Default Model 60 Pro gets a red-dot sight

I really like shooting the little critter with light cast loads but ancient eyes have trouble with the iron sights -- Ah, much more enjoyable hitting the bullseye with the red dot.

Had to drill/tap two 6-48 holes, easy in the mill.

Low profile

A good setup for me

Wasn't expecting that. Thought it would just be a blade change. I think that is the first I have seen this on a J frame.

Nice work .

Talking

revolver ph;
Having been plagued with vision problems for most of my adult life, I can truly appreciate the use of the Red Dot sight. After losing the central vision of my right eye, several years ago, a friend suggested I go to the Red Dot sight. At the time, I ended up with a Simmons Red Dot sight. Shortly after, I bought a half dozen of them on close out for very reasonable prices and put them on nearly all of my revolvers.

Today, the reflex sight like yours really appeals to me. However, since the tube type are working well for me, I'll probably just keep what I have.

If I were still hunting small game, tho', I would certainly seriously consider a reflex (or two, or three(:>))

My 60-4 is still carrying the issue sights, but your post has me thinkin'...

The J critters just have the small forward D&T hole for the iron sight strap. Other differences from its big brothers: iron sight slot is narrower/deeper and the sight notch at the rear of the top strap is shallower/narrower/shorter. Those were easy mods to my standard (L, K, N and X frame) mount design.

I always have trepidation of drilling and tapping but starting with a #3 center drill, using a sharp drill bit and a new tap, taking time to get the gun held firm and level AND taking it slow has worked each time.

The base is my design and manufacture. I have been making mounts for the J frame's bigger brothers for about 2 years.

Raptor Engineering

Not sure if I should offer this base for sale as it requires D&T.

I should of recognized your name and avatar, I know about your Raptor Engineering base and even own a few. They are perfect. Best base design on the market.

I think you should sell a J-frame base. You could even make up a kit with drill bits and taps. Perhaps, even some kind of guide to help get the screw holes in the right place. Think of it as a product line extension. Offer it both ways. With and with out taps.

There are tens of thousands of little kit guns like yours owned by us old timers with bad eyes who would love to put dot sights on our kit guns.

The polling feature could be used here to see what interest there might be. I would want two or three right off the bat.

Seeing as how I've gone down this road and I'm a big fan of the Raptor bases, I'd say market it. There are a gazillion aftermarket parts where "gunsmith installation" is strongly advised.

Been awhile since I required their services but I'll bet there are many gunsmiths still charging $30 per hole. Considering the cost of the gun and a quality reflex, a $40 base and $60 installation seems reasonable if you really like the set-up.

Kernel,
Thank you for the kind words about our mounts.

Mike,
You are quite right about many mounting products requiring D&T.

When we get caught up with other tasks we will add the J-frame mount to our website.

More kudo's on the Raptor mount. I love how nice and low they fit and the smaller reflex sights are much easier to carry in a holster. Glad to see you are considering the J Frame.

I use the Raptor Mount with a Burris FF3 on a 629-4 Backpacker and 2 1/2" 686-4 to test my reloaded ammo.

I also drilled and tapped a 625-2 on a Bridgeport milling machine using instructions and dimensions supplied by revolver ph
