Default 340 PD Cylinder erosion

I have a new 340 PD and shot .357 magnum 158 grain out of it for the first time the other day and noticed this. Do you think I should send it back to Smith?

I probably would. Out of curiosity, was the protective coating on the cylinder face intact before firing?

If you are diplomatic enough, they might (& really should) install a new cylinder.

Not to rub salt in the wound, but after a bit of research, the likelihood of cylinder face erosion is the very reason I purchased an M&P340 (coated stainless steel cylinder), as opposed to the 340PD.

A couple of extra ounces is a non-issue, for the durability of stainless. It's still so light in a pocket holster, I sometimes forget it's there.

Did you run a brush over it? I use a brass brush on the face of all my revolvers including my ti cylinder 340PD. Over the last ten years I have used just about every cleaning product except ammonia based products and my gun still looks great. That said I do consider this to be a last ditch carry gun and if it ever dings or has finish wear, so be it, as long as it does not affect the functionality of the firearm.

I am one that believes an ounce or two is important in a pair of lightweight wool dress pants and my 340PD is carried in those circumstances.

I did not run any brush over it and I shot a box of 50 158 grain .357 and a box of 50 38 special.

Its looks like the start of erosion. I contacted Smith and its going back.

Makes me wonder if S&W has had problems w/ the coating process on SOME of their Ti cylinder guns - & THOSE are the ones we hear about w/ erosion issues...

Happens very often, doesn't it: an OP keeping us in the dark. I have two 340PDs and would love to know the upshot. The OP is still active on the Forum: perhaps he'll see this and respond.

BTW, I shot three cylinder full of 125 Hornady Critical Defense. I've seen some other using the same ammo with the same results. Of course I didn't see this until I noticed my erosion. But then again the OP was using 158s?? No rhyme to reason. I think I'll drop a note in the box "If S&W wants to warranty it with a steel cylinder, then I'm good with that.".

S&W has been replacing any Ti cylinder issues with a steel one for years. I hope to be the last person on earth to own a 340PD with the factory ti cylinder.
BTW I have fired dang near everything out of that little gun and a brass brush across the face of the cylinder and it looks smooth as a baby's bottom.

How does one Titanium cylinder like yours work so well, while others tank?
