340PD Issue & Question
Took my 340PD to the range today and ran about 75 +P and standard pressure rounds through it. I was able to keep everything inside the 9 ring at seven yards, slow fire. Near the end the cylinder became tight and difficult to rotate w/a extra heavy trigger. When I got home I gave it a thorough cleaning and retightened the cylinder release screw (others did not come lose). I paid extra attention to the underside of the extrator star and ejection rod (it was plenty tight) and now all is well. Anyone have any idea what happened?
I’ve had this weapon for about a year and have not shot it that often, using a Model 37 (previous EDC) for practice w/100 + rounds . It’s my EDC, but this tight cylinder thing is new.

My only guess is that it heated up with 75 rounds and expanded and was fine again once it cooled?

Maybe some debris under the extractor star that got knocked out when cleaning or transporting. I had the same issue once and all it was a small flake of brass fouling under the extractor star.

I believe the cylinder release screw that is the third screw holding the side plate.
Any screws can vibrate loose on a revolver. Especially the lightweight 340pd.
Secure all your screws with blue loctite. The factory screws usually have some red loctite substance on them.
I wouldn’t sweat it. Dry fire it 100x and consider it good to go

Carbon
Carbon on the yoke, the cylinder rotates on some pretty tight tolerances. The bearing surfaces are getting carbon fouling and un burned powder forced in between, remove the cylinder from the yoke from time to time and clean out the inside, and the yoke surfaces that it spins on, and lube it. I remember a thread that had the same issue discussed and a police armorer chimed in on a 340 or 360 pd that he worked on, the cylinder wouldn't rotate no matter how hard the trigger was pulled but with help turning the cylinder and pulling the trigger it would turn, the problem was gummed up bearing surfaces inside the ti cylinder where it rotates against the yoke, he cleaned it and lubed her up and all was well.

Should you pull the cylinder, take care not to lose that small collar (proper term?) on the yoke found on the magnum aluminum frame Js.

Thanks for the input everyone, very helpful. As an aside my hand is very sore and there is a blister on my trigger finger from the frame twisting under recoil. I shot the gun the way it’s carried, w/the small wood boot grips, so w/my XLG hands hanging on was a challenge.

Try some of the Hornady 110gr non +p. You will have to get a shorter front pinned in.
Or, shoot 148gr Winchester Wadcutters Target Loads and call it a day.
These Guns are short range weapons that you can make contact shots with and shoot from odd positions on the ground in a scuffle and not have a malfunction. That's where they excel over a small auto IMO. Most Defensive Shootings are very close range affairs.
These guns say Jacketed Bullets only, but the Wadcutters won't jump the crimp like exposed lead bullets will.

Sounds like you need a set of Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips.
They're a little fatter 3-finger grip, and have a nice padded backstrap.

Thanks, I have a set on my Model 60 but since the 340PD is pocket carried those grips are just too big.

Gotcha, then maybe something more mid-sized, like Compacs or Compac Pros. They are bigger than the wood grips, but not as big as the Diamond Pros, and they cover the backstrap too.

Thanks. I’ve tried several kinds of grips and settled on the wood boots for EDC/pocket. Normally I’d switch them out for Pachmeyers when going to the range but I wanted to test my abilities w/the gun as it’s carried, but 75 + was probably a bit ambitious. What I discovered was I could make very accurate hits @ 7 yards w/the little boot grips. What I have learned from surviving deadly force encounters during my career is you’ll not notice anything much beyond the bad guy dropping during a confrontation.

I just picked up a 340PD and detail cleaned it tonight. I specifically was cautious and didn't see a collar. The Yoke Barrel looked different than my other Js. My other Js have the same diameter the length of the yoke barrel. The 340 has a a fat area. Is this a change?
I stand corrected. It's just longer and the both have raise areas.

Looks like they call it a gas ring on a model 29. Can anyone verify that these are installed in the new 340PDs? I sure didn't see one on mine. I guess the 29 diagram shows a extractor rod collar as well. Still don't see one.

Is it ill advised to shoot it without one? I see the design has been changed a couple of times and even deleted on some models only to return.
Stopping here and starting a new thread.
