Default 3" Full lug 357 guidance

So I recently saw a pic of the S&W Model 19 Carry Comp, w/ 3" barrel and would absolutely love to own one! The price is going to put that on hold for the moment. I got to wondering if there might already be a similar 3" full lug .357 already out that I might be able to find pre-owned.

So far I've seen the 686+ 3" and with the un-fluted cylinder, oh man, is that tempting!
But I'm really digging the darker tone of carry component.

I saw 586 PC 3", listed as "Super rare" - that's pretty close, but again, price might be put it out of my budget

Here are my questions:
1. Did they ever make a standard 586 3"?

2. How much different is shooting 3" vs a 4" ?

3. Are there any other darker tone 357 models to consider?

I'm rather new to the revolver side of life..still soaking up knowlege with every post, and perusal of the forum.

Mine are both fun shooters, but since I carry the 3" sometimes, it's more useful to me.

I come from a background where firearms were mostly unavailable, and when I take other novices from that same background to the range, they always prefer, and shoot, the 4" better.

They both can digest piles of magnum rounds without punishing the shooter.

My eldest granddaughter with my 4" 686-6 Plus at the range recently.

The 3" ported guns have much less muzzle flip than the 4" standard barrel when shooting full power ammunition. However a 3" and 4" standard barrel will feel very similar.

As to choices . . . .

There is always the Model 586 L-comp

There is also the Model 66 F-comp. I know you said dark complexion

Or how about the Model 60 Small Hunter?

I think it is cute

I will be adding a Model 19 Carry Comp soon

CCG, you say you're fairly new to the revolver side, so you may or may not be familiar with ported guns. If not, I'd try to use one before deciding to purchase a ported revolver. Some people love them, some don't care one way or another, and some people like me don't care for them at all; especially a short-barreled .357.

I can't say I've shot a ported revolver, but pretty sure I've shot one or two other ported semi's. I'll have to see if any of the local indoor ranges have a revolver I could try out. I've shot my dads 686 4" clone, and like the feel of it.

There were a small number of 3" model 586 (-4s) made in the mid-'90s, but if a current 19 Carry Comp is out of your price range one of those will be too, by a factor of about 3-400% . Good luck in your search.

The 3-inch 7-shot M586-7 L-Comp is in current production. Just order product code 170170. You can find them for less than list.

Performance Center Model 586 L-Comp

Default Have you checked out used guns..

..like on Gunbroker?

I see you can pick up a 6" for about $700. I wonder how much it would cost to get the barrel cut down?

FWIW; I had a 3" 586.... nice gun but never got carried.....

a 2 1/2 inch 19 or 3inch 66 was better for concealed carry (carried a lot but never shot in anger)

my 4 inch round butt, stainless 686 was better for general utility and woods carry..... the extra inch of barrel added sight radius and FPS with no practical down side.

A long time ago I carried a mod 66 4" and as I remember it was heavy.
A lighter J frame works better for me.
That said I have several 686's and like them all.
