Your revolver dates in 1955 (55050-75000). There's no strain screw because it has a coil spring. It's an early Chief's Special.

Without pulling out SCSW, the serial number 692332 is likely mid 1960s (I'll guess 1966-67) production (not 1955). Check Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas for a more precise, approximate, ship date.

Model numbers on the Model 36 started in and around 1957. Specific regard of the MODEL numbers added are noted on the Chief Special target run (appx 200) revolvers in the 149,8xx to early 1501xx range (not sequential) some are model marked MODEL 36, some are not model marked, after the 150,000 range they all appear MODEL 36 marked except a few during the transition time period in which model numbers were added.

1955 (not many if any in 1956) was essentially the last year the upper side plate screw was utilized except for the Centennials in which some shipped as late as 1961 (with serial numbers relevant to 1955 or prior) were still shipped with the upper side plate screw. Scarce versions of the 5 screw centennial have the MODEL 40 stamp in the crane on a 5-screw (1953-1955 style) frame.

A11 would be a S&W employee I.D. (fitter or inspector)
75030 is the assembly# to keep fitted parts together during production

Welcome aboard from Wyoming, Clifford.

Based on numbers in my database, both lower and higher than yours I'd put yours as having shipped in the third quarter of 1968.

I'd bet is has the standard thumb latch cylinder release and no diamond around the screw escutcheon on the grips, right? If there's no "-1" after "Mod. 36" then it probably has a tapered barrel, too. If it's a 36-1 it has a heavy barrel.

The 3" models are nice shooters.

Two-bit cowboy, what about a Model 49 SN 700425? Late 1968?

I would recommend starting a new thread when asking for a shipping date instead of asking on an existing thread -- too easy for your request to be missed or overlooked.

Yes, I'd say you've got the date pretty close.

Thanks, I was just trying to determine if it is was a C&R piece or "modern". I'll call the factory and try and confirm when it was made.
