Default Added a personal touch to my 617

I found a new use for my Piranha CNC machine with a spring loaded diamond drag bit. Just about any image can be etched, kinda neat. This will be one of a kind so if someone finds it 100 years from now they'll know who owned it.

Question

I just got home from a steel match tonight. I shot two different 617 4" revolvers: one was iron sights with green fiber front sight; the second had a Burris Fastfire III red dot. All my loading and reloading done with DS-10 speed loaders and a DS-10 160 round Pelican case.

Does that qualify me for free engraving?

Cool....and now it qualifies as a tax write-off!

p.s The DS is only speedloader I use in my 10 bangers.

Are you offering this as a free service when I purchase a new speed loader? I've been away from machine design too long, these new machines are marvelous.

DS, the engraving is nice, but the thought and talent it took to set-up the tooling is impressive..

A word of warning, you may have the chance to start up your own cottage business for other gun owners.

Sorry guys, I have no plans on doing this on a regular basis. The computer and the CNC do most of the work, I just add my CAD experience and some trial and error on scrap pieces. I just like to show what can be done with an affordable machine and some spare time (I'm retired).

I think it looks quite good, very well done, and I would definitely do a double-take if I saw it on a dealer's table.

But it occurs to me...
Not that you "must!" but when I see that very cool logo/emblem, it makes me think that the revolver was customized by some guncrafter worthy of an emblem. In my opinion, one without the other is just leaving something important left out.

And I do mean that both ways... I have two PPC revolvers that have irrationally good work done to them and neither are signed. One I have identified the master craftsman, the other remains an unsolved mystery.

As good as your emblem looks to me, I would rather it be reserved for a revolver that has been improved by a fine and talented craftsman.

That's merely how I see it, I still say it looks very nice.

I see your reasoning, I'm no gunsmith but I did the performance tuning myself and that means more to me than anyone else. Like I said, it's a personal touch and never expecting to sell it, my wife will have to deal with that after I'm gone.

I just competed in the Michigan SCSA state championship match last month with it and ended up 12th out of 28 shooters in the .22 optic group and they were all semi-auto shooters (except for one other revolver shooter), I also placed 5th in the iron sight division, so I don't feel too bad for an old guy. I've been doing speed shooting for about 25 years, starting to slow down but not loosing interest in the sport.

Also you may not be aware but the design on my revolver (one of my logos) is based on my lasted S&W injection molded speed loader design. I am the guy who started the spring retaining 10 shot .22 speed loader thing 13 years ago, 5 years before anyone else.

If anyone is interested to see how it was done, here are a few short gif videos. Total time to engrave was about 4 minutes 45 seconds. To use a diamond drag bit you don't turn on the motor.

I have been thinking of getting one of those drag bits. Do you mind saying where you got yours and at what cost?

Here is an example of something fun I could have engraved on my gun.

The VCarve software can convert bit map images to the vector image that is required for the CNC machine.

Engraved on a soup can lid, I reduced it to about 3/4" tall.
