Default I need a 5" L frame, help me decide.

I have:

Model 27-2 with a 6" barrel
Model 19-5 with a 4" barrel
Model 60-15 with a 3" barrel

Which means I need an L frame with a 5" barrel.
Ok, need is a strong word, but you get where I am going.

My choices would be:

686 plus Pro series
686 3 5 7 series
686 plus performance center

The Pro Series "bridges the gap between performance center and regular production" whatever that means???

I have never had a performance center gun, are they worth the extra money?

And then the 3 5 7 series seems to be regular production with odd barrel lengths.

Uses for this gun would be safe queen/range gun, probably never carried

I don't want to buy used. New production is perfectly fine with me.

What do you guys think?

Mountain gun is 4" tapered barrel.

They made a run of 686+ with 5" half lug barrel as a stocking dealer special.
Don't remember number but they had IL. Neat guns!

The 3 5 7 series is pretty cool looking with the unfluted cylinder. The custom grips suck but easily replaced.
It's also the plus, 7 round wheel.
You can't go wrong with any of them.

That's the pro series. The SSR is a different gun. Your link says SSR- but when it sends you to the website, it shows the pro series model. 5" 7 shot. The SSR is a 4" 6 shooter.

I would say go with the 686 3 5 7 series. I almost bought one of them instead of my 66-1. Ended up with the 66 because it ended up being cheaper. I prefer the 7in barrel on them but the 5in really looks the best.

For the use you state, this new S&W offering is a great setup for your range, with target grips and a bright Patridge sight. Supposedly the barrels are better designs for the range, but I'm not good enough to notice.

My Performance Center 686 has a much smoother action than my non-PC 686's.

IMHO, the thin wood grips on the 3-5-7 are awful, and require replacement ASAP.

I got this version of the 686+ PRO Performance Center(R) Pro Series(R) Model 686 Plus | Smith & Wesson If you're looking for a range gun I'd say it's a pretty good choice. Honestly though if I had it to do over again I'd opt for either the 3" or 2.5" 686+ versions. Not that there's anything wrong with the 5" but for a woods gun I'd have been better off with the shorter barrel. I added a pic showing the pistol with a different set of grips.

Buy a PC revolver if it has the features/looks you want. Being a PC doesn't guarantee anything. I have several & I've gotten nice ones & ones with the same defects/flaws found in standard production models.

For years they were a TALO exclusive & then S&W and TALO parted ways, now they're standard production. I prefer the traditional full-lug look to the slab-side look (I have both.).

My 686 TALO shoots as good or better than my 627PC.

I like 5" barrels too...

We are all different, but I really like my 686-6, Pro Series (5"). Saw it at a gun show and had to have it. Not my normal style! Looked at it on Saturday, (bought a 66-2, 2.5") and came back Sunday, and it was still there. Made a trade. Got rid of a poly bottom feeder. It has a really good action. Bob

If you want something a little rare, try to find a 686-3 National Match. Those guns were a 1989 special run for Bill Davis, a custom revolver specialist, with non-fluted cylinders, five-inch barrels and a Patridge front sight. They only made 500 of them and the actions were supposedly tuned by Smith & Wesson. They can be a little pricey if you can find one - I paid $1,400 for mine a few years ago.

Product code for this gun is 104254. Mine is an overrun of this product code with no National Match on side.

I'd go with the 3-5-7 personally. Pro series guns have some visual differences but they usually have had nothing done to the internals like a real PC model.
