Default Bluing Question

I recently traded a 29-5. Other than my 28-2 it was my only Blued S&W. The finish was beautiful and glossy. I can’t remember if the previous older guns I had owned were as nice. My 28-2 is a more a matte black.

Will all older blued Smith in excellent condition have a similar finish as my 29-5? I want another blued Smith, but with my recent acquisition mode and our daughter beginning college this Fall I’d prefer not to spend 29 money.

Not sure of exact years, but if you go far enough back like in the 50's, you may see some standard blue examples that aren't so shiny. But for the 60's through present you'll find that beautiful glossy finish that you're looking for. The 28's were an exception with their utilitarian matte finish.

Your 28-2 was intentionally finished with less than a mirror polish and then completed in the matte, the reason was economics,to appeal to a wider market (ie: law enforcement etc) by making it more affordable than it's well received, highly polished and established predecessor, the model 27.

I have a Pre-Model 26 from 1957 with the special order "Bright Blue" finish. It is just as nice as the blued finish on my 27-2.

Please overlook the poor photography.
