Default 629-1 barrel question.

hello: I have a 6 inch full lug 629-1. if I want to change the barrel for a 4" partial lug.... that can be done with any major concerns??? I know the front of the barrel has to be within specs to the front of the cylinder.. my only concern is the ejector... does the ejector also has to be replaced too>???????? thanks...

Short answer, no. The 4" and 6" extractor rod is the same length. And it is lug, not log. The gun is referred to as a hand ejector because you eject the fired cases with your hand, but the part that removes the cases is the extractor, not "ejector".

For about the same price you might get a gunsmith to chop off the unrequired 2" as I did with this 6.5" 629-3. Very nicely balanced gun. Everyone who shoots it wants it.

Might be as easy as having someone with a frame wrench just switch barrels. Might have to trim a tiny bit on the back of the new barrel. Ejector rod and or center pin may be fine or need a tiny bit of shorting with a fine file.

But, if the 4" doesn't time them its shoulder will need to be set back enough that it does. This requires a special tool or some time setting up and doing it with a lathe. Then the barrel extension will surely need trimmed to get proper B/C gap and forcing cone recut a bit. In this case the ejector rod and center pin will also need adjusted.

I'd suggest leaving well enough alone. There were very few full lug barrel 629-1 models made. You have a pretty scarce gun in your hands. LEAVE IT ALONE! Or sell it to someone that'll appreciate it. If you don't like it please don't butcher it and buy another one to your liking.
