Default Need Expert Opinions

My apologies, I posted this in the wrong forum, deleted, and reposted here.

As you can see from my number of posts, I'm new here. I joined in hopes of finding a 629-4 Classic 5" for my one and only collector safe queen.

In my many nights searching the web, I came across a 629-3 Classic Hunter 6" in mint condition with box and papers. In fact I came across two, nearly identical and the same price $1200. I'm really liking the overall looks and the non-fluted cylinder.

I know this isn't the one I'm after, but I'm realizing I may be looking for a unicorn. I may eventually find one, but I don't want to pass up something worthwhile in the meantime.

My question to you experts, 1. Is the Hunter a worthy collector and 2. Is the price fair?

I would not give up looking for what you want. You will still be looking after you buy a compromise. Just my two cents worth.
I think the prices on what you mentioned may be a little high.

Put the money towards what you want. Not a sub.

If you're lucky enough to find a nice 629-4 Classic 5", there's no reason to lock it away as a "collector safe queen".

Shoot it, take care of it, and enjoy it.

The 629-3 Classic Hunter is a good one. Only 2000 made in the -3 with the desirable endurance package. The earlier ones were -1 and -2 without the endurance package. The -3 will stand up to more shooting. Less were made so its more collectible in my book.

They are great shooters as the full lug barrel and non fluted cylinder add weight to tame recoil. I would have to say the 629-3 classic hunter should hold more collector value long term over a 5" 629-4. I also believe from experience with many a -3 and -4 that with the -3 you most likely get a mechanically better example.

I would not pass up a 629-3 with 5" barrel in excellent condition if you really want a 5". The -4 offers no real improvements over the -3 and I like the flash chrome rust resistant hammers and triggers.

If you really want a true "collector" you have to have the box. That's a given. I think a nice -3 Classic Hunter is worth $1,200 with the box and all the docs. No box. Forget it. You may not care, but real collectors do, and that's the market place.

Thanks for all the replies. My only S&W is a 66-3, which I didn't even know what the dash meant until about a year ago when I started looking at the 629 Classic 5".

I'm leaning towards buying the Hunter now and continuing my search for the -4 Classic 5". I really like the looks of the Hunter with the non-fluted cylinder and the fact that it's has the box (in excellent condition as well), papers, and tools. My voice of reason says that I'll regret it if I don't buy. Besides, if I have this one as a collectible, eventually two would be better right?

I have a 629-3 Classic with 5" barrel. I like the balance of the 5" barrel. If you can afford both, get the 6" Classic Hunter and enjoy it, until you find the 5". Having said that, I'm no expert.

Well I bought the 629-3 Classic Hunter and then scored a set of new Ahrends Retro Target stocks in cocobolo for $50 on GB. I'm very happy with both purchases.
