Default 357 ammo for 686

(posted yesterday in the ammo portion of the forum , but that is a ghost town , please move if not appropriate)

ok gang
major issues w my 686 at the range today.
quite possible due "cheap" ammo that I used.

"Tula" 357 Mag
"lacquer coated steel casing"
158gr

I couldn't get the extractor to work unless I used heavy force
the casing was stuck and couldn't be removed w/o excessive force
Absolutely zero issues using brass cased ammo

thoughts?

I have seen several individual guns that stick that ammo, and many others that don't. I have never figured out how to tell in advance which will and won't, but once the gun tells you.......Well, what else do you need to know?

Along with a squib rod, I also carry a little armorers hammer (the kind with a brass and white plastic head) to give those pesky rounds that don't want to come out of the cylinder a small tap, with the plastic side.
I've been doing that for years and I haven't bent an extractor rod yet(the only problem when hitting this part with any hammer-when the palm of your hand gets tired of course)

May I suggest Fiocchi 158JHP as one of the best retail bargains for 357s. They shoot clean in my 686. And currently they are going for $0.44/round in a box of 50.

I keep a few around, but am now reloading them with Vihtavuori N105 and now getting ~1,400fps...

Tula does not make reliable ammo for anything except the AK or SKS. I have heard this for so many years now. Since I don't purchase or use Tula ammo for anything, I am certainly not an expert.

Steel cases do not have as much "spring back" as brass. Combined with magnum pressures of the 357 they grip the chamber walls "better".
Keep a rod handy , slip it into the fired case mouth and gently tap the case out....you don't want to damage the extractor. Hammering on the extractor rod is a good way to damage the rod and extractor...one hit off center and you can bend that rod.
Next time stick with brass for magnum loads .
