Default 27-2 vs 27-3 in 8 3/8"

I am looking at a nice 27-3 in 8 3/8". Normally I have only seen 27-2s in this barrel length. Can anyone compare the two? Does anyone have a 27-3 in 8 3/8" who can give me some feedback?

Thank you!

The only differences between the two are the pinned barrel and recessed charge holes, so a good 27-3 would be a nice gun to have.

I have a M27-5. Not exactly the same but pretty close. It's accurate as heck but it's such a nice looking pistol that I just don't take it out very often. I normally shoot in the woods but I did take it to a public range once. Almost got tired of everyone who walked by having to stop and ask me about it. A beautiful pistol with a long barrel seems to draw attention. While it's not the most practical pistol I own it was one of those that when I saw it I knew I wanted it.

I have a 27-3 with the 8 3/8 barrel. Despite the long barrel it is by no means overly muzzle heavy as the barrel tapers and it is relatively thin at the muzzle. I always liked the look of the 27s with the 8 3/8 barrel. Mine shoots about as well as my 6" 686 which is a high compliment.

These days even with the long sight radius I don't see the open sights too well so the 27-3 does not see much range use.

I can't tell you about the 27-3's, but I love my long tube 27-2's, they are one of the finest revolvers ever produced. Here are a few of mine:

Some nice guns there!

Visiting an LGS tomorrow that has the 27-3 8 3/8". If it looks good, I will probably buy it.

why the 8 3/8" barrel?
For serious distance shooting ! gives extra sight radius and velocity

this is not an all day, concealed carry BUG.

there's more to life than defense.
different guns for different jobs.

A followup:

Today I went to the LGS to see the 27-3 8 3/8" gun. While I was there I saw they had a second 8 3/8", this one being a 27-4. In inspecting the 27-3, there was quite a "rumble" that could easily be heard when the cylinder was spun, but other than that the gun looked good.

The 27-4 also looked good and the cylinder made no sound when spun. I made an offer on this gun (including to pay cash). They rejected my offer and made a counter offer. Unfortunately the counter offer was still too high for me (and still higher than their price for the 27-3).

So in the end, I walked away from both guns. Either might have worked for me as a range gun, but the prices were $200-$300 higher than what I felt either was worth. Their prices were at the level you would have expected for a NIB safe queen which had never been fired that also included the box, attachments, and papers.

I learned (or relearned) to always look at the gun before buying. Secondly, to know the prices. While I am not against paying more to get what I want, I don't like to pay way more than what something is worth.

So I will keep looking around.

BTW-The guns felt fine with the 8 3/8" barrel. Not front heavy at all. They also had a couple of 27's with 6" barrel (also priced too high for me). The balance on the 6" was very nice as well.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

I am a day late on this topic but I have 27-2's in all the barrel lengths except the 4" I own is a -3. The -3 shoots as well as any of them. If you don't care about P&R then you can probably save some $$ with a -3.

Too bad on the negotiation. The longer barreled 27s tend to go for less these days and you should be able to find a nice specimen in the high three figure range.

I know what you mean by not being able to see the iron sights very well. By the time I get the rear sight in focus I can hardly find the front sight .
A while back I picked up a 629 performance center hunter 7 1/2" barrel and it came with a red/green dot scope. What a joy that is to shoot, I can hit clay pigeons at 60 yards with it.
