If it's yours you can open the cylinder and look to see if "CS-1" or "CS-2" (super rare) is stamped on the frame by the model #.
They are U.S Customs spec revolvers, and they were not stamped with a dash #.

I have a 686 with CS-1 and an M stamped underneath the CS1.
The barrel is only 4". I purchased this revolver new many years ago.
Would this have any value other than standard retail?

I thought the CS-1, and I presume CS-2, revolvers were exclusively U.S. Customs Service issued guns; however that may not be the case. If they were limited production exclusive to US Customs, I would think they might have an increased collector value to some degree.
When the US Customs revolvers were phased out, Sarco bought most or all of them. US Customs personnel were given the opportunity by Sarco to buy these revolvers before they were put out for sale to the general public or otherwise sold; many Customs personnel took advantage of that offer. Some of those CS marked revolvers, along with other Customs issued firearms, were in new or "as new" condition in the factory boxes and undoubtedly ended up in retail outlets.
This info may or may not be relevant to the above revolvers.

Pick through these threads and I think you'll find some info. This shows the power of knowing the Product Code for the gun (104228). Search the product code and it weeds out the clutter. Throw in a dollar sign with the search terms and you should see some value numbers.

Did someone say CS-1? This is my 3” CS-1 that I bought back in the mid 90’s when nobody wanted them. Yes they are valued now higher then a standard 686.

There were some 3 inch 686's no dash produced that were not CS-1's. However if you should find one NIB for sale be ready to fork over some serious and I do mean serious money. Saw one sell I think on GB a few years ago for 2600 dollars. And don't even think about a 586. Not to mention a -4 plus 3 inch with no lock. I have a 2 1/2 -4 plus no lock in real nice shape that will only increase in value I think.

cs1 vs regular 686
Funny, I have always heard that the cs1 and cs2 were harder to find in 3 inch than a regular 686 3 inch, pre-lock gun . but here in the last couple of years of looking I have seen a lot of 3 inch cs1 guns for sale vs hardly any 3 inch 686 no dash or -4, ect for sale. either way seems as if these rare and desireable 3 inch guns always brings a premium
