Default How long has it been.......

How long has it been since you didn't have a single gun on the GunBroker watch list???? Just picked up my LONG searched for 617 no dash and the 625-8 will be here Tuesday. I'm done....yah right.

PS. The 625 will be my first and only IL gun. They say you can't see it when your shooting....sure hope so.

You probably won't see the flag for the red white & blue grips. Those are two very nice snags!!

The flag has a lug that interacts with the hammer. It has a small spring that holds it down until the cam from the keyway pushes it up to lock.

I just added a pistol to my watch list yesterday. It's a model I've been wanting for some time and I'm hoping this one doesn't suddenly start getting a lot of bids. The owner had it listed a while back but when I inquired he admitted that the barrel was indeed canted. He also notified me that he was pulling the pistol from GB and it was going back to Smith to be corrected. He just got it back a few days ago and everything looks good now. Hope so. I know that S&W sometimes takes the stance that "It's within spec". He did show pics of the alignment and it looks good on paper. We'll see how it goes in a couple of days. No bids yet (fingers crossed).

I normally am watching something on G.B. Looking to buy, or see going prices of certain things. I have gotten some NICE stuff there at reasonable prices. Look at Armslist daily too. Bob

I've had guns on saved searches (what I think you meant vs. watch list) since about 2012. Not many S&Ws really since they're so competitive on there. It's more about hard to find guns made in the last 10-20 years that went out of production quickly or were special models.

I'm pretty frustrated with GB though. I've lost the last several auctions when I set a reasonable "high retail" limit and lose. There's just nothing "reasonable" about that site anymore (if there ever was). Someone will come along that just has to have it and will overpay. Eight times out of ten the same gun and I will cross paths within the next year and I'll buy it for what it's actually worth.

I've got a bunch on my watch list and several saved searches. Recent prices on the revolvers I'm interested in have gone over my limit and several haven't hit the seller's reserve.

I've gotten some pretty good deals in the past but some auctions are just crazy. There are firearms on there that have been listed at least for months and probably over a year. There is a $700 Ruger carbine on there that has been priced at over $1200 for a very long time. When these auctions run down they are relisted. There's no charge I guess if it doesn't sell so they just keep getting renewed. Some of the best deals I've found have been with the "Buy it Now" option when a guy lists his item for a fair price and just wants to sell it. My latest addition to my watch list ends tomorrow and so far no bids. It'll probably skyrocket at the end but... we'll see.

Nothing about GB is designed to help the buyer. It is designed to let the seller get as much as possible for their item. That doesn’t mean you can’t get a good deal or bargain. It just take some self control and market knowledge. Only you can control if you get a bad deal or a descent deal. I will say that the people I have dealt with on GB did provide accurate descriptions and were easy to deal with.

I wish they would do away with those stupid reserves. Whenever I do a search I check the box that eliminates all auctions with reserves. I can understand not wanting to let you item go for half it's value. However, all you have to do is start the item at the lowest price you're willing to accept. For me, auctions with reserves just clutter up my search.

I'd like this post a hundred times if i Could! I have gotten to the point that I will not bid on any auction that has a reserve. Two different times I've placed my top bid on a gun and watched it through 5 days or so only to get to the end and find out that while I was the high bidder I didn't break the reserve barrier.

The last time it happened another gun auction I was interested in ended while I was waiting to find out if I beat the reserve.

For me, The reserve auctions are a waste of my time and detrimental to my blood pressure.

My last 2 purchases on G.B. were Buy it Now. 17-2, & 29-3. Prices were right, and NICE guns to boot! The plus of using that site is that you can find things there that are not locally available. Of course there are minuses also. Bob

No bids yet on the pistol I'm watching with less than 24 hours to go. I probably just jinxed myself though. I've wanted one of these for some time so I'm hoping that maybe this time I'll get lucky. They only made them for like 3 or 4 years and they've been out of production for about 10 years so not a lot of them around.

GB takes time and patience to find a deal. I usually pick what I want and stalk that model every day.
I keep stuff on my watch list all the time, 14 now, even though I won’t be buying anytime soon.

Where I live, there are no deals, and any Smith is $200 or more over a high price.

I also have a low number of firearms compared to some semi-collectors. Every one must have a purpose in my world and I try to limit redundancy.

The only perceived need I have now is a K frame, 3” or less, P&R and I don’t care about a box. This will test my patience.
I wait and watch.

That's the goal of any auction. Would you list an item on an auction site (or at a live auction, for that matter) if you knew the auction was slanted toward the buyer spending as little money as possible? Heck no!

Minorcan also said, "That doesnít mean you canít get a good deal or bargain. It just take some self control and market knowledge. Only you can control if you get a bad deal or a decent deal."

Very true. I enjoy auctions and make my first bid my maximum bid and let the auction's auto-bid process do my work for me. If other bids take the item above that amount and I can't bring myself to go any higher, I walk away still happy. After all, the experience cost me nothing.

I have come away from auctions smelling like a rose and no more so than on a 2-1/2" Model 66-4 about five years ago. The seller set a minimum bid of $416 and described the gun as being in "average condition." I really had no interest in snubbies but downloaded his photos so I could enlargen them in order to see what just had to be wrong with the gun. Nothing about the gun said anything but "like new" so I decided to help him out by getting what I was sure would be a bidding war (among other bidders, not me) started. For whatever reason, no one else bid and I wound up with the gun for $416. I honestly don't think it was ever fired.

On two occasions, I won S&W revolvers with concerns, both 686s. One, a Classic Hunter, had aftermarket very look-alike smooth target stocks and the seller, who I really don't think knew the difference because he was selling a gun he inherited, immediately sent me what I set as the average selling price of the real McCoy in return for the imitations.

The other time, the hammer in a no-dash 686 would not travel back fully in double-action mode. The seller was put in touch with my S&W-trained gunsmith who received the gun and paid him the $66 he wanted to make the gun right. In both cases, the guns were purchased with an inspection period so I could have returned them for a refund if the sellers declined to help.

I also won a Remington Custom Shop rifle that turned out to have had its stock altered. The seller sent me $300 to cover the "damages" instead of taking the gun back and relisting it.

Always buy from a seller with a good rating and who offers an inspection period.

Ed

There is one thing everyone should do if they're buying a firearm at auction. Check what a new one costs. Sometimes you can't if it's no longer in production but I have seen many times where auctions for used guns (many times without all the accessories that came with) were starting for more than I can buy a new one for from Buds or Grab-a-Gun. I think some of these used gun sellers must be checking the price at the manufacturers website and then deducting a certain percentage or something. Currently Buds is asking $727 for a Ruger model 77/357 but there are at least two sellers on GB asking for starting bids of well over $1000. Go figure.

I'm on the hunt for a 625 3" in 45 acp. I check gunbroker everyday. Like the posted above I check against Bud's and notice several 625 JM are listed on gunbroker for well above what you can buy a brand new one for.

I picked up a Dan Wesson 740 8" barrel not too long ago. Since then I haven't had a single thing in my watch list or saved searches. As far as the stuff I like and the stuff I buy I really don't have much I'm looking for.

In the last few months I've got a 454 Casull Rossi 92, another 357 maximum 10.5" Blackhawk and that 740. All were good deals considering the scarcity.

Just bought a BIN gun on GB from my watch list. I'll show it off when it shows up, nothing too unique though.

Years ago (before buyers got stupid ) I did well on GB and it helped fill out my collection. But my how things have changed. Everything I might be interested in is way out of my budget.
These days I only watch a few auctions and most of the time its to get an idea of the current value on guns I already own. Once in a while there may be one that I actually want. But I only watch it to see how crazy the price will get. I haven't bought anything on GB in at least 4 or 5 years.

But are those guns on GB pre-MIM and pre-IL? Don't forget that there is a strong market for those guns which can no longer be purchased new.

I'm not bashing new guns, just sayin'...

Exactly as long as Gunbroker has been in business! Not the auction/flea market type!

I’m waiting on my 17-3 right now. I was the only bid. I hate the “15 minute rule”.

Been about a week for me but haven't bought anything since February. It was an expensive and rather rare one. I will be putting in for a low number on the forthcoming Civilian Marksmanship Program M1911A1 in October.

I like the 15 minute rule but hate the bidders who bid within the rule.

Mix of both. The pre lock guns bring a lot more.

I was winning a 325 night guard the entire week. Was down to less then 2 minutes I believe and someone bid way high over my max bid and it was gone.

I watch several guns. Some I may be wanting to buy others just curiosity issues.
I have gotten some really good deals on GB. Last one was a 60-15 that was destined to be my daughter’s carry gun.
Have to watch close and be diligent on GB.
I have been filtering out auctions with reserves for three years now. Complete waste of time to even look at them. Reserves are 99% of the time set at ridiculous prices and the guns never seem to sell, rendering the listing worthless on the advanced search when investigating sold prices.
I cannot figure out why a vendor would waste their time putting a gun on if they are going to put a reserve on it. As one poster noted, just put the starting price at your lowest acceptable price.

I personally like the 15-minute rule. It offers you a little protection from people with nothing to do in life but sit there with their finger poised on the "Bid" key with two seconds left in an auction.

I like the 15 minute rule. It favors who wants the item the most instead of who is the fastest on the keyboard. There is still a strategy though, you don't want to bid early and show interest.
