Default I'm building my own "S&W EMEGENCY SURVIVAL TOOL KIT" What to add?

So I'm going to build my own kit. I bought a S&W Yellow X grip and a Yellow Hartigg Storm Case, and have a 629-4 3 " Backpacker for the pistol. I know the yellow kit is 460EX, but hey, it's just for fun. So rather than what's in the S&W kit, who needs space blankets and a Bear book???? I'm thinking, the gun, a knife, a multi tool, couple of speedloaders with ammo, a LED mini light, AND WHAT?????? Can't add too much, I bought the same size case as the original S&W Kit, a Hartigg Storm Case IM2100. THANKS!!!

Default Rod, brush and driver

You need a genuine Smith&Wesson loop end cleaning rod and a brush...as well as the knurled handle Smith&Wesson screwdriver.

A loud whistle. Often over looked. Very important, and can save your life. Many in distress loose their voice as they become dehydrated and weak. Hoarse from yelling. But they can still blow a whistle that can be heard over a half mile away.

Think you're gonna need a bigger box. my two suggestions would be a folding tree limb saw which you can find at Lowe's, and a small campers axe Fiskars brand at Lowe's also. Your box is now running out of room. By the way, the folding limb saw is manufactured under the Corona brand and is excellent on green wood but will get the job done with dry wood. I have one of their saws that cuts on the return stroke. Took down two trees 4" diameter yesterday with the one I have. Always keep a few extras around the house for emergencies. Survival kits should always be kept with you and everyone in your party should have one also. I have a kit set up in one of those cases that held night vision equipment. Came without any inserts but as the case splits evenly both top and bottom can hold a lot of supplies. For smaller stuff like toiletries good old freezer bags work well. Frank

Well -- since weapons are involved, some medical stuff. As a minimum, a military-style tourniquet and two 6" Israeli bandages.

Something to keep you dry, gather rain water, etc. - a light weight poncho or space blanket. Orange if you want it to double as a VS17 panel to signal for help.

A medium or large, high-quality folding knife, serrated -- such as a Spyderco Endura (or equivalent).

A hundred yards of 550 para cord -- that's your spare shoe laces, a snare to catch little wabbits, something to hold up your waterproof sheet, a tourniquet, rope to bundle firewood, etc.

Etc.

VERY GOOD SUGGESTION, KC. I WOULD ALSO ADD A SIGNAL MIRROR TO ATTRACT RESCUE AIRCRAFT, AND KEEP THE SPACE BLANKET, FOR WARMTH AND SHELTER FROM THE WEATHER.....

Would recommend packing Tylenol and ibuprofen over aspirin as aspirin is a major blood thinner. Not good if you have a bleeding injury.

Survival kit contents check: one .45-caliber automatic, two boxes ammunition, four days' concentrated emergency rations, one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills, one miniature combination "Rooshin" phrase book and Bible, one hundred dollars in rubles, one hundred dollars in gold, nine packs of chewing gum, one issue of prophylactics, three lipsticks, three pair of nylon stockings... Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff!

I'd have to ask, what emergency are you planning for? A box that small , I'm guessing stranded in your car and need to survive until the tow truck gets there?

You dismissed the space blanket and Bear book, yet added a knife, multi tool, LED light, so I'm guessing you're planning a urban kit. What is your plan? Scavenger? Travel light, take what you need- you don't need much more than what you have. Btw, do you plan on carrying that box in your hand, on your back( in a backpack) or what?

Already some good suggestions: Btw, keep the space blanket( small, light, good for alot of stuff) and Bear book ( something to read)- TP (1/2 roll, take out roll and make flat, put in locking sandwich bag), duct tape( again pull out 3" length, fold over and over- 10ft is plenty) pocket chainsaw, pain killer, I'd add Imodium AD, Life Straw, 2 knives, 2 LED lights and 2 Bics.

I'd carry that box inside a gray or black Backpack, along with a jacket, poncho, extra socks and 1 MRE.

I'd ditch the speedloaders and make room for a 50 round box of ammo instead.

So what emergency are you planning for (that that box would help)? Rural or urban? Self sufficient or scavenge? What's your skill set? Fitness level? Medical conditions? Alone or family?

Contents should suit your needs and location. Many good suggestions above. Case is what I wouldn't want, unless only used for storage. The weight of the case could be better used as contents. Lightweight, waterproof, small to medium backback. Good luck!

My survival kit would have
model 18, holster,lots of ammo.
Sturdy fixed blade knife, probably of 5160, tuff and easy to sharpen, sheath
Fire Piston
light aircraft cable
chunk of heavy mill plastic
Roll of heavy braided fishing line
hooks and a couple needles with eyes big enough for the line
all except 18 and knife, folded inside one of those large camp kit kettles with the frying pan lid

Fire piston is a small cylinder and plunger that lights tinder by compression. Simple, compact and it works easy.

Plastic over a hole makes a simple effective solar still to make clean water. Set pan in center of hole, spread plastic over the top, place small rock in center to cause it to dip over pan. Stick vegetation, saltwater, mud, dirty water, pee, anything with moisture in under edges into hole. Heat causes it to evaporate, then it will condense run to center and drip into pan.

roll of light aircraft cable. Snares, they hunt 24 hours a day 7 days a week. No need for lock clips, a small loop then a piece through it and the end through second piece will make it lock.

Talking COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES MUCH?

Getting into the prepper/survival/Zombie apocalypse zone. FOR SUCH, a vintage GI metal canteen with the cup & canvas cover with a pocket holds a bunch of stuff. PLUS ONE for Vaseline soaked cotton balls, a bic lighter, multi tool, folding camp saw, para cord, wire for snares etc, fish hooks, mono line, a sharpie writing implement, whistle, compass, boy scout manual. A life straw sounds nice. Flashlight & spare batteries??? Too heavy, when it gets dark stop moving until/if there is some moon light. CONSERVE as much energy as possible, you're gonna need it.

IF your goal is long term survival everything that has been mentioned and then some..... If you need assistance/rescue just three items. My son is a DPS Air Rescue helicopter pilot and his take was Personal Locator Beacon, cell phone, plenty of light sources. Good PLB's are capable of transmitting, who you are, where you are, medical history etc. Couple hundred bucks. Signal mirror can be seen from the air for miles. At night even the light from a cell phone can be seen from a great distance if the rescue crew is using NVG's. For ground rescue Kernel Crittenden is right on with the whistle. Make sure someone knows where you're going, when to expect your return and who to alert if you don't. Water is MUCH MORE important than food...you can go days without eating, not so water. Can't imagine a REAL long term survival situation but I guess all good Boy Scouts should be prepared.

How about a 6" barrel for that snubby 629? Better yet, swap it out for a 6" .357 magnum.

And a good .22

and a magnifying glass

Willow bark tea will relieve pain as it has same compound as aspirin. But, taking up space for minor pain isn't going to happen with me in a survival pack.

But, then I don't have a bug out plan, I do have a bug off plan. LOL

If I was going off in the the wilds for a month or so and could only take say 20# of gear my list above would be in it. If I had room, I would add a piece of gill net though, it will also catch small animals, birds etc. I can live through minor pain, can't live without water and food.

A good knife, I mean GOOD knife, not that it means expensive. If you have room, a 4 inch fixed knife blade would be ideal, the biggest I like is my US Air Force Survival knife but a Buck 110 is good too, the only folding knife I would use for it.
Matches, UCO strike anywhere variety, a ferro rod, some cottonballs soaked in vasoline, a small first aid kit, some water tablets to purify water. Some fishing line, a few hooks and a couple split shot sinkers.
An emergency blanket, some rope, jute cord works good. A couple of black trash bags, the big ones, they make a halfway decent poncho if need be.
A compass, preferably two.
A small multi-tool.
I can carry a pretty decent sized emergency kit in my shoulder bag or even in a pouch on my rifle. You don't need a huge box, you'll find if its something you don't want to carry, you're likely to forget it or just get sick of it. Ditch the box and put it in a pack or make it more portable.

Ya, I would ditch the plastic box. A metal ammo can would be better, you can boil water in it or carry water in it. A small back back would be best because it would leave both hands free.

Some big plastic contractor bags would be better than a sheet of plastic. I would switch mine out.

I used to commercial fish in Alaska, sometimes in areas with no boats around for miles. Every crewman had a tough foam survival suit. In the bottom of each leg of my suit Was an old low top tennis shoe and inside each shoe I had a plastic soap box taped shut. Inside one was a small folding knife, fish hooks, some heavy line, waxed matches wrapped in saran wrap, some fire starter. The other one was full of hard candy and had a space blanket wrapped around it and taped to it. The suit itself had a small flash light with a fresh dated D cell and a whistle connected to it with a big safety type pin. At the top of each leg was a empty opened plastic garbage bag. The sipper was waxed all then the suit was folded and rolled up and put inside a bag. According to Coast guard rules we had to practice donning our suit once a month. Jerk it out of the bag, roll it out stick your feet in the setup garbage bag (not required but if you had any kind of shoes on they made you feet slip in the legs way better) arms in arms and hood up, grab zipper and close up suit. The zipper went over your chi right up to your mouth. The feet were huge and had one way valves to allow any water that got inside out. Plenty of room for the extra gear. The arms had attached mittens and there was a blow up collar tohelp you float right. Suits are orange. I think you were required to don it and have it zipped in 90 seconds. I had the shoes in case something happened at night. I think once you got to shore in SE Alaska food and water were no problem. Rained all the time. Low tide would revile all kinds of marine life. The suit would keep you warm. . But, no shoes would suck.. Its mostly rocks there.

Biggest fear? Boat rolling over at night, power would go out, dark water flooding in, disorientated, have to make your way from for'sle to ladder way in engine room up (now down) to galley and out galley door? Probably drown like a panicked rat in a sack.

I fished out of Anacortes WA. In Feb 1983 2 crabs boats from there rolled over. The Americus and the Altair and 14 good men never made it off them God bless their souls.

Believe it or not, a 100 yard roll of tape-type dental floss is good. Weighs zilch, takes up no room, but it's surprisingly strong and good for small lashings and other uses. It's white and easy to see, so it can serve for trail marking. I would take not one but two of the light Mylar space blankets, plus one of the heavyweight versions with one side silver and the other blaze orange.

Of course I'm predicating this on the assumption that the kit will be for use in the wild; but it couldn't hurt to have those things anyway.

I'm also assuming that you will have some kind of good knife on your person, but a quality four- or 4.5-inch sheath knife, sturdy and easy to grip when wet, should be in the pack. So should waterproof matches. I liked having a Fisher Space Pen, which will write in any conditions, and a waterproof note pad along in case I needed to leave a note somewhere.

A little flat-folding stove for chemical fuel tabs or Sterno, and a supply of the lightweight fuel, takes up very little room and can be used to heat a canteen cup. And since you have that, a few packets of Knorr soup mix could nourish and warm you, and weigh almost nothing.

A big part of what you want in the pack is are you figuring short term or long term? If it might become long term its a lot different that short term. You setting up to survive for less than 10 days till rescue or getting to civilization or having to bug out and stay gone? Death valley or the Bittterroote Selway?

Considerations, long term,
batteries go dead and your not going to be moving around at night
Something like a life straw or filter is going to clog up.
Water sterilization tabs run out
If your somewhere with cell phone coverage and not hiding out for some reason, all you need is a cellphone, a bic lighter a bottle of water and a book to read.
Something to store and heat water in is big help
Getting fat and protein is going go a long ways toward survival and keeping up strength.
Things like fuel stove are not long term
100 rds of 45 acp vs 500 22lr, size and weight
Snares, deadfalls etc. Unless your somewhere there is a lot of fauna, hunting burns up a lot of calories. Hard to hunt in the dark.

If me or my brothers get stranded or disabled and doesn't show up in a day where we hunt fish and camp just look for the burning tree. If I can it will be on a ridge. If there is a big spruce nearby I will be camped underneath in the shelter of the low branches using the dead stuff inside to keep warm with a small fire.

Put that box on a case of bourbon, and you’ll be okay.

This reminds me, I need to update and replenish my kit that I keep in my car.

In addition to the handgun that you choose, and extra ammunition, consider the following items that would be good to include, and is not meant to be an all-inclusive list:

- a High Quality fixed blade Buscraft type knife
- a ferro rod that your knife will easily spark
- a lighter (a primary fire starter, small and light)
- dryer lint (excellent fire starting material, weighs nothing)
- crank style/generator Flashlight/Cell phone recharger
- cable for your cell phone
- lifestraw
- small first aid kid with plenty of pain killers

In addition to having the items, train with the knife and the ferro rod on feather sticking, batoning and creating a fire without the lighter. It is important to be able to use this stuff, not just have it.

Start with that.
