I have large hands. The stock rubber grips are not comfortable. I prefer beefier grips i.e. Hogue, etc. Looks are not important. I tried searching here but found nothing. It’s not comfortable just holding. Any suggestions are appreciated. This is my first 629.

The grips (Hogue) used on the X-frame revolvers will stretch to fit on the round butt N-frame revolvers, and are quit large grips.

Pachmayr makes a Diamond Pro grip that is smaller but has a lot of cushion to them, especially on the back strap.

Order some Hogues. They make them for 629s.

Is your 629 a round or square grip frame? Pretty sure they make for both.

If you really have a big hand see if you can find a set of Jordan Troopers made by Pachmyer. Should be inexpensive. They are a hard plastic. I'd you like them have Herrets make you a set out of pretty wood fit to your hand. I almost have enough hand for those and I love how they look.

I realized that I wasn’t gripping the gun high enough. Now it feels better. I contacted S&W but they had no other larger grips to suggest. I believe this model has the square grip frame ( don’t have the pistol with me ). I found a review from another PC Hunter owner with large hands. The grip looked nice BUT he explained the screw did not fit correctly. Gotta get some Ammo & confirm the grip.

If your gun is this one that I have posted pictures of then it is a square butt. Actually this is one of the only square butts that S&W currently produces. About the only rubber grip that I have found is the Pachmayr Presentation which I have shown in the photo. These are fairly large so they may work for you. I have really come to favor Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips on my round butt revolvers but they of course won’t fit square butts. I am interested if any one else has suggestions for rubber grips for square butts because while the Presentations are good, I wouldn’t mind finding something better.

Has anyone tried Hogue Model 500 grips on their 29 or 629?

I am almost 100% sure that your 629 is a round butt. Forum member 75vette will be along shortly to confirm.
Try the Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips. You can find them on the web for 20 bucks or less but they are the best I have found. They are very comfortable, absorb recoil well and fill the hand. You need the N frame size. I think they are better than the Houge X frame grips.

I'm sure you've figured out by now that the Magnum Hunter IS a round butt frame. I haven't tried the Diamond Pros but I do know that the X Frame Hogue Tamers will fit and will probably solve your "long digit" problem.

Don't You Ever Wash That Thing

I spoke with S&W and did confirm my 629 is a round butt. Note: it depends on the year your gun was produced. Mine happened to be 2014. I believe they said around 2004 S&W switched from square to round. Thx for the Hogue Tamers suggestion. Most likely going to order the Pachmayr Diamond Pro. Great reviews!

I had a Pachmayr Diamond pro fitted to a 5" 460V at one point.
It lasted about 100 shots before the rubber started to tear around the backstrap, it is made of a very soft material. Taking it off again was also somewhat of a challenge, as the small diameter retaining screw had been severely bent from the recoil.
But that was in a relatively short barrel non-compensated X-frame with heavy loads, it will probably have better longevity in a long barrel .44.

My biggest issue with these grips is that they don't fill the space between trigger guard and grip frame as much as Hogue's or the Pachmayr Grippers do, so that the middle finger will ride higher up behind the trigger guard, leading to the trigger guard beating my middle finger every time the gun was fired.

Thx! My Pachmayr Diamond Pro’s are being delivered tonight. Hoping they are fine.

I only really have two recommendations for N frame grips. If it's a round butt the X frame Hogue grip is wonderful. For square or round, have Herrett's make you a custom. It'll fit your hand, if it doesn't talk to them about it and they'll make it right (cut it down appropriately) I'm pretty much a Herrett's Jordan Trooper addict. They work great.

The Diamond Pro’s are installed & feel great. No gap behind the trigger guard. Hope to test them out this week. Thanks for all the suggestions!

for the 29-6 round butt, as other here have told me, the X-frame tamer ($29) is absolutely perfect. I love the covered backstop and beefy shape which fits my long fingers much better.

The Diamond Pro’s worked fine although I wouldn’t mind trying an even beefier & wider grip.

Take a video of your grip while shooting and we could probably tell what the problem is. Sometimes you need a couple of range trips to “become one with the gun”. It certainly is not the same as shooting a plastic semiauto. That barrel is a monster and the recoil is definitely a different animal

You had hogues originally, Maybe the finger grooves on the hogues are not what you needed anyway, forcing your fingers or hand into an uncomfortable position.
Im not entirely sure of your problem but hogue also makes a device called a handall which fattens up the grip or possibly consider gloves with padding where you need it which in effect fattens up the grip as well.

I wonder if Hogue, Pachmayr or another company makes a slip over grip? I’ve used that on another semi that worked out well.

I mounted the Smith and Wesson X-Frame grips on my 629. I have large hands, and these grips work really well.

I just put the X frame grip on my 4inch M629. Gap at the top but otherwise great fit. I ordered direct from Hogue.
