Anyway, in my other thread I expressed interest in getting a Model 19 revolver, and I was warned that using light grain magnum loads could crack and destroy the barrel forcing cone. I did some googling and found older forum posts where people were saying that Smith and Wesson was no longer producing model 19 barrels and so they could no longer repair or replace barrels with cracked forcing cones.

Since Smith and Wesson is reintroducing the model 19, I thought I'd ask if they could repair old model 19s, specifically from the '80s.

They replied today with the following message:

I dont know if this applies to Model 19's with pinned barrels though. So, good news at least.

That is interesting and good news for those guns with the dreaded cracked forcing cone. Thanks for posting.

The way it’s stated it sounds like they’ll replace any model 19 barrel with the new model 19 barrel. That’s how I’m reading it.

So the question now is will they use the two piece barrel or the one piece? Or offer you the choice?


In either event, since the finish won't match, it would make a great excuse to make a pinto.

Wonder what lengths??? Prolly the only way for most to have a 3" would be make it.

I think they will only offer whatever lengths will be available for the Model 19 Classic line. I dont know if the main production line uses a one piece or two piece barrel, but I believe whichever that one is, that would be the only option.

.....how? Different forcing cones/barrel shanks...not to mention the two piece barrel.

They said the new style barrel.. So I guess they cut the flat on the underside to clear the yoke..

Replacement but not improved reliability.

Good news if it is true, but I'm having some difficulty understanding how it could be done. I tend to be a Doubting Thomas, so I'll believe it when one of you gentlemen or ladies posts a picture of your old M19 with a two piece barrel installed by S&W. I really hope I'm wrong about this.

Wonder if they meant 4.25" (no more four inch) as "new barrel" vs two-piece?

The barrel threads are the same, and the shroud portion butts up against the frame which is the same dimension as earlier frames.

Special tool to torque the barrel.. voila.. old 19 with new barrel.

Does the new model 19 lock up at the yoke like the current model 66, instead of the end of the extractor rod? That may be an issue if so.

As far as I know it is mechanically the same as the new Model 66, just in carbon steel instead of stainless.

Sometimes I don’t think some some of the people answering the phone at Smith have clue. There is no way the new barrel would work on the old 19 without a lot of modification. Ejector rod lockup for one

Plus you need the flat spot on the bottom of the barrel on the old style yoke and cylinder for clearance.
