Talking 29-6 Pig Poker: Update post 37 Range Time

I just called it quits 3 months ago from a 32 year career beatin' on sheet metal and I'm supposed to be on a fixed income, right? Well, no-one told my willpower (or lack of) that. I can't resist a nice 44 mag, especially a long ol' hog leg. I have a 6" 29-6 that I've been shooting a LOT here lately and thought it'd be great to have one with an 8" barrel.
This gun was the last of the blued revolvers made by the factory for several years and with all the good engineering changes before the less desirable changes came along. The gun came with a fat forged target hammer, serrated target trigger and early enough for the old style cylinder release. The thing that surprised me the most was that it is a square butt frame! I got it home and stripped it down to inspect it, pulled the grips and BAM, I'm looking at a square butt! I had to pull out the SCSW and sure enough, this one fell into the date range before S&W made the shift to round butt frames and MIM cylinder releases. It didn't come with the box but from the serial number (BRH-33xx) it looks to be in the '93-'94 time period.
My local range is typically swamped on the weekend so I'll do an update with a pile of spent cases and I hope some nice groups in a few days.
Here are the obligatory pics. I hope y'all enjoy.
Mark

Square butt!

Posing with it's little brother.

Well shucks, the bullet's half way there before it leaves the barrel. That ain't fair.....

All kidding aside that's one fine looking pair of guns.

Enjoy.

Wowee! That is one L-O-O-O-N-G Tom.
That one would make even Inspector Callahan feel inadequate!
Nice score.

Wink

I like to take 3 shooter-grade Model 29s (4, 61/2, and 8 3/8"barrels) to the range and shoot identical ammo through each one in turn. The 4" really barks and kicks, 6 1/2" is a little calmer and 8 3/8" is a ***** cat in comparison. I use good old S&W target stocks on each gun and wear baseball batting gloves to avoid hands getting torn up.

Try it; you might like it.

I almost put some nice target grips on for the glamour shots but this is how the gun shipped from the factory. I've never seen square butt rubber Hogues that didn't have the huge (and ugly) hump on the right side covering the side plate. That was partly what surprised me when I saw the gun was a square butt model. I've used gloves in the past for hard hitting magnum loads but everything I load is mild to medium power nowadays.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Oh come on now.....

Like Charles Bronson said in 'once up on a time':

'Here is what you paid for it..and one!' And now send it to me....

What you have already noticed Mark, here we have a dash 6 and not even a MIM cylinder release...a white Elephant for sure with a long trunk.

super looking rigs. Range time should be fun as you enjoy retirement. The dang humidity has been bad the last couple of days, do we have to wait til October to have super great days at the range or just go shoot in the heat?

We went to the range yesterday morning and the humidity was terrible. Stayed as long as we could.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Default 29-6 love

Mark: You have been the one who got me into this and I thank you for it!

Been taking mine a lot too and love it. It is my favorite revolver now and my favorite of all my guns together with my new P210.

I shoot it at 25 yards and got an accurate load with 220 gr Sierra JHP, 8.1 and 8.3 gr of HS-6. But I will try some more cast bullets with Bullseye. I tried the good load and get a 10'' or so group at 100 yards.

Wish I had the 8 3/8 to compare. I do think the 29-6 is the best iteration of the model 29.

Square butt!

Posing with it's little brother.

Congratulations, you have done it again! Looks like a nice 1! (both actually) I still have not fired my -2, 4" that I got at the end of April. Too much going on? Bob

Some day you will be too old and feeble to do this stuff. I doubt when that time comes you will be saying to yourself "I wish I hadden't have bought that gun!".

That thing is going to SHOOT!

Congrats on retirement and a sweet 44. I am on my third year of retirement and fixed income. I think I have spent more money now than I did working.

And yet another one from my list of "needs" you managed to find. Gotta say I have a bit of barrel envy right now!

Retirement gives you more time to get out and spread it around.

Square butt!

Posing with it's little brother.

Or maybe somebody will share a nice recipe for Bar b Que sauce, LOL, I'm chewing on a grilled Poke Chop right now!

I have one of those that I bought off Geronimo Jim on here. The 8 3/8s shoots so well I don't even like to shoot my 6 inchers anymore.

Congrats on a very nice pair of 44's. The only 29-6 I have left is my 8 & 3/8" Classic which I only fired a few times just to sight it in.

Funny how life is.2 1/2 years ago,I retired. The first gun I bought after retirement(a few weeks after) was a 8 3/8''629.I guess I must admit that you've got very good taste Sir!
Congrats for your acquisition and don't worry about being now on a fixed income.I can tell you that we have more time to think when retired about jinks and tricks for how to raise the needed $$$ to get that ''must have new toy''...and we easily succeed at it.

Beautiful gun, Mark! A great catch for you. I wouldn't mind having a long tom 44 myself.

Default Coming of age

The first time a man drops a hammer on a .44 mag is reminiscent of the first time he inserted a round in the chamber! I gotta do this a lot more!

I finally got a chance to get a couple of range days in this week to see if me and the new one were going to get along.
Monday was very discouraging. I felt like I couldn't hit the side of a barn. I'd carried my old reliable 629-4 PowerPort with me and shot two cylinders of really good groups so I knew at least it wasn't the ammo. (And COULDN'T have been me)
I went back today and I think we're starting to get to know each other better. My groups at 25 yds looked much better this go 'round. Still room for improvement, as always but I think the two of us are gonna be good buds.

Dirty pictures!!!

For his experience and ability 0le vette shoots quite well. Better quality paper

targets would help define groups.. Having the same setup in a 629-4

l can attest to the half lug design being better balanced than the full lug

Classics.. l look forward to the future seeing those 4'' groups SHRINK;-)
