This is our "Bump in the night" 1911... The wife shoots it well and its her favorite handgun of ours. I like the option of the light... and being able to take it off with a coin if I wish to CCW it. She's very reliable and accurate... even with Wolf "WPA" steel cased ammo surprisingly. It loves Federal HST's and Blazer Aluminum ammo the most though.

Just beautiful. Yes, ALL of those qualify IMO! Damn those are sweet! Looks like you like to shoot them too like me and you have dedicated holsters for each one. Thanks for sharing those!

Yes on the 38 Super. More than 25 years ago a buddy fire chief & I were both shooting Gold Cups 70s & he got the idea we should get a couple of no frills 1911s & build Supers. We we did & my memory is not what it used to be however we used fixed sights, used Clark barrels & honed the sears & hammers, I think we used Blue Dot powder & hornaday 53 gr. 355 jacketed rounds (hand loaded) This was before they started using heavy Super rounds. What we had were the Top Fuel Dragsters speed wise of out local 20 point indoor range. Flamethrowers & ear piercing crackle rounds. Everybody always stopped & watched when we were touching them off & laughs were common even bringing tears. Accuracy was so so but at 15 yards a 4" pattern was about the rule. I kept mine for a decade before swapping it for my 81 25-2 45 ACP pre logo Effector (no marking) box just says Special Model. That one stays with me pretty much forever.

It is not too late. "Combat" will not become overused like "tactical" because the latter is a euphemism for the former and far more politically correct. Seriously. When you say "combat" today you're headed for a fight. When you say "tactical" you are in the netherworld of hi-tech sunglasses, rip-stop BDU-type clothing, Kydex smart phone covers, electronic sights, and camouflage clothing that you can wear to dinner.

All sorts of fine folks want to be equipped with tactical gear. A whole lot less want to be equipped for combat.

So, that amusement aside, my definition of a "combat magnum" begins with the implication that I am discussing revolvers. While I guess there must be some pistols out there in so-called "magnum" pistol calibers that someone literally calls a "magnum" the term is quite closely associated with revolvers, not Bren Tens and their progeny. So my reaction to "combat magnum" is a wheelgun.

In the past I would have just said a "Model 19" and let it go at that. However, as much as I love my Model 19s, I think I would choose an L-frame to take into a combat situation, preferably a 3" or 4" M686+. Same amount of rounds as 1911 so that covers the round count and so easy to use, easy to carry in a belt holster, etc. Good balance, accurate, etc.

I don't use them for EDC because they're too large and heavy but if I was headed to a fight and was bringing a sidearm that's the combat magnum I would choose.

I'm going to say that my definition of a combat magnum is a pinned and recessed 2.5 inch 66 or 19. A prelock 686 sporting a 2.5 inch barrel and combat grips would be also be in the top 3. Here's a quick family photo of my favorites

Default Best Combat Magnum

The best combat magnum, IMHO, is the model 65, 357 magnum, 3" or 4" bull barrel, stainless steel, K frame, non adjustable sights, with a bobbed hammer.....just saying. Of course the model 13 is right up there with it.

I am lucky as I saved for quite a while to buy my dream gun which is a S&W 357 Model627-5" barrel. I love shooting this gun with 38 special ammo in it. This I can do with one hand as its so comfortable to fire. If I had to carry that would be my carry gun as I have placed wood grips on it. Its deadly accurate and very quick to place consecutive shots at 25 yards. The 357 ammo from Blazer was burning the right side of my face but it was manageable to get by with if I had to in a pinch.

8 shots of 357 MAGNUM, a serious manstopper is another option I'd seriously consider grabbing from the safe if I needed a major sidearm for backup. My 627-5 VComp is without pier in it's ablilty to do the job accurately and reliably.

Hi Guys, Does anyone know what model the 2nd photo down in Cocked & Locked's post above ? It appears to be a 4" K Frame Round Butt in either AS I'd Nickel. I'm curious as that particular configuration is quite uncommon. THANKS

Best, dpast32

The .460 certainly has it's place in the deep woods and for hunting. The last one I borrowed/shot from a friend for a weekend... It kinda grew on me despite being total unconcealable even on my big ***. I'm not very recoil sensitive compared to most... but the .460 is hard on my wrists with their nuclear loads. I did like it quite a bit when shooting .454 Casulls out of her. The weight really made the Casull's rather comfortable to shoot!

Mine carries so well that I'm carrying it 80% of the time now. Did that holster come with your Lew Horton? I think mine came with one too but the original owner didn't include it with the GB sale. No biggie as I have a DeSantis OWB holster that is pretty worn/broken in now and is super comfortably and has a positive thumb break/snap for retainment when fishing/hiking, etc. But I do wish the original owner would have included it with the sale package...

Hahaha! You do realize the pistol on the top IS a 97B, right???

The 2075 while being pretty great, just doesn't do it for me. I am adding a 75B-SA and a Rami for the wife in the near future though!

The above three are some of my favorite revolvers. It's hard to beat a short N-Frame 357 for shootability and those 8-shot 627 shorties are something way cool!

...for my S&W defined "Combat Magnums", I would go with these two as a couple of my favorite 6-shot shooters:

A 2.5" 19-3 that has been ported and has a Nelson Ford action job:

... and a 3" 66-2 with a gold bead patridge front sight and a Nelson Ford action job:

Original choice:

Well saidn Yoda! Nice revolvers for sure and I agree with your rational! Thanks to the 98% of the members/posters of this thread; you've made it great with the pics, history, ideas, knowledge on the subject etc...

To the 2% that are pi$$y over a term that I clearly represented as "an opinion" of what the idea of a particular set-up/revolver is... you really need to get out of the basement and go get laid. I'll make solid effort to roll into your thread(s) in the future and pi$$ into them as well.

Default My interpretation with qualifiers...

I figure as with; "Muscle Car", "Truck Gun", "Guard Dog" and the like, mileage varies.

Noting that this is MY interpretation with an example, though it has a couple of iffy features by my own standards.

First the "Combat":
>Little if any accommodation to weight. Comes down to it, heft at distance or NOT should be an asset in a "Combat Magnum".
>Enough barrel to be accurate to 50 yards but short enough to be "handy" and very carryable.
>Good sights, preferably adjustable to a best-load but not too "snaggy".
>Stainless finish because; stainless! I don't want to worry about it though others will balk at the shine - which I get too.
>Goodly grips with more concern about grip than conceal ability.
>Got to have a hammer spur in case of a single action preference.
6 or more shots because, well... heft as stated above.
>S&W or similarly styled cylinder catch with anode towards Dan Wesson as well. I simply can't wrap my head or hands around a Colt's style catch for a "combat" gun regardless the century of success it has maintained.

Then, "Magnum"
.357 or .32 H&R for sure.
Less enthusiastic about .41 and FOR ME.... .44 is simply too, damn, much.

One of my better examples acknowledging that sights and grip are not my favorite alternatives but my wife digs the "V" rear, bright front and the laser grip.

Have to agree. If nothing else, right up near the top of the list...

Funny thing.
While ruminating over this as my 66 sits on the desk. I got to thinking about reading a long time ago that the Model 19 was supposedly the earliest pistol with the moniker: "Combat Magnum" which got me to looking at my very tight yet oh-so-carried Model 19.
That in turn got me to wondering what S&W currently sells closest to the Model 19 and what do I find? A fella can STILL buy a new 19 from S&W!
But more to the point, several models over from the brand-spankin' new 19 is a model officially named the "Combat Magnum" by S&W themselves and there sits.... my Model 66!
