Default Looking for a first revolver

Hello, fellow Smith & Wesson fans,

I got into firearms in 2013, and I've had several semi-automatic pistols and a few rifles, and I'm looking for a new experience. I was looking for a revolver and stumbled on two that seemed unique on a local gun ad site that i was hoping to get your take on.

One was a S&W Model 19-5, 4in blued. It was made in the late 80s. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I dont see any signs of finish wear or scratches. It has the original wood grips, and aside from looking old, I don't see any blemishes in the wood. He claims he got it from an estate, and the original owner didnt use it much. He's asking $500.

Another item I discovered is a seller who bought a new 4" Model 29-10, never fired it, and wants to get rid of it. He's offering $650 or best offer. Pictures look immaculate and he has all the new in box stuff. Now I wasnt looking for a 44mag, but it sounds like a great deal.

I was also looking at a new Model 60 Pro Series.

What I'm looking for .357 mag revolver with wood grips. I dont see my polymer guns being desirable in another decade, and I'd like a firearm that can potentially be somewhat collectible or an heirloom. The only hitch is that my budget is under $700, so I probably can't afford any performance center models.

I was hoping I could pick your brains to see what you think of these two used firearm deals and to see if you have any suggestions on revolver models that I could look into.

If it were me and those were the only options I'd offer the seller 90 percent of the asking price for the 19.

I would have zero interest in a 29 or a 60 with the internal lock.

My two bits.

Default Just from what you said....

Oh, first. And a Hound Dawg Howdy to you from SC.

From what you say the mod 19 fits the bill. They are a sought after model. It has the wood grips and not knowing exactly the condition, the price seems good. And you are looking for a .357.

The 19 is not intended for continuous full bore magnum loads, and there is a possibility with light jacketed bullets at full bore, that the flat on the forcing cone can crack. These are just caveats not judgement.

Unless shot with .44 special loads, a .44 takes some getting used to and unless you like hand numbing recoil.

The model 60 is an excellent gun but it is a 5 shot J frame better suited to shooting the .38s than the .357s.

I'd buy the 19-5. Seems like a fair price if it passes inspection.

The Model 19 would be my choice given the above.

That's a good price on that M29-10. I have one, and absolutely love it. IMO the N frame is the ultimate configuration for S&W revolvers, and if you want "The Revolver", that's a great place to start. It will put a smile on your face every time you pull the trigger. I have two M19s, and while I love them, they don't get to the range nearly as often as my M29-10, which goes along every time.

That said, unless you compromise and get a soft rubber grip, factory 44 mag is fun to shoot for about one cylinder. Precision One sells fairly inexpensive 44 SPL that is high quality and hot enough to be fun to shoot.

Thanks for the feedback, all! I'm thinking about reaching out to the seller of the 19-5. Speaking of passing inspection, is there anything, in particular, to look for when buying a used revolver?

Also, RWSmith, when you say that it can't handle continuous full bore .357 mag loads, are you talking about shooting a box of 50 at the lane once every-other-month? I wasn't planning on buying Underwood/Buffalo bore hot loads, I'm pretty sure I'd use .38 special most of the time, but once in awhile I'd like to shoot a full power load to liven things up. I don't want to accidentally break it.

Thanks again for your help!

You can shoot "full bore .357" in moderation to "liven things up", say 25-50rounds every couple of months with limited danger of damaging your firearm. I shoot mostly .38 specials in my Model 19, mostly because I've become recoil adverse at 73.

As long as the forcing cone, timing, etc. is good on the Model 19 that's what I'd go with in your situation.

I bought one recently for $450 and love it, I probably won't fire too many magnums through it. But I have no doubt if I decided to fire a few every so often it wouldn't cause any issues. Granted they definitely won't hold up to a steady diet of magnums but I think the issue is a bit overblown.

The K frame 357's are nice guns, be it a 19 or 66 stainless version. IMHO, I would not use the real hot stuff as you suggested. I would however offer that you might consider an N frame model 28-2 or -3. Basically a no frills model 27. Either 4" or 6". There are lots of them around on the used market.

Just a thought

Ok, I think I've got it. I've got one more question for you guys if you will indulge me. I've never done a face-to-face gun meet and gun buy. I've always bought in a store, on online and picked up at an FFL. We've all heard stories about Craigslist robberies and worse when going to meet someone. What do you do when meeting someone to purchase a gun to stay safe?

Edit: I live in Texas.

Model 19 would be my choice.

Not sure what state you are in and what local laws are, but if the deal is legit, the seller should have no problem meeting you at the local Sheriffs office parking lot or public firing range with other people present.

Tough choice.
The 19 is a great range plinker super smooth trigger, best versatility and cheaper to shoot overall.
The 29 is 44. Nuff said
If you have a wife with small hands or children, then the 60 is great too.
I have them all in stainless configuration (66,629,60).
I would shoot the 44 more often but it takes a backseat to the 460

Well, thanks for the help, all! I sent a message to the seller of the Model 19 requesting a meet up. As a thanks I thought I'd share some of the ad pictures. There are no serial numbers. The pictures are fuzzy, but I cleaned up the color.

You should ask if that gun has been refinished.

Looks nice. One of the thing to look for on initial examination is pushoff. . Cock the hammer, an with your thumb, try to bush the hammer forward. It should not close.

Good luck

I might suggest that, if you're doing the trade-off in the parking lot of your friendly local LEO, it may be prudent to let them know that that's what you're there for. What with the way things are today.

Also, my vote would have been for a Model 14 or prior, especially if you reload. I think they're the epitome of what a double-action revolver should be. But the 19 is, of course, not terribly far off.

Default SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM.

I would think used & condition, condition, condition. For 700$ and an "heirloom"/ "collectable" the 19 is a good option as it has quite a following. I WAS gonna suggest to see what fate placed in your path, & go with the best deal/condition, as you likely won't lose $ on about any of them (IMO), I haven't. Post some pics after you buy.

With a budget under $700, the range of
available Smiths in .38 and .357 is quite
large for used and some new.

If you're not under any pressure to buy,
I'd say do some more hunting around gun
shops, pawn shops, any local on-line gun
sites.

Doesn't hurt to ask a gun shop what it can
do for you in the way of out the door prices
on new models that might catch your fancy.
I'm thinking of the Smith 686s, the 66,
the 67 (.38 only). And, although this is the
Smith Forum, don't overlook the possibility
of a Ruger GP-100. And don't forget the
Smith Model 10.

But if the Model 19 is nice which by the
pictures seem so, that would be my first
choice. Ditch the idea of the Model 29
with expensive ammo and really heavy
recoil.

I will throw something else into the ring.
You may want to consider a L frame. 581, 586, 681, 686. Depending on model, available in various barrel lengths. Will take a diet of heavier loads than a K frame. They take the same size stocks as the K too. Bob

On my computer, the cylinder appears to have a plum hue to it. Does anyone else notice that? Also, the sideplate fit at the top is worth a second look.
As Skwirl suggested, I would examine a bit more closely the possibility that it has been refinished. For me, that would have an impact on the value.
I realize that you said you "cleaned up the color", so perhaps that is what I see that concerns me.
I hope you find a good one and get a lot of pleasure owning it!

Easy Choice. The 4" mod 19 is a great multipurpose gun that is great at the range or home protection. Can be carried if dedicated too. It will also be the most pleasant to shoot out of the three mentioned.

FWIW, I shoot mostly 38's out of my 357's for range/plinking .

Grab that 19-5!

Many here will tell you not to bother with the new S&Ws.

They have learned from experience.......First off the new guns are simply not as good as the old ones and often cost the same or even more than the desirable vintage guns.

Second, there's that damned internal lock.......which kills resale value and has been known to malfunction in the past.

Third......the older Smiths just have a better LOOK to them and pride of ownership is far greater.

That's my two centavos and I have shot, bought and sold a few Smiths over fifty or so years of owning, loving and respecting them.

Der Verminator,

Many on the Smith Forum will also tell you
that the new guns are fine and in some ways
superior to the older ones, myself included.

And I, like you, have 50 years experience with
Smith & Wesson revolvers. But I do think you
have not really had any real experience with the
new Smiths. You are repeating some negative
reports that have appeared on this and other
forums.

The plum color of the barrel and cylinder is a result of a temperature abnormality during the bluing process. Pretty common during the 80s at least.

The sideplate looks poorly fit, so take a look at the seams. If there are gaps then it has been taken off, which is usually not a good sign.

The IL is a non issue. I have no first hand knowledge of any malfunction cause by this lock. I been around S&W firearms since way before the IL was added.

As far as resale, if you buy something for $1000.00 and sell it twenty years later for say, $25,000.00, I'd say you really have something there.

When you buy a Smith with pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, hammer mounted fireing pin, engraved logo.....etc, new in 1964 for say, $500.00 and sell it in pristine unused condition 20 years later, or even 54 years later, with original box and packing, how much money do you really think you'll get out of it?..........come on.........be realistic.

Unless super unique, special serial number, famed commemative or celebrity owned, it won't make you rich.

While I'm on the subject of hammer mounted fireing pins, the Colt line of revolvers, which many hold in high regard to the point of which all other revolvers are compared to, have had the frame mounted fireing pin incorporated in its design for years. Just how is this a negative for Smith and Wesson?

"Canted" barrels on the other hand are an issue but I hope S&W has that problem taken care of. Either way, close inspection before paperwork is started is nessessary for any firearm you decide to get. Handgun or long gun.

Just saying

I wouldn't have any interest at all in the Model 60, but I just don't care for J-frames.

The other two...I'd be interested in them.

Just an aside on "the lock" . I've owned several. None ever bit me, or pooped on the carpet. I've never had any trouble at all selling one. I wasn't able to put the kids through college with the proceeds of the sale, but that's just the way it happens sometimes.

I saw that when I fixed the color range on the picture. I didnt say anything about it to see if anyone else picked up on that. Kinda concerning... Does it look like that because the side plate was pryed open and damaged, or just not fully tightened after being loosened at some point?

I didnt notice that until you said something. That's kinda sad I was hoping the gun didnt have any wear. I hope the rebluing isnt hiding anything too bad.

I won't be able to meet the seller until next week. I'm on vacation. He hasn't responded to my last message so hopefully he still has it when we get back.

Thanks for the replies all! I appreciate the feedback it's really been helpful. I'll give you an update when I know more.

Sittinduck21,

You seem fixated on this one seller.

As I said earlier, time to look elsewhere.

Model 19s can be found in stores, on-line
without all the questions about the one
you've considered.

Also consider other models, 586s, new
686s or even the new Model 19 Classic
which was announced a week or so ago.

Only reason that I'm interested is that the price seems right, and the guy should be near where I live. I've been trying to find other model 19's ar a comparable price, but I have my had much luck.

The plumb color would put me off........not a practical .... but an aesthetics issue......I would pass!

Might want to put a want to buy ad here........... number of folks are thinning their collections lately.

For your first revolver......I would try for a nice 4" 19 to 19-4 to get a pinned & recessed gun........ at about 90-95%...... classic S&W, adjustable sights 38/357 nice enough to take pride in and not so nice it becomes a safe queen..........or maybe a similar condition Model 18 in .22lr!

Good luck and happy hunting!!!!!!!!

Great thread title "looking for 1rst revolver".
You certainly came to the right place. The wealth of knowledge on this board is outstanding.
I asked a similar question several weeks ago: my choice was 686 and I haven't been disappointed.

I only have 2 pieces of advice:
#1
don't go cheap , don't let $50-$100 bucks sway your decision. if you don't have the funds for what you want , wait until you do.
#2
Don't buy a firearm in a face to face meeting.
Just don't.... Its a poor practice unless you know the other party. I'm all about risk vs reward. In your case the risk is much greater than the reward.

good luck and let us know what happens!

Default WORRIED ABOUT A FTF MEETING?

Meet at a shooting range (in the daytime) with armed range officers. That's just 1 safe place to meet. Certainly not in a dark alley late at night. Just use common sense & trust your instincts. Most of my FTF meeting have been with guys my age or older, not exactly your run of the mill gangbanger.

Good advice. I always use public places. I also ask for an advance verification (LTC copy or state website printout) that they have a valid firearms licence to carry. That way: a) I have an electronic record of who I'm dealing with and b) proof that my contact are good enough folks to retain a state firearms licence.
FWIW, I probably do 10-12 of these face to face meetings year with likely over 100 of them behind me. I have never had a problem with anyone following these guidelines.

Sittinduck21,

A followup to what Bam-Bam wrote:

The 19-5 won't have recessed chambers
or a pinned barrel.

Question: I found one of the new Model 19 Classics for sale on line for $750-ish all said. Would the new Model 19 have any lingering collector value after they stop making it? Disregarding collector potential, does it offer anything over a regular $700 686/586?

I think I really like blued revolvers with wood grips and a squared over stainless steel.

It is hard to say what will have collector value in regard to new production guns. Unless they are a limited production run, I would not hazard a guess on that one.
An older gun nut once told me, “all guns are collector items. You just have to find some fool that is collecting them.”
