Default New to Smith/Revolvers Looking for 627 Advice

Haven't been shooting long but I've caught the bug.

My first purchase was a 9mm semi that was a decent entry level competition pistol and after shooting a bit and learning more I ended up... buying something nicer.

So now I'm really looking at getting a .357 revolver. I don't know if I'll compete with it but I know I'll be shooting it a ton at the range.

I'm leaning heavy toward the N-frames because the 686 felt nice to shoot but it was a little small for my hands.
  1. If I go with buy-once, cry-once, it looks like the Performance Center V-Comp is the premier options but it's also $1300.
  2. In the middle, the Performance Center 5" for $1050.
  3. On the low end, the 627 Pro 4" is only $800.

Is the V-Comp worth the price?
Will I regret going with a lower version? or shorter barrel?
Should I try to look for something used, or another older model?

I have the Pro 4” and absolutely love it. I bought i over the performance center because not only did I know I was going to replace the grips and have the action redone by my local gunsmith, I also much prefer the 4” barrel to the 5” on the PC.

Just a thought, why not look for a nice lightly used Model 28? If you want prettier, an older Model 27. N frame guns that are built to shoot. Just a thought

Having owned several 627s I have one question, if you are considering using the gun for competition which sport do you prefer? For USPSA an 8 shot seems to be the way to go. I and my shooting buddies find we are more accurate with longer barrels. I am currently converting a 5" gun to 6 1/2". The V comp is great if you prefer a heaver gun, you will find the comp does little to eliminate muzzle rise when fired. If you are interested in ICORE the 627s and 929s rule Limited and a 625 or 610 are top choices for limited 6.

USPSA is what I was thinking. Never been to an ICORE event but I guess that's a possibility too.

If you could only have one 627 which would you get? or would you get a different model?

My plan is to only get one revolver this year so I want it to be the right one. I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm going to be paying $1000+ regardless of my choice so now I just need to know if the V Comp is worth it over say the TTR8 or the 627 PC.

Also, do you think all of these choices will need a trigger job and other work right away or can they be semi-competitive out of the box? Honestly don't know a ton about revolvers but it sounds like they take a lot of tinkering to get just right.

Recently purchased the 4" bbl 627 Pro Series (SKU 178014). Magnificent beyond words. I actually gasped when I opened the box at my range/FFL. Not terribly fond of the OEM Hogue grips, but not in a hurry to change them as the gun handles well with them. Fine DA trigger pull. .004" barrel/cylinder gap. Multiple pie plate targets with full magnum loads are a breeze. Two issues: it won't fit in my pocket and I only have one of them ...

Welcome to the Forum

A little small for your hands should not rule out a model. Unlike a semi-auto, a change of grips on a revovler can change the personality of how the firearm feels and handles.

OK, I have been a HUGE fan of the 8 shot, 357 Magnum model 27/327/627 family of revolvers since they wee introduced in 1996

I adopted them VERY early. In fact, the one pictured on the top left is the 27th production revolver manufactured while the one on the top right is the 357th gun

This original introduction design was very cool at the time and was extremely limited.

The 627 V-comp has been manufactured in both 3" and 5" barrel lengths. You do not mention which one you are looking at. Most of us would guess it is the 5" that has caught your eye

You will find that the V-comp works very well to reduce muzzle climb when firing full power loadings that generate large amounts of propellant gas.

Since many folks that compete use reduced loads, the V-comp effectiveness is also reduced. The actual V-comp may be removed from the front of the firearm and a factory supplied false muzzle put in it's place if you so desire.

I like the V-comp for Bowling Pin Matches where full power ammunition can be a plus when trying to remove a pin from the table.

For many of the fast moving games, the Scandium framed Model 327s have quite a following. The Model 327 TRR8 is a 8 shot, 5" N-frame that weighs in like a 4" K-frame. It swings from target to target very smoothly and does not have that extra mass of the 627 that is harder to slow down at the end of the swing.

Also the tensioned, multi-piece barrel design of the 327 family of revolvers provides for some astonishing accuracy, the likes of which we have not seen since the heyday of the Dan Wessons of long ago

The 627 Pro is a great value when entering into the world of 8 shot 357 Magnums, however there is only a single configuration to choose from. If a 4" gun suits your needs, the Pro is the way to go

The 357 Magnum model 27/327/627 family of revolvers offers in excess of two dozen different configurations. On the small end there are 3 different snubbbies. Like this cute 2", pug nosed Model 327

To the massive 627 Heavy Hunter on the other end of the Family tree.
This one will keep you on target even with the heaviest recoiling hunting loads
and LOTS of choices in between

My first revolver was a 28, and I sold it a long time ago. I have a new one bought in the want to sell forum on this site, shipping today. There is a beauty there now for sale. The 28 has a dull finish, and is not real pretty. A poor man's model 27. Both of these will hold more value over time. Especially a well maintained 27. Again, just a thought, and they are plentiful both as collector pieces and/or good used shooter grade

I shoot ICORE and i have both a 627pc 5 inch and a 627pro 4 inch. Love both of them. Several of my friends who shoot ICORE have the 327/trr8 and a couple have the vcomp. Unless you’re doing heavy 357 mag the comp on the vcomp doesn’t really have an effect. The vcomp is a very nice gun but most folks agree that you are better off saving the money by buying a 627pc and using the savings to have a good gunsmith do some trigger work.
One friend has a trr8 that he has had a trigger job done and magnaported. It’s really nice, but he told me that he wishes he got the 627pc because even though it is ported the lighter weight is still a detriment to recoil control. Porting is more helpful only with really heavy loads.
On the 929, there have been no end of problems with the titanium cylinder. Some guys are still using them, but they appear to be on the decline.
Most folks are coming back to the tried and true 627pc. If you’re not in love with the 627 pc, then i would go with the vcomp.

Thanks, this is sort of what I was wondering. If the TTR8 and the V-Comp were more cosmetically different than actually a much superior gun.

I have 3 of the models you are asking about, the 627 Pro, the 627 PC and the TRR8. I have had them all for years and I like them all. But the one that makes it into the range bag the most and therefore that I have shot the most by far is the 627 Pro. Mine came from the factory with a wonderful trigger which has only gotten better after thousands of rounds. If I could only keep one, it would be the Pro.

Incidentally, one of my range buddies had the VComp and I shot it on several occasions. I didn’t feel it was anything special. My advice is save your money.

Here’s a couple pictures of my Pro and PC. I don’t seem to have a picture of my TRR8.

I know that certain guns speak to certain people...and that a firearm either has that "something" or it doesn't...

For me, the 627 Pro has that something. It's just a joy to shoot, and so well balanced in my hand. I literally have zero complaints about the thing.

I bought the 5" V-Comp 4 weeks ago and probably ran about 400 rounds through it and I can honestly say it's a pleasure to shoot. I also have a model 627 44 mag with the 6.5" barrel and it's also a great revolver but not in the same class as the V-Comp. Good luck with whatever you decide and I'm sure you will be smiling on the way home from shooting it. Just so you know I'm not all S&W, I also have a Sig, Rugers, Beretta, Sako etc.

That's a model 629 classic not 627.

I've had my 627 Pro 4" for a little over 2 years and at a guess, would say I've run 2000+ rounds through it, mostly 357. Whenever I go to the range with a 357, it will be one of them that I bring. It's a fun gun to shoot and accurate and the trigger on it is as good as any of my older model 27's in single or double action. The only thing I don't like too much about it is the slab sided barrel. I prefer the traditional style barrels such as a model 27 or 28 wear, but that doesn't detract from the shooting experience with it.

I went with the Pro. Fantastic gun, love it. Put a Leupold Delta Point on mine. Smith & Wesson mount, screws right into existing holes
