Default Why get a revolver instead of a pistol?

I know very little about revolvers, though I have fired them before. Actually, I don’t know much about guns, but I’ve had an M&P 9 compact that I loved and felt very comfortable with. It was easy to shoot, easy to clean, and 9mm ammo wasn’t that expensive. I had to sell it, unfortunately. Now I need to get a new handgun. I don’t want to rule out something like a 642, unless it’s more expensive than a new 9c. I know I won’t go shoot a revolver for fun, like I did with the 9. How easy are revolvers to clean and to troubleshoot? I know there are strong opinions on both sides of the handgun aisle, but tell me what’s good (or better) about a revolver.
The gun will occasionally be carried, and I’m getting it for self-defense while hiking, in the car, and at home. I just want to get the job done, should the need arise.
Thank you in advance for positive feedback.

Then stick with the plastic fantastic. I started with revolvers, and all the decorations on the "I love me wall" were won with revolvers.
But there is more to learn and more to do with revolvers than with M&Ps. I shoot an M&P Pro 9 5" in matches, but I can shoot the same numerical scores with a Model 66, which is more likely to put me in the wood. A friend outshoots me in SSP, so he decided to try me with revolvers, and found out it is harder than it looks. First of all, if you can't speed reload, you can't win with revolvers.

For carrying and self-defense, I like revolvers because of the added safety benefit of a long, hard double action trigger pull. Many people like striker fired guns, but to me, the trigger is just too light, and accidents do happen.

Plus, a revolver has soul

Revolvers can sit for decades and lose little to no reliability.

There is no complicated failure to fire drill. Just pull the trigger again.

You never have to wonder if the magazine is seated, the safety is on or off, or the slide is slightly out of battery. If the revolver is in good working order and the cylinder is locked into place it will fire.

Revolvers teach good trigger control in double action, and the only thing that can match a smooth & crisp single action pull in the auto world is a 1911 or perhaps a CZ (in single action).

You can load very light or very heavy without modifying the gun. Point of impact might change but it will work.

Your options are limited in the auto world when you want/need more than 500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy.

If you're into such things, you can have stupidly small, light guns that fire magnums e.g. the S&W 360PD in .357 Magnum which is less than 12oz empty. There is no auto equivalent, 9mm +P+ out of a micro is close but is rarely reliable or safe.

A revolver does have soul! I agree. Further, due to their long trigger pull they are inherently safer than today's tricky trigger automatics. I have both but routinely carry revolvers although I am still a fan of 3rd Gen S&Ws pistols. Metal. Not plastic. Double action triggers. Etc.

But, to get specific:

Quote:
Actually, I don’t know much about guns,
That's quite curable with a little time and effort. At some point in time none of us knew much about guns.

Quote:
It was easy to shoot,
Revolvers are easy to shoot.

Quote:

Revolvers are easier to clean.

,
Quote:
and 9mm ammo wasn’t that expensive
.

I reckon that .38 Special cannot be all that much more expensive and maybe even less if you're just shooting range ammo. Save the expensive, defensive ammunition for carrying, although you should shoot it some to get to know it well.

Quote:
I don’t want to rule out something like a 642, unless it’s more expensive than a new 9c.
Prices are unknown to me. A 642 makes a great pocket carry gun.

Quote:
I know I won’t go shoot a revolver for fun, like I did with the 9.
Why? They are equally as fun! Except for the fact that lightweight revolvers like the 642 are definitely less fun. But an all steel gun in a J frame size is a hoot to shoot!

Quote:
How easy are revolvers to clean and to troubleshoot?
Super easy to clean. You don't take them apart! Troubleshooting is something you do when you have trouble. Mostly, you won't ever have any trouble. They work all the time. Okay, anything can break but, as a practical matter, wheel guns rarely break if you treat them right.

Quote:
I know there are strong opinions on both sides of the handgun aisle, but tell me what’s good (or better) about a revolver.
It's all perception, really. What are the uses it is put to, how will it be carried, etc. If you can work a pistol's slide easily then the pistol and the revolver are not difficult gadgets to operate. If you can't work the slide then the simplicity of a revolver takes over. Some of us don't have incredibly strong opinions against one or the other; it's just personal preferences. I prefer revolvers. I own plenty of pistols and I shoot them and carry them but I shoot the revolvers and carry the revolvers more often. It's not a contest.

Quote:
The gun will occasionally be carried, and I’m getting it for self-defense while hiking, in the car, and at home.
Let's get back to your basic comment. You don't know much about guns. So, if you're familiar with a small auto pistol then maybe you should stick to what you do know about until such time as you familiarize yourself with new things.

Both pistols and revolvers are useful for carry/self defense, wherever, etc. Can you confidently use your gun? Will you use it if you need it? If you can and you will then you're most of the way there. Carrying the gun means hiking and in town. What are you going to confront in either place? Can you use your gun successfully in either place if needed? That's your key.

In the car you ought to be carrying it, not searching for it in your console or glove box. But that works if necessary.

At home it needs to be ready for use - no little kids around!!! Both pistols and revolvers are good here, too. My choice is a revolver. Before my house fire I kept a loaded revolver in every room of the house. In the new house I will do that again. When I need a gun at zero dark thirty I need a gun I don't need to think about - revolvers are so simple to operate they make excellent I-just-awoke-and-need-a-gun self defense tools.

That gets the job done.

From what you describe I believe a small revolver would suit your needs. They can be ignored for long periods of time then pulled and used w/o any problems. I had to use my issued revolver three times in 30 years, during the period when we all carried revolvers, and I’m still around to enjoy my retirement and I still carry a J frame.

Beats me.

Go to a rental range, try both, & see what you like.

I’m just a dyed-in-the-wool revolver guy. I’ve been playing with a Glock 22 and 3913 lately. I sorta see the attraction of the latter. Also a CZ-75C I tried at a rental range. The Glock, not so much.

I carry a K-frame .38 everywhere I go. It’s just what I know best.

Here’s one tip:

Revolver or auto, with the right holster and clothing selection, there is no reason to settle for a small-frame gun. Your ability to hit goes up considerably with larger-frame guns & longer barrels. IDK much about M&Ps (I have shot one), but it doesn’t look as though a compact or even full size would be much harder to conceal than a Shield, or that much extra weight in the right holster. I absolutely prefer a K-frame to J, and can carry comfortably all day in 100-degree heat (I live in Texas.)

On second thought, that’s no discomfort from carrying my revolver, plenty from the heat.

The OP may end up liking both, or preferring one over the other. The recommendation to try both at a rental range is a very good idea.

Having said that, you can hardly go wrong with a "compact" (not small) or full size pistol, like the various versions of the M&P-9. And 9mm is a good caliber to start out with. You can branch out later.

If you decide to go with a revolver, a mid-sized revolver (something like a S&W K Frame) is a good thing to start with (not a 642). The 642 is a pocket revolver, and very good for what it is -- but not a fun gun to shoot at the range, and smaller than it needs to be for home defense.

Anyway, give a few guns a try at the range, and if you get one type or the other, there is no reason you can't branch out later. I'd bet most folks on this revolver forum also have pistols!

spirit4earth, I shoot and collect S&W revolvers. They are built like the finest mechanical watch. They are reliable, dependable, safe, easy to operate, and accurate. A S&W in deep black mirror blue with fine wood grips, like my large framed Model 25-5, is a joy to the eye. My Model 19-3 "Combat Magnum" is the handgun I shoot better than any handgun I've ever shot. If I'm hiking about and want to be well armed for any type of critter I might encounter, I carry a fine stainless Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in 45 Colt. If I were to concealed carry an utterly dependable revolver, it would be my little Model 36 "Chief's Special."

My everyday, concealed carry handgun, that I depend upon to protect my life and the life or my loved ones, is an ugly, works every time, life depending confidence, kick about, S&W Shield in 9mm.

S&W Model 25-5 that I nicknamed "Black Beauty" in 45 Colt (pleasing to look at, powerful, and deadly accurate).

S&W Model 19-3 "Combat Magnum" in 357 Magnum (I shoot it better than any other handgun).

S&W Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in 45 Colt.

S&W Model 36 "Chief's Special" in 38 Special

S&W M&P Shield in 9mm (my every day CCW).

Thanks for your consideration.

God bless,
Birdgun

Thank you ALL for your input. It’s so helpful. Financially, I’d have to go with a J frame—-from what I can see, the K’s are too expensive. I think it will come down to a FS M&P 9 2.0, or a J frame with an enclosed hammer.
The next step is to see what’s at my two local shops, and go from there.

Stick with what you know and have liked.

Then down the road, when you acquire knowledge,
good taste and sophistication, get a K-frame
or L-frame revolver or a Ruger GP-100 or a
Ruger Blackhawk.

Or switch your question to the auto sections.
And never look forward.

Revolvers do not jam and autos by and large are jamomatics in comparison. They also allow for more accurate fire due to the lower capacity. Users with autos tend to "pray and spray" while revolver shooters are more accurate since they know they have less rounds. Also rounds like the .500 S&W trump any auto pistol load for pure stopping power.

Then , like with a .357. You can load up some wimpy .38's and plink away having fun all day, then drop in some.357's and go kill some hogs, got some rats or snakes, they got some shot shells you can shoot out of the same gun.
Not ever going to find a semi auto that versatile.

Did we really need yet another Revolver vs Semiautomatic Pistol thread so soon?

Seriously, there are already a couple active ones on other subforums, not to mention countless others posted all across the internet.

Could we at least have another Bear Defense or [insert cartridge here] vs [insert marginally more powerful cartridge here] thread for a bit of variety among the redundant threads?

At any rate, I'll answer this thread the same way I always do... Carry the firearm that YOU are most proficient with and feel the most confident with, nothing less will satisfy YOU, and there's no point driving yourself crazy trying to find the illusive, optimal one-size-fits-all platform for self-defense. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You will never forget that "CLICK SNICK CLICK" sound of your first double action.
Then accuracy wise, you can always drop the hammer in single action for ultimate accuracy.
And just the art of the revolver itself.
do you like rubber timex watches or rolexes?
Simple and elegant masterpieces

Get a steel revolver for your purposes, probably a model 66 or 686 with a 3" or longer barrel as a good first gun for both hiking and range sessions. 38spl is fairly cheap to shoot. I would recommend NOT getting a 442/642 as a first revolver, they are highly modified revolvers IMHO, designed more for carry than range use and precision work.
Most dislike the accuracy and recoil as first timers.
You will Dry fire it often at zombies on the screen.

Agreed. The revolver is truly "an elegant weapon for a more civilized age." As such, they require a lot more investment from their owners than do the polymer wonders. More time, money, modifications, handload tweaking, study and so on. Dedication might be a more appropriate word. It is JMHO, I repeat JMHO...but revolvers aren't something a newbie can just pick up right out of the box and begin blasting away with like the semis.

I see it the complete opposite. Airweight J-frames are pretty cheap, nearly everyone can figure out how to operate one, no extra magazines to buy, low maintenance and they work. My elderly mother got her ccw and the instructor kept pushing her to get a Glock 26 despite never being to rack it and struggling to remember the steps to load and unload it, not to mention the high probability of malfunctions. She's safe and competent with her S&W 442.

Reread the OP's post and then reread my post, as you clearly have missed the point of both. Your own mother's experience has nothing to do with the topic. The OP admits to not having an extensive knowledge of guns in general, and revolvers in specific. That's OK, there is nothing wrong with that. My point is that you kind of have to fall into it...usually by shooting a friend or family members revolver . One cannot just wake up one morning and declare "I shall become a revolver devotee." Having experience by starting out my shooting career with pistols and then later on getting into revolvers (exclusively), I cannot honestly tell the OP that he/she is on the right path. The OP IIRC only owns one handgun and is going to carry this as a SD weapon. The OP has already indicated a familiarity and appreciation for semi-auto pistols...and a lack of knowledge of revolvers. Well...a couple old sayings apply here. First - if it ain't broke, don't fix it." And second - "If you have to ask, then it's probably not for you."

I think it is personal preference, kinda like Glock vs 1911, etc. Revolvers feel different, as the weight is more forward, are inherently more accurate (although I have a 10mm RIA 1911 that can compete with my S&W TRR8, who'd guess that?!). And of course as others noted they behave differently. Google your question and you'll get pages of responses and thoughts.

As for my thoughts? I love my revolvers. Especially my TRR8, 8 shot, moon clips-im almost as fast as a mag change with practice, under tail for IR light when night hunting and light for home defense, red dot, etc.

If you want a do it all gun? Cant beat a nice 357. You can cut your teeth on reloading from light 38 spl to big 357 mag, even cat sneeze loads for I your garage.... itll always "cycle". 357 is Great self defense, great hunting gun, accurate, low maintanence, easy to use, always goes banger even if neglected, etc. Autos, to me, are more pigeon holed in their function. Quick example, cant hunt with 9mm, but good defense. Can hunt with 10mm, but overkill on self defense. So if you want a gun that YOU can grow into, revolver all the way. Cause you can always make the gun do what YOU want it to do without it bitching about Steve pipes, not cycling, not feeding rounds, etc.

And trust me, you'll take it to the range, I'm currently working up to 100 yr shooting now, got 50 yds almost satisfactory. Most autos wont do that, and yes, this is with my 357. You wont get bored at all. And hey, if you only pull it out once a year, your still GTG.

Just my thoughts.

I'm more likely to shoot revolvers for fun. There's no chasing or catching brass. No getting hot brass on your forehead, in your ear or down your shirt. No fail to feed. No stove pipes. No fail to eject. No magazines to remember or to load.

With a revolver there's no remembering to insert the magazine, there's always one in the chamber and the safety is never on.

If you can't get your mission accomplished with 5 or 6 rounds afforded in a revolver you're likely screwed anyway.

That being said .... about 10% of my "carry time" is with a LC9s Pro but I still feel more confident with my Model 60 or LCR.

Whatever YOU decide is what's important. Me? I'm a cranky old revolver guy.

Good luck with your chase!

If you enjoy the mental/physical activity of shooting, if the satisfaction of caressing a machine into doing exactly what you want excites you, get a revolver.

If you think of a gun as just a tool, if you want cheaper ammo, get an M&P 2.0 compact.

Unless you find bulk .38 Special on sale, .38 will always be more expensive than 9mm (barring another ammo drought). Most stores sell at least 100-200 round boxes of 9mm. .38 is harder to find in boxes over 50 rounds.

Three good reasons to get a S&W revolver. Model 15-3 (1974), Model 10-7 (1977), Model 64 (no dash) (1976). Have carried the Model 64 concealed since 1976 when I bought it new as an off duty revolver when I became a LEO. With a good pancake holster a 2" K Frame is as good as it gets.

I do have pistols including a Shield 9mm that I carry. However if given the choice of only one to carry it would be the Model 64.

By the way - you don't have to field strip a revolver to clean it!

Go with what you are comfortable with.

If you are comfortable w a semi and it meets your needs buy one. If you prefer a revolver buy that. For folks who really aren't into guns I suggest revolvers because the make it work safely is easier. I see the progression of small to midsize revolver then a full size auto then a compact auto because full size autos are less comfortable to carry then either a died in the wool 1911 accept no substitutes junkie or back to revolvers especially if you like big bullets at moderate to high velocities. Then when you get older and your hands don't like recoil so much anymore you start loving either a good 22 target pistol or revolver or a 38 Special target revolver.

The next step is to see what’s at my two local shops, and go from there.
Unless you get a sweet deal locally, I can highly recommend the 442PCs being sold on Gunbroker right now. One vendor has them for $329.

Default One thing nobody has mentioned...but..

but it might be moot based on your local laws.

Transportation!

Here in the people's republic of Kalifornia... CCW is a challenge to get in many areas and when transporting your gun from place A, to B, you need to separate the ammo from the gun.

Rack that round again when you get somewhere, strip again before you leave and get back in the car, rack another round whey you get back home, or the next destination. Because of the concern of ...ah whats it called?....just forgot the name...case shrinkage?....somebody check me.

Anyway, with a revolver it is so easy to load, and unload the gun and still use the same ammo each time.

Again, depends on your local laws about transporting arms.

The advantage to a 642 is that it is one of the best guns for pocket carry. If you don't foresee having to pocket carry then you are probably better off sticking with the M&P9C.

Full size revolvers are lots of fun at the range. Airweight J-frames, not so much.

Under duress in an unexpected attack (I know, I know, situational awareness, but manure occurs) a less than optimum firing grip on an autoloader can convert it to a one-shooter at the worst possible time. If you can squeeze a revolver trigger through its arc it will speak its lines.

A revolver won't go out of battery if push really comes to thug and you are forced to ram the muzzle into an assailant.

I can no longer rack a slide, but when I could I might have considered an automatic as a head-of-the-bed house gun. But I still would have carried a revolver.

[QUOTE=I know I won’t go shoot a revolver for fun, like I did with the 9.[/QUOTE]

If you're going to carry your revolver. You need regular range days to stay sharp with you carry weapon. If you're not going to shoot it for fun, then you might want to stick with the 9mm.

The older I get, the more I migrate back to shooting revolvers, not sure why, I just like the feel of them and enjoy loading them much more than the semi's.

And today's my birthday folks, so don't argue, cut me some slack...

General rule around here......... get both!

For urban suburban concealed carry I tend to carry a "smaller" compact auto..... like a S&W 3913 or 6906 both have served me well since the early 90s.

At the cabin or out in Penn's Woods I tend to carry a .357..... generally a 3" 66 or 60-10.

All that said .................

IMO the most versatile utility/duty/ general purpose revolver is a 4" 686.....
.38 wadcutters , and shot shells to full bore .357 stainless for ease of care...... K-frame grip and trigger reach;N-frame strength. Can be carried concealed if needed.

Someone made a good point a while back................. a golfer doesn't golf with just one club...... there is no one handgun that will be "the best" for everything either.

I love revolvers and for most of my six decades revolvers were cheaper to buy, cheaper to shoot and more reliable. This has changed. I taught pistol and coached a teenage steel team. We used S&W M&P's (full size) but several instructors owned M&P compacts. We put literally tens of thousands of rounds of 9mm down range every year with almost zero malfunctions, some years with absolutely zero malfunctions. A few kids had personally owned Glocks or Springfield Armory guns. Same story. This was true for huge boys with strong hands and arms and also true for tiny girls who probably weighed 90 pounds. Racking the slide was difficult for the weaker kids but they could be taught proper mechanics and do it safely. Slide racking might become an issue for the elderly, I have no experience there (though I am getting close myself).

22's are a different story, but modern 9mm semi autos are very reliable and have become cheaper than revolvers.

I still love revolvers. I have no wish to die, but we all die someday. I hope I'm found dead in the woods with a revolver on my belt. (Dead of a heart attack, I don't want to get eaten and then have people say, "He should have been carrying a bigger gun!")

You bring up a good point, however I actually favor the auto in some instances under such circumstances. I travel a great deal and will usually take along a Glock 26 in addition to my snub. In situations where I have to unload my weapons, I would likely opt for grabbing the Glock if it needed to be reloaded in a hurry.

I would agree. I prefer a snub revolver for carry, but a higher capacity auto definitely has a role in home defense for me as well as a hotel room gun, and as I mentioned above, if needing to keep unloaded.

Any home defense situation where it would likely play out at contact distances(checking out a noise that's likely nothing, but could be an intruder hiding, answering the door, stepping outside to get the mail, take out the trash etc.) I'll still stick with the snub. And if I could only pick one for budget or other reasons, or was an individual who will just put it in a drawer and leave it there for months or years just in case, I would definitely go with a revolver.

In my world, the only role for a semi-auto is as "backup" to my wheelguns. As much as I love revolvers, and find they are adequate for 95% of my needs, I'd like to keep a high-capacity mag fed gun in case Rodney King style riots break out in my neighborhood. This is not totally out of the realm of possibility...they have happened here in Cincinnati on more than one occasion.

The main reason for me..... So I don't have to chase fired brass all over the range , stooping over and picking up every one has just gotten to be a pain...literally. The revolver puts them back into my hand !
I reload and loath not getting all my empties back.

Well I have plenty of both. I also consider myself a first class curmudgeon so my normal every day carry weapon has to be a revolver just to stay in character!

FWIW I also feel that the revolver just has more soul than a auto gun!

Because revolvers are more fun to use. Of course that is completely subjective. If you disagree, then simply purchase auto-loaders.

I may have said it already but I cant find it. Revolvers are more versatile. They can be used for utility and for self defense. Snakeshot to hardcast, everything in between. Also the design of the hollowpoints is not limited like it is in an auto.

You have a 500sw.
The only feasible backup would be a 460 or 44
