Default New 64

Hello Gents,
I picked this 64-5 up as a "value gap closer" in a trade. Worked out to about $100 for it. There is a lot going on with stamps both on the exposed frame and under the grips. I am hoping that someone may have a little insight into what I got myself (or got myself into). I am suspecting it is a LEO turn in but thought I'd put it out there to see what the group says. Serial # is BHS1XXX.

I picked up one in a Huntsville, AL gunstore marked similar to this but had electro-pencil scribbling on the sideplate and web. 1981 shipped date and I understand it is Georgia D.O.C. trade in. Excellent mechanical condition.

It is a 64-5 also.

I also have one. A New York PD turn in.
Cleaned up fine and is accurate with a 5#trigger and the lightest double action I have ever owned.

I agree with mrchuck. MrsB says the 64 has the best DA trigger pull of all my K frames (and she prefers striker fired semi-autos )

I picked up a California DOC 64-5 a few months ago. My serial BEHxxxx is dated to Oct 89 - Jan 90 so if I had to take a guess, yours was made in 1990.

They're great shooters. Mine loves the 158gr LRN American Eagle.

Good to hear they are good shooters. Going to take it in and have it cleaned and the scratches polished out as well as have my local smith make sure everything is tight and right with it. The lockup seems a slight bit loose to me but I’m comparing it to my 19 so that may just be model difference. Just have to resist the urge to let him do a complete action job. Then off to the range with it.

Resistance is not good! A sweet DA pull is a real joy to behold!

Yeah he did my 19 years back. 48 oz da pull, a sneeze in sa. It really is a thing of beauty. The wife is due in 3 weeks and I’m 3 pieces in over the last 2 weeks. I drop on an action job now and she may use it on me.

The strain screw looks to be backed off.

I picked up this 64-3 recently. Stamped Camden NJPD. Doesn’t have anywhere near the Smooth Action of my 3” Mod 64-3 but very acceptable. Looks to have been fired very little. Love to know how it found it’s way from NJ to SC

Yeah, normally they complain about the bad old guns going from the “wild and wooly South” to the safe and civilized North! I’d guess yours was a LEO trade-in from the department in NJ to a big distributor who then peddled the lot around the country. Hope you’ll enjoy it, and shoot it a lot!

Froggie

Upon further review there was a lanyard post installed on this at one point. The post was broken off in the tapped hole. Any opinions on whether it’d be worthwhile to have that replaced and get the proper stocks put on to accommodate this? First time I’ve added one like this to my collection. Thanks again.
