686 Day Guard
For the longest time I’ve wanted a model 386 Night Guard. I'm talking about this one below (not my picture).
When they were first released I thought they were a bit too pricey for me, and well now they’re hard find. So I present to you the 686 Day Guard. A lightly polished daytime version of the Night Guard. Although it keeps watch both day and night … I just don’t tell that to the 386 owners.
The 686 Day Guard has the same u-notch rear sight and XS tritium front. Added are the classic thumb piece, Pachmayr grips, and lock plug (all purchased over the years from forum members here). This one sports a 3 inch barrel instead of 2 1/2. I am loving this revolver so much I don’t even want a Night Guard anymore.
Here’s the 357 Mag Day Guard with it’s 22 Mag little brother, the In-The-Shadow Guard. Can you tell I like 7 shot revolvers?

That's a sweet conversion project! Your hand will thank you too! Hey! You should market that.

That looks great. Did you go with the XS "Standard" or "Big" dot?

Something S&W should have made/still should make. I can even tolerate the looks of the full lug barrel as you have done it.

It's just the standard one. My eyes are still young enough to not need the Big Dot yet, lol.

Would you be kind enough to post the XS product SKU for the one you bought. I want to make sure I order the correct one. Thanks

Smith & Wesson should make more scandium/aluminum alloy L-frames.

Sorry I don't have that. Purchased sight used. It didn't come in any sort of packaging.

It's quite good between 5-15 yds. I went through different front/rear sight combos with this revolver and the tritium dot on u-notch has been my favorite. My least favorite were the adjustable rear and red ramp that were factory. I think S&W made the ramp on mine a bit higher which use to cause all sorts of low shots, even with the rear sight up all the way.

First I see the thread about the 681 cut down to a 3 inch barrel length and just happen to find a 681 at a great price on the web.
Now this!

That rear fixed sight can be purchased from the Cylinder and Slide Company last time I checked, as can diffferent matching front sights as well. The rear sight fits exactly where the rear adjustable sights fit, at least on certain models, so it's easy to install. The C&S website has all the info you need to get the right one for your gun. I own two or three of them and like them very much. But I've had them for a pretty long while and have not looked at the C&S website for a long time. Great sights in my book!
PS: OP, you have a nice revolver there! I happen to own a 386 SCS Night Guard. Bought it in 2008. It is a dandy! So is yours!
