prices are approaching $ 400, so the Hogue will have to do.

Bought both my 17-6s used with factory combats. They look great, but for me there are better options for actual use.
