Default S&W 60-7 Help

Looking at a Lady Smith 60-7 up for sale. Year unknown and owner emailed disclosing that they bought it used and it:

"may have been fired only a few times prior to that because it had a small burr on the star hand that caused one chamber not to cycle. I had that stoned down by a gunsmith and it’s worked perfectly since"

Can someone tell me what "stoned down" means and am I correct that the owner is talking about the "star hand" located on the back of the cylinder? Appreciate the clarification. Pulled a real newbie and first posted this to the wrong forum. Oh well.

The nice thing about the -7 is it was made in the era of S&W Lifetime Service Policy. There's a very good chance, that even as a non-original owner, S&W will fix and replace any defective parts, charge you nothing, and paying shipping both ways.

Regarding what the seller means with his "creative" nomenclature. I would agree with your assumption. He's simple talking about the hand.

Stoning is an abrasive technique used to remove metal. Like an Arkansas stone that's used to sharpen knife blades. Sound like a tooth on the ejector star had a bur, and it was removed with a stone. Or, the bur was on the hand. Fine, if done proper.

If the gun was still malfunctioning I'd just have it sent back to the Mothership. Call customer service. Politely explain the problem and ask for a shipping label. Even if they charge you (which I doubt they will) it will probably be less than $50 for the repair.

Default 60-7

Appreciate the quick reply. Don't know much about the 60-7, just have my trusty Model 37 Airweight from 1976. Lady bought it used and her ad reads in part:
"This beautiful little Lady Smith is a model 60-7 with a full, brushed steel frame and the coveted round butt. She boasts a five round .38 special cylinder and a sweet little 1-7/8" barrel. While she comes with a standard molded grip, she can also channel her inner redhead with her Crimson Trace model LG-405 grip. Gently and infrequently shot by a little old lady, she has minimal surface scratching and flawless internals. She also has 2 HKS speed loaders and 1 Bianchi speed strip, plus a zebra-striped rug."
She wants $600 for the package but I'm only interested in the revolver and original grip. Just trying to come up with a reasonable counter to her $600. Thanks again for the info.

$600 is fair to me for the whole kit, especially if the crimson trace is included
Many women sell their j frames because they didnt anticipate the recoil and move onto 380’s.

You want to check the timing closely before buying. (instructions to do so can be found here, you tube, etc.) Stoning the timing components is a delicate task that can cause additional issues.

For a LS, what she's asking for is fair, but less is always better. The laser grip can be sold here in the classifieds for $100, easily. Uncle Mike grips, if that's what they are, can, surprisingly, go for $50+, since they're no longer made and many aficionados love them. Everything, besides the zebra rug, are relatively desirable accessories that have resale value.

Great advice on timing Dave, had not thought of that as a possible issue - she's stated she put 500 rounds through it, no +P ammo but she is the second owner, so how many rounds and how hot was my primary concern. Info on accessories from Kernal was helpful and surprising. I didn't think there was much value in whatelse she included, good to know.

To me it sounds like on of the ratchet surfaces on the extractor star had a burr, and it needed to be filed. One small piece of metal on a ratchet surface can cause serious misalignment with one corresponding chamber. An easy fix if it was done right.

Welcome to the Forum.

Many people, myself included, consider the 60-7 as the "best of breed" in the Model 60 line. The Ladysmith version is sauce for the goose as far as I'm concerned. I briefly owned a Model 60-7 (not the LS version) and traded it for a CZ-75. It was a good trade, but I do miss the 60-7. Some people will pay a bit more for the LS version, others - no. IMHO, $600.00 is a reasonable price for the package. I use the LG-405 grips on all of my Airweight J-frames, and they have become my favorite grips for this type of revolver.

Good luck,

Dave

Default Appreciate the info

Thanks to everyone for the advice and info. After much thought, I decided to pass on the 60-7 because the stone work performed just makes me a bit uncomfortable with the purchase. The revolver is still on the classified section of Armslist in AZ if anyone is close by - the seller will not ship. Thanks again folks.
